Jonah Hill's The Sitter Trailer: New Hollywood Myth: Profanity Magically Transforms Something Unfunny into Something Funny

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Trailers | Comments (43)

s-JONAH-HILL-large300.jpg

Below is the trailer for Jonah Hill’s The Sitter, which is basically Adventures with Babysitting minus Thor, plus lots of profanity and jiggly bits. The current trend in Hollywood, it seems, is to take an 80’s movie premise and simply add swear words and nudity. You can thank The Hangover for that. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

There’s really not much else to add here, except what the fuck happened to you, David Gordon Green? How did you go from directing brilliant indie flicks like All the Real Girls, Undertow and Snow Angels to becoming Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, and Jonah Hill’s directing bitch? After Your Highness, I have absolutely no faith in your abilities as a director anymore, and I don’t care how many women Jonah Hill goes down on in the trailer. Also, ew.

Do note, however, that preceding the trailer, skinny Jonah Hill provides an introduction. The guy lost a lot of weight; unfortunately, neither his teeth nor his eyeballs shrank proportionately. It’s jarring, not to mention the weird juxtaposition between Skinny Hill in the Intro and Fat Hill in the trailer.

Pajiba - I know you need to make money off of ads, but good god! There was the noisy pre-page ad, followed by a loud popover ad and then there's the top 1/8 of the page ad. all these I need to wait to load and then close before I can read anything. Are the side ads not enough? Can you at least work with advertisers to not have audio ads that auto-start?

Posted by: Katie at August 4, 2011 9:40 PM

Also the ad that pops up EVERY SINGLE TIME you click on a new story or go back to the main page. When you first get to the website, sure. Clicking on the first page, sure. EVERY G-D TIME? no.

Posted by: Ashley at August 4, 2011 9:56 PM

The noisy video pre-page ad that plays automatically is actually discouraging me from coming here. Seriously, Pajiba. I guarantee you that ad is not worth the money because it's certainly driving me away.

Posted by: Faye at August 4, 2011 10:07 PM

Does anybody absently leave their pointer in the top inch of the screen only to have the "roll-over 1-2-3 countdown ad" come down and then expand, because it happens to me all the time.

Oh, the movie, it looks dumb, so so dumb.

Posted by: Freller at August 4, 2011 10:22 PM

You see it's funny because they swear and the kids are right there and they're sassy and...oh forget it. Jonah Hill is just skeevy, fat OR skinny. And, what exactly is the cunnilingus joke? That he's desperate so he'll go down on a woman who does nothing for him? Because women will let just anyone lap at their ladyparts? I mean I know movie jonah looks like he could just demolish a buffet, but it's really not the same skill. Not that it matters, I'm sure this will make money. Oh, and the ads are fine. they're a nice filter for the crabby and annoying.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at August 4, 2011 10:32 PM

I don't see any ads anywhere. Not that I'm complaining...just...ya know...puttin' it out there.

Posted by: Candee at August 4, 2011 10:58 PM

Jonah Hill, my weight loss hero.

As for the ads, yes they are kinda annoying but as long as I can click them away cool. Just don't ever get the ones that don't let you close them until fucking 9 seconds pass, fuck those.

Posted by: junierizzle at August 4, 2011 11:20 PM

Adblock Plus, ya'll!

"Bad Santa"

"Bad Teacher"

"Bad Sitter"

*sigh*

That right there was fuckin' depressing. This has been one of the worst movie years I can remember.

Posted by: , at August 5, 2011 1:43 AM

That Hollywood myth isn't new.

Posted by: HaterJonny at August 5, 2011 1:46 AM

Maybe it's because I'm young and didn't see "Don't tell Mom," maybe it's because I have a Jonah Hill predisposition, and maybe it's because I'm FROM the "hangover" generation (I'm still only 24,) but I thought this sorta looked funny. Funnier than the "Changeup" trailers anyways. And I'm still gonna go see that. Ryan Reynolds 4 life.

That said I understand while all you 80s babies are all "this has been done, and much better back in the day," but you sound like the old man complaining about modern music when you do. Every movie idea has been done. With a few exceptions, most movies are going to be rehashes of things that you've seen already. But I hate it to break it to you, your parents were complaining about the same stuff when you were lining up for "Don't tell mom," or Queen.

Yeah I went there, get over it.

Posted by: aroorda at August 5, 2011 3:17 AM

Thanks Jonah, now you’ll turn out like every other fat guy that has lost a bunch of weight, mean and angry. You’ll begin by hating other fat people, and then you’ll turn to ridiculing them. You’ll find yourself a skinny girlfriend, and you’ll start weighing skinny jeans, you might even try a little coke. You’ll start having run-ins with the police, a DUI or two; you might even release a sex-tape. After one too many times of being banned from the playboy mansion your friends will do an intervention. And after therapy you’ll end you right where you began, fat and happy.

Posted by: Pookie at August 5, 2011 3:21 AM

Kinda dislike Jonah H, or at least tired of seeing him everywhere, but Moneyball looks kinda great.

Posted by: Seth at August 5, 2011 4:08 AM

The film snobs are angry. This film ain't for you.

Posted by: John at August 5, 2011 4:17 AM

Pure fuckkery this is!

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at August 5, 2011 8:24 AM

I'm just getting tired of films that try to show how hip they are by having kids swear. "Oh, look how edgy we are." No, you're not.

Posted by: Matt at August 5, 2011 8:51 AM

Jonah Hill might be the only person who actually looks better with the weight. He should revel in his character actor-ness his career will be much longer if he chooses that path. He is not leading man material. Mark my words, he will gain the weight back because that will be what is required of him. Fat actually works for some people... John Goodman.

Posted by: MRod at August 5, 2011 9:40 AM

Oh look. An R rated Adventures in Babysitting. Gotcha.

Except it doesn't have Penelope Ann Miller trying to survive a night in a Chicago bus station. And that just won't do.

Posted by: Kala at August 5, 2011 9:41 AM

I never thought this is where DGG's career would go. I was blown away by George Washington and All the Real Girls. I had such high hopes, I remember telling all my friends to watch out for him. Sure, I imagined maybe eventually being disappointed down the road- but this fast? and to do a complete 180 like that?

But honestly, this doesn't look THAT bad. I mean it definitely doesn't look good- but I have to agree aroorda- not as bad as The Change Up trailers. But the kids are cute and I still think Jonah Hill can be funny.

Posted by: THRILLHO at August 5, 2011 10:04 AM

"Bad Santa"
"Bad Teacher"
"Bad Sitter"
*sigh*

I bet they're working on Bad Cop as we speak.

Posted by: jM at August 5, 2011 10:32 AM

Jonah Hill skinny is starting to look like Tom Sizemore or a diseased version of Chris Penn in the Footloose era. It doesn't work.

Posted by: Pfft at August 5, 2011 10:41 AM

I bet they're working on Bad Cop as we speak.

Oopps, I left off "Bad Lieutenant."

Somebody should do a list of the best "Bad" movies.

Oh, wait ...

Hat tip. That's was brilliant.

Bad Lieutenant?

And also, I know I'll watch this when it hits HBO but I doubt I'll ever actively seek it out.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at August 5, 2011 10:47 AM

Ah, , beat me to it.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at August 5, 2011 10:49 AM

Not to nitpick but it's Adventures IN Babysitting, Dustin. Not "with" babysitting. Also? This looks horrible. Also also? Get the fuck off my lawn, aroorda, or I'll sick Chopper on yer balls.

Posted by: JenVegas at August 5, 2011 10:54 AM

I bet they're working on Bad Cop as we speak.

As well as a competing studio making a Good Cop movie to be released around the same time.

Swearing kids are the new rapping grannies.

Posted by: deeksurly at August 5, 2011 11:28 AM

Sure, it looks hackneyed, but... yeah, I'll rent this sometime.

Posted by: Thijs at August 5, 2011 11:33 AM

What the fk is with actors welcoming people to trailers now? I didn't like it when Seth Rogen did it, and I sure as hell don't like it when Jonah Hill does it. It's awkward and weird having assholes stare directly at you down the lens and be like 'hey! Welcome to the next two minutes where you'll see me make perfunctory dick comments, all cut to FinalCutPro and watched on your shitty little YouTube screen'.

Stop being more of a spread-legged whore than normal, Hollywood.

Posted by: Laurie at August 5, 2011 6:11 PM

Utter. Fucking. Garbage.

The only thing funny in all of this is I've never had the slightest interest in anything this Jonah dude does, and now have even less reason.

So, John, if that's even your real name ... not "film snobbery", pal, just a general wish that mankind wasn't going down the crapper.

Oh, and don't use my name.

Posted by: Johnnyboy at August 5, 2011 9:11 PM

Wow we went from mediocre movie to "mankind...going down the crapper."

The hyperbole on this site is getting a little out of hand. I can see why Dustin had that "calm the fuck down everyone," article this week.

Posted by: aroorda at August 6, 2011 12:30 AM

I attempted to watch Superbad, which by the way, was super bad, and while I'm no stranger to cuss words, motherfucker being my favorite...where was I? Oh yeah....swearing...swearing, and just swearing for the sake of swearing is not funny. I tried to tell a teenager this, he said he swore a lot to make people laugh, that anyone can say the dirty words, there is no talent in that, try it...shit, fuck, asshole, suck...blah blah blah. But try spontaneously and quickly coming up with a remark that actually gives someone the giggles? That is an art.

So anyway...Jonah Hill..fat Jonah Hill, skinny Jonah Hill, any Jonah Hill....is a total waste of celluloid space. He's just another low budget "fat guy" that Hollywood thought they could convince us was funny because he swore a lot. Hollywood, stop being a stupid teenager.

You are not too young to have seen Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (or Adventure's in Babysitting, the actual title this movie pulls plot from). I am 22 and I'm pretty sure I know both of those movies by heart. These are the movies that played on tv all of our lives. This Sitter movie is marketed toward 20 somethings and I'm a 20 something who thinks it looks stupid and knows it's been done (and much better).

Posted by: thelovelyjazmin at August 6, 2011 10:23 PM

Ads = money for Pajibs. All for it.

Jonah - fat. All for it.

Jonah + perpetual awkward half-smile now like he knows it didn't improve his looks and might actually degrade his comedic marketability. No, thanks.

Posted by: Protoguy at August 7, 2011 1:56 AM

GodDAMN I hate Jonah Hill with a motherfucking passion. No clue as to why anyone in Hollywood signed off on him as a leading man. When it comes to funny fat guys, I'll take the late John Candy, or John Goodman...hell, I'll even take Kevin James over Jonah Hill.

Posted by: TurnipTheRadio at August 7, 2011 3:40 PM

Since when did we start hating Jonah Hill? Dude is clearly funny even if some of his movies aren't every once in a while. And really? We're making fun of a person for improving his health and getting into shape? REALLY?

Otherwise, yea just bc you curse a lot doesn't mean its funny. Dumb Hollywood.

Posted by: Littlejon2001 at August 8, 2011 8:55 PM

The bottom line is definitely that in order to reduce weight you must use up more energy (or excess calories) then you eat! establish clear targets and you will reach your fat loss objectives. Great post.
