The Trailer For Fright Night Makes Me Want To Kill My Neighbors... In A Good Way

Well, raise my rent. I did not see that coming.

So here’s the trailer for the remake of Fright Night, which is one of those campy horror classics of my youth that I watched endlessly, and that hasn’t aged too terribly. It’s not a fantastic movie, but it’s an enjoyable one — the kind of movie that you roll your eyes when you hear about the remake, but you don’t exactly grab your pitchforks and torches.

So the details started to trickle in — Craig Gillespie (Lars And The Real Girl) would direct. It would feature an surprisingly solid cast — Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots (Poots!), Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and David Tennant. And,,,

Oh, just watch the trailer:

So am I a drunken asshole, or does that actually look kind of… cool? I like the vibe, it’s capturing the Rear Window meets Dracula thing pretty nicely. Farrell isn’t overplaying the part, and it’s not nearly as cheesy as you would’ve thought. Then again, there’s no sign of Tennant, who I’m guessing will fill up the cheese quotient (the same should be said of Mintz-Plasse, if he turns into Evil Ed as his character did in the original). But damn me, it actually looks like it could be pretty fun.

Looks good. I loved the original movie. I watched it again a few months ago and, you're right, it does hold up pretty well.

Well you're definitely a drunken asshole but yeah that does look ok. Farrel is much better as a villain IMO.

Posted by: logan at May 16, 2011 11:10 AM

One of my stays just popped open of its own accord. I swear it sighed, "Farrell".

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at May 16, 2011 11:11 AM

I'm in! And look, no sparkly vampires!

Posted by: BalladofMaxwellDemon at May 16, 2011 11:12 AM

It took me a long time to figure out why I recognized the kid killing the wampires.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse is the anti Angela Lansbury. Poor kid will be stuck playing high schoolers his entire career.

I rewatched this last year and yeah I enjoyed it. The Monster Squad does not hold up well.

Love, own, and play-reply the first one. It holds a permanent place in my heart.

But oh! Chris Sarandon has some competition in the delicious vampire category. Oh, how I wallow in this embarrassment of riches!

Posted by: klingonfree at May 16, 2011 11:45 AM

Oh, goodness. Farrell. Yuuup.

Posted by: Anna von Beav at May 16, 2011 11:45 AM

Oh, me. Oh, my. Yes. Yes, indeed. Love the original but this looks like greatness.

I don't know if Colin Farrell switched agents or just decided to live up to all his awesome potential, but I am loving his choices lately.

just watched 'sex, birth, death' the other night, so i kept waiting for good old charlie to carve up a prostitute a la nathan harris/criminal minds. that memory ups the creep factor on this a notch or two.

Google "How to pick a lock."

Instant lock-picking skills.

This movie takes place in the Matrix.

Huh, I am surprised this looks so good! I just wish they would keep the 80's cornball music though..what a soundtrack! Chris Sarandon was yummy in that - hope Alexander can fill those shoes.

Posted by: jp at May 16, 2011 12:33 PM

Oh, Tennant what are you DOING, man? There is absolutely no justification for this thing, NONE.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at May 16, 2011 12:36 PM

I watched the original a lot as a kid. Loved it. I was pissed when I heard about this. I have to admit though, this looks good. Which doesn't fare well for any actual original movies in the future. A successful 80's reboot is only going to cause more. So people should not go see this. Let me know who's going to volunteer to boycott this because I have to see it...for research. Or something.

Oh, and no way is Plasse going to be able to outdo Evil Eddy's performance.

Stays popped open?!! Why I'll have that tailor horse whipped!

Posted by: logan at May 16, 2011 12:54 PM

what about the Roddy McDowall role? did they just do away with that whole plot line?

Posted by: kristin at May 16, 2011 1:08 PM

It is sad to say, but in this day and age of the ubiquitous and unncessarily censorious infringement of radical groups on so many aspects of our daily lives, the ban on whaling has had a most deleterious effect on the corsetry industry. I shall recline and repine, but all the while give thanks for the collapsible bustle which allows me to do so in relative comfort and for the modesty afforded by the breadth of my pagoda sleeves as they fall over the breach in my lady garments.

Never fear, I'm here, and I can spot a Tennant from a mile away blindfolded. There was one frame. Shot from below with Evil Ed hanging above him from the ceiling. Never ever thought McLovin would share screen space with the Doctor, but the world's a crazy place, man.

May I say that any whale that gives his life to become part of your undergarments did not die in vain but found heaven on earth?

Posted by: logan at May 16, 2011 1:19 PM

You may.

What was the word you used, Mrs. J?

quasi-vaguely -pseudo-demi-stalkeresque?

Posted by: Socrates_Johnson at May 16, 2011 1:50 PM

I was hoping to hyphenate would catch on, not the concept.

If I have over-stepped the bounds of propriety Madam I beg your forgiveness. I force my attentions on no one.

Just make sure you keep the Ghiradelli in the fridge, so to speak.

Or buy from La Maison du Chocolat, see God, and have no leftovers you need to store.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at May 16, 2011 2:55 PM

So am I a drunken asshole, or does that actually look kind of… cool?

Can't it be both?

Posted by: TWoPFan at May 16, 2011 3:53 PM

Farrell still does not have the cool calmness Sarandon had though. Hope this lives up to expectations. Shame they got rid of Fiedel great soundtrack.

Posted by: maxtech at May 16, 2011 4:01 PM

I love the original one. Except for the girlfriend he wanted so badly. Could never see her as appealing and then they put her in Married With Children.
I do wonder if there will be a great vampire hunter role.

Posted by: daria at May 16, 2011 4:08 PM

I was so pissed when I first heard they were remaking this movie and now I'm more pissed! First of all besides that the vampire is his neighbor it looks like the rest has nothing to do with the original story! If you're going to remake a movie what's the fucking use if you are not going to follow the original movie you are remaking? The worst is that if I would of seen that same trailer and this movie would not have been called Fright Night and would not have been it's remake I would of wanted to see it! Fucking bastards!

Posted by: Nancy at May 16, 2011 5:32 PM

is it just me or does this look like Disturbia with a vamp?

Posted by: haplo at May 17, 2011 12:08 AM

Colin Ferrel does as a fair impression of Henry Rollins. Hollywood needs another riot. A few more idle rich cock-suckers need to watch their mansions go up in flames.

Posted by: Mr. Stitch at May 18, 2011 9:33 PM

you have to be Drunk or brain dead to even THINK by looking at this crappy preview that it would be any good. The actors from the original solidified the personas of the characters. THere is NO WAY IN Hades that Colin Farrel as the vampire in anyway looks cool, the soundtrack from the original was WAY Sexier. The setting in the remake is a suburb in Beverly hills?!! like the mansion with white walls is SOO creepy. Hollywood has just butchered another classic, and it's soo sad because people will go pay money to see a pitiful excuse for a movie that's why hollywood keeps doing it.
