The Power of Christ Compels Him

Here’s the trailer for Priest from the same people who did the awful-but-almost-saved-by-the-presence-of-a-creepy-teethed-old-lady film Legion. They seem to be continuing their quest to make Paul Bettany even more of a bad ass than he already is. And have you seen the guy do the talk show circuit? Charming as hell.
This seems to be similar to Legion. Paul Bettany is religious but still wants to whoop some ass.
In this he’s a priest who kills vampires. It’s based on a manga by Tokyopop.
What do you think?

Cool, right? I like slimy vampires. Way better than sparkly or stuffy high collar kinds. And vampires really should be killed. I like that the church is pro-choice about them.

I don't think it's fair to exploit an albino. Selling films on his ethereal, ghost-like presence.
DESPICABLE.

I dont have a snails chance in a salt mine of figuring out the plot but I DO NOT CARE because Paul Bettany.
I know some of you are thinking 'Paul Bettany isn't a reason for things! That sentence didn't even make sense! What are you talking about you mad, limey bitch!' to which I shall answer 'Paul. Bettany'

Look. I'm a cat-person. Which I think means I'm lazy. At least whenever people tell me they are cat-people, I assume they mean they tend to nap a lot and are the nastier of the two heads on the CatDog. But now I don't know what I'm talking about.

Right. You tell us Bettany is charming, but then you refuse to post the evidence, leaving us lazy cats to muster up the motivation to search ourselves. It's not that I don't believe you, or that I don't like the man. I mean he was my favorite part of The DaVinci Code, but that might be just because he waved that whip thing around which I totally felt the urge to pounce on.

I was sold and then...then it happened. "In 3D." Because of COURSE it fucking is. Can we please stop making movies in 3D already?

Antonia Bird must be rolling in her grave after she saw what they've done to her franchise.

Looks like that thing from Pan's Labyrinth got out of the cellar after all....

Posted by: sansho1 at July 26, 2010 6:57 PM

Look, Legion was in no way a good film. But I was entertained. Kevin Durand (have I spelled that right? mercy, proofreading Nazis) with metal shield wings and a magical mace? SOLD.

Paul Bettany may be fair-skinned, but he is still badass. This may seem like Legion Part Deux, but actually it's not, it's better, because Legion II would have half the budget of the original and be written and directed by people who are second-string even to the original Legion auteurs, plus half the characters wouldn't be able to return.

I'm rambling now. I'll just say this: Paul Bettany.

Posted by: MM at July 26, 2010 6:58 PM

I'm with MM.

Paul Bettany.
Also I dont know why Alex thinks Paul Bettany. Paul. Bettany. Is an Albino.

Posted by: Nadine at July 26, 2010 7:11 PM

Now them there are decent depictions of vampires.

Funny story, my sister has been trying to convince me to read the Twilight books and see the movies.
I'm like "HELL NO! Why don't YOU read THESE?", and I gave her a vampire series by David Wellington in which the vampires are blood-thirsty animalistic monsters. She got a short way into the first book and then stopped because it gave her nightmares.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

*cough* Anyway... Priest looks like it might be a good film, and Bettany is cool.

Oh, and penelope, because you're a cat-person and a Shark Week Freak like me (congrats on making #3 in the EE, btw), I recommend to you the book, The Devil's Teeth, which I am currently reading, myself. Great read!

Posted by: Rykker at July 26, 2010 7:36 PM

Oh, hells yes, Rykker, the Wellington vampires are EVERYTHING vampires are meant to be. Ugly. Fucking. Killing. Machines.

With faces full of shark teeth. I'm getting the heebies just thinking about a couple of those covers. Yeesh.

Posted by: Meggrs at July 26, 2010 7:39 PM

KatSings, I had the exact same reaction.

And, Rykker, that story about your sister made me LOL. Anyone who tries to push Twilight and media of that ilk onto anyone else deserves those nightmares. That'll make a grown-up out of you.

Posted by: Jelinas at July 26, 2010 7:42 PM

I can not wait for Shark Week. It isn't a big thing over here like there but you bitches can bet it's me, my TV, and sharks, for a straight week. Yeah

Posted by: Nadine at July 26, 2010 7:44 PM

Shark Week.
I have the whole week off from work.
Fuck. Yeah.

Posted by: Rykker at July 26, 2010 7:56 PM

Ooh! Yeah, I'll be seeing this. I don't care if it's crap. I, too, am a Paul Bettany fan, and if Paul Bettany is an albino, than I have a thing for albinos.

penelope, I think I first got a crush on Bettany in A Knight's Tale. And I thought he was pretty charming in A Beautiful Mind too.

Posted by: lucy at July 26, 2010 8:01 PM

The other funny thing about that story of my sister is that she's only two years younger than me, and when she told me the Wellington book gave her nightmares, it caught me off guard; kinda shocked me.

To the point that I laughed. Kinda out loud. In her face. A little.

But I'm sure I owed her that from some point in the past.
Like, I'm still convinced that the occasional voices in my head can be traced back to her pushing me out of a shopping cart onto my head (she was sitting in the seat; I was standing in the back) when we were four and two, respectively.
The uppance for that still comes.

Posted by: Rykker at July 26, 2010 8:07 PM

Because Bettany wasn't charming or badass enough.

nadine: Paul Bettany IS a reason, and a good enough one at that! Even if he does have the amazing talent for picking just-okay movies and being the coolest thing in them.

And as for you, penelope, I give you a taste of the Bettany charm. http://youtu.be/3-g_kKCzYZs in which he steals an Eddie Izzard joke. There's more on YouTube. And really, he locked down on that Connelly girl. Of course he's charming!

Posted by: Sefa at July 26, 2010 8:11 PM

I'm sorry, but as a person who actually liked the original manga, this looks horrible. In the manga, the main character was a priest who denounced God to work for a demon so he could kill fallen angels in the Old West. It was cool. (there were no vampires involved, just angels and demons torturing humans for fun)

Posted by: Iris at July 26, 2010 8:11 PM

Any creature that looks like it was the pet spawn of one of Lord Cthulu's is definitely a must see. I like my Vampires to be badass, evil, and definitely killers. For that matter, Spike and Angel/Angelus are awesome. For that matter as well, Stepanie Meyer should be staked as soon as possible, possibly if possibly a Rice Fan before she went religious.

That being said, I cannot wait to see this, just because of the badassery of this. I don't even know about the whole Priest thing, but hey, any time a holy man starts pulling "Crazy Priest from Alacrud" I'm in. Even that priest, was awesome, minus his wanting to kill Alacrud.

Posted by: LordNinja at July 26, 2010 8:12 PM

So apparently this movie has:

Paul Bettany

Karl Urban

and (according to interviews): Enormous amounts of nudity

I AM SO IN!

Posted by: Vi at July 26, 2010 9:43 PM

and (according to interviews): Enormous amounts of nudity

Wha wha wha WHAT? Knock me over with a feather, that's just the icing on the cake. So why are they teasing us with this when it doesn't come out for practically a WHOLE YEAR?

Also, IMDB tells me that Maggie Q, Madchen Amick, Stephen Moyer, Christopher Plummer and Brad Dourif are also in this. That's a boatload of awesome right there...

Posted by: MM at July 26, 2010 9:49 PM

This seems to be similar to Legion.

How exactly? Because of religion? Otherwise I don't see how this is anything like that fucking piece of shit called Legion.

Also, did I hear the voice of the guy who played the crazy fucker in Pandorum?

Whatever...I want to see this.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at July 26, 2010 10:53 PM

But why do the vampires look like Voldemort?

Posted by: Tina at July 27, 2010 2:41 AM

@Tina

probably because in one reality Voldemort won and "mated" with a human who probably was the sire of a demon/angel and because of that, they turned out to be hideous self replicating creatures with no whim for human existance, only wanting to do what Voldemort couldn't because he was one, but they were many.

"And vampires really should be killed. I like that the church is pro-choice about them."

I think they're pro-death about them.

Posted by: BWeaves at July 27, 2010 8:41 AM

Well, I can't see the trailer at work, but I will simply say this. Paul Bettany was NEKKID in A Knight's Tale...he was rough and dirty and nekkid and fun and all the things that Chaucer should be. Then, he was invisible. Then, he started getting badass. If only it weren't for Jennifer "BigTITS" Connelly, he would be mine.

So, Bettany+vampires+gore=dammitjanet is SO in.

Posted by: dammitjanet at July 27, 2010 9:03 AM

Mmmm, Paul Bettany. I watched Legion for him alone, knowing it would be craptacular. This at least looks visually interesting. Monstrous vampires is a huge bonus. And Karl Urban is the frosting on the cake. Consider my ticket bought.
