Who Knew Falling In Love With The Dead Could Be So Charming?

I love it when this happens. I spend a few hours a day banging around the internet, looking for something interesting to write about. I basically look for either a) something that makes me lose my temper (happens often), or b) something that makes me smile (happens rarely). Today, we got a little bit of (b), in the trailer for The Strange Case of Angelica. It’s a great premise — a photographer is summoned to a family’s home to serve as the photographer for their dead daughter’s wake, only through the eyes of his lens, she appears to be alive. He begins seeing, and falling in love with her ghost — in his photographs and in his dreams.

It’s a pretty damn fine looking film. It’s directed by Manuel de Oliveira who is, I shit you not, 101 years old. I mean, damn.

Here’s the trailer:

This looks lovely. I remember thinking, when De Oliveira made that sweet film with Malkovich and Deneuve, in the 90s, 'holy crap, dude's OLD!' - and here he is, well over a decade later, still doing amazing stuff. How on earth does he get up in the morning?

So...it's a documentary?

This looks lovely, and I'm sad to say I've never heard of the man. What a remarkable guy! I like this softer side of you, TK. Bring us more of this!

Looks like a lot of time and care went into this, and when you're 101, you really step out on a limb when you take your sweet time with a project.*

OK, I'd kind of like to see how this ends.

*--True story: The local newspaper ran a feature Dec. 25 about a man who was all set to turn 100 years old on Christmas Day, about what a swell fellow he was and such, and of course he died late Christmas eve.

I watched it with the sound off, but it looks like the word "Angelica" is used in the film often.

Whatever, it's about time Jennifer Love Hewitt returned to the big screen.

He's also, well, fucking de Oliveira! His work is incredible. Thanks for promoting this.

I'll watch this if only to stroke my own ego.

I wonder if my dyslexic husband will be able to handle the speed of the subtitles, but with him or without, I'm going to find this movie! Looks beautiful.

101 years old, with 57 directorial credits and over half of those were in the last 20 years. Talk about leaving it till the last minute...

Thanks TK - this film looks great and I'd not heard of it until now.

Actually, he was born in late 1908, so he's 102 now!

It would be pretty funny if he only just received wide acclaim in America now.
