Wonder Twins Activate: Form of ... Dumb

There’s still a few months before M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender is due to hit theaters, but they’ve already treated us to three (3) trailers. And as everyone knows, the number of trailers is inversely proportional to the quality of the movie (please note the Robert Downey, Jr. corollary, which demonstrates the exact opposite).

What’s not completely obvious from the trailer, however, is that The Last Airbender is a kid’s flick. No. Really. From what we’ve heard (from a random conversation with someone who worked on the film) is that it’s very, very kid friendly. And not much else.

I do think it’s cool, though, that one of the characters is a water bender. You know, in case the trajectory of your glass was a little off, he could ensure that your beverage arrived in your mouth with a minimal amount of spillage. Maybe he’s got a superhero friend that can turn into a bucket. Then, we’re getting somewhere!

It’s been a long day. Leave me alone.

SO COOL. Really. I love the show (yes, I know it's for kids. Yes, it's still totally amazing). And this looks excellent! AAAH! Zuko!

squeeeeeeeeeee!

I thought this movie had already come out and gone for some reason.

Oh man! I got freakishly addicted to this show a while back, since the whole first season was on Netflix. *Hi fives Esme*
The water-bending looks just as cool as it should be. *Shuns Dustin for weak joke*

I agree. Neither Wonder Twin ever turned into a bucket. Zan turned into water, Jayna turned into an eagle and she would carry Gleek who carried the bucket. The bucket was just a regular, plain ole bucket.

I'm actually really looking forward to this, even though it's a shamalamb flick. Loved the cartoon, if the movie(s) are even half as good, they'll definitely be worth watching.

I can't wait. I loved the hell out of the show, and the best part of it was that the relationship between the kids was hilarious. They had superpowers but they were still kids. I hope they stick to that.

Really, as long as they stick to the story and do a good job with the CGI (and it seems like they're doing that), this should be amazing.

Is that the kid from Slumdog Millionaire? Dude.

This actually looks fun.

And Dustin's mention of the bucket totally made me think, "And maybe the bucket's other superhero friend transforms into a walrus that wanders around all day looking for it!"

Hey, you started it, Rowles. Remember that bad jokes yield bad jokes.

I can't get behind this.:/ Loved the show, but after all the controversy of the making of this film - plus, just some damn MORONIC statements made by the casting director, I won't be seeing this.

Doesn't help that they're also pronouncing Sokka's name as "SOAK-ah." Seriously, how hard is that to get right when you have an entire series as reference material? If they can't even get that little detail right, I have no faith in the rest.

Posted by: luthien26 at March 25, 2010 6:24 PM

They're gonna fuck up Appa, I just know it.

I just tried watching the series again, and it did not hold up well. I don't think I'll be catching this is theatres.

I hope this is good! I hope this is good! I hope this is good!
I love the series and yes the relationship among the children was excellently portrayed. I really hope that stupidness does not ensue or I'm gonna have to scrape together some funds and fly my ass off this island to wherever Shyamalan(?) is hiding himself and do some serious bone breakage!

The animals better not be stupified either
Mini rant over.

Not gonna lie, this looks pretty boss.

Star Wars IV (I hate that I have to number the first one this way) was very very kid friendly as was The Muppet Movie and all the Pixar movies. Not necessarily a bad thing. I continue to have high hopes for this based on these trailers and I haven't even seen the original series.

Yay, crazy ol' eyes Jasper, with long hair again. Since that episode of Criminal Minds I've been waiting to see this...
Oh, and for all the rest of it, too. Fun!

I wonder if they're hoping to make this a series, because the trailer looks like the story only goes up to the first season finale.

I can bend water!

Here's how you do it.

You get a plastic comb and run it through your hair very fast several times, so you build up static electricity. (Obviously this works better on a cold day with no humidity.)

Then you start the water in your tap running. This has to be a very thin stream of water.

Place the comb near the stream of water and the water will curve towards the comb, and you can move the water about when you move the comb.

This is because magnetism and electricity are related, and when you get the static electricity going in the comb, and the water molecules are like little weak magnets themselves, they become attracted to each other.

It helps to have a hubby with a Ph.D in rocket science.

BWeaves, you are so cool to me right now. I LOVE home science experiments!!!

Hope it fails miserably, these anime adaptions need to stop before they get to the good stuff. Also, of course it's a kids film, how many adults (who aren't losers) watch the cartoon?

Posted by: Steph at March 26, 2010 1:39 PM

I call shenanigans on the "adults watching this are losers" bit. I've seen the cartoon, and there is a hefty dose of story to go along with the animation and kiddie lessons. That shit gets dark.

How many cartoons have you actually watched Steph?

Posted by: vryce at March 26, 2010 2:59 PM

Seems like whoever put that trailer together did the Watchmen trailer? Awesome show, got my kids into it and got hooked myself. Ignore anyone who says cartoons are just for kids, they obviously just want to be negative for the sake of being negative.

M. Night might just be able to redeem himself with this, that is if he follows the story and doesn't try ramming the whole first season into one movie.

Posted by: polkafrenzy at March 27, 2010 3:56 AM

Oh yea, Kick-Ass is way more trailercentric then this.

Posted by: polkafrenzy at March 27, 2010 3:56 AM

You lost me at M. Night Shymalan. I think he just stopped being able to create good movies and his whole 'twist' shtick got old a while ago. It turns out Aang is the Firelord at the end.

Posted by: Kyle Demard at March 27, 2010 10:01 AM

Ughughugh, feck. I can't believe how many people are saying that they want to see this.

Yes, the show was good. But you know what was good? The fact that there was humour. Which the "this is srsbusiness" trailers make it deathly apparent is completely going to be missing in the movie. No refreshingly non-PC blind jokes, foaming mouth guy will be conspicuously absent, as will the hybrid animals...bet you they DESTROY Sokka's character entirely.

Also, the entire main cast is white (minus Dev Patel). Friends off before it even comes out.

All I can say is, f*8k you, Shammy. I refuse to watch your crappy movie ruination of possibly the only good cartoon to air on Nickelodeon since Invader Zim.
