The Iron Lady Trailer: Why Does Margaret Thatcher Sound Like Julia Child?

Here, folks, is your brank-spankin’ new trailer for Meryl Streep’s The Iron Lady, in which she plays a Margaret Thatcher who is apparently in need of a make-over. The film, which also stars broadbent, focuses on the price that Thatcher played for power, which was apparently giving up her hat. Tsk tsk.

Check out the trailer.

Does anyone else find that her British accent sounds an awful lot like her Julia Child, only slightly less endearing? And if you are curious, like I am, about who plays the young Margaret Thatcher in the film, it’s Alexandra Roach. She looks like this:

Why not just get Streep’s daughter, Mamie Gummer? And give us more excuses to say Mamie Gummer? It has a nice sound to it, doesn’t it? It’s what I say after I apply my lipstick to distribute evenly between the lips. Mamie Gummer.

It is a funny old world, isn’t it?

Er...I'd need to see more I think. But her voice is not quite right there. When she first came on screen it looked a bit like a farce. Or like they'd modeled her on the Spitting Image puppet.

And to share with you what we used to sing at school:

Margaret Thatcher, put her in the bin
Put the lid on, sellotape the rim
If she gets out, bonk her on the head
Glory, glory, Margaret Thatcher's dead!

I'm from the North, if that explains it any better.

Sight unseen, trailer unwatched, I am calling Oscar in 2012 for Meryl Streep.

The price SHE paid for power?

Jesus Fucking Christ!

What about the price the rest of us paid when she was in power?

I am...not convinced.

When Thatcher left power, my friend's mum danced around the house singing, "Ding dong, the witch is dead".

Anyone who hasn't seen/heard it, go search YouTube for Elvis Costello's song about Margaret Thatcher.

"And when they finally put you in your grave
I'll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down"

Amen, Jerce.

She doesn't sound anything like Julia Child. Child was from Southern California and had a very high pitched voice. I just watched a clip of the real Thatcher giving a speech, and Streep is pretty close.

What PaddyDog said.

So you make a Biopic of Thatcher, which would only be of any interest to people in the UK and Ireland, and then you make her the hero of the story, despite her being hated by most people in the UK and Ireland... why did anybody producing this think they'd get any money from it?

Idiots

I have to see more because right now it looks like a bad SNL skit.

Couldn't they just have gotten Imelda Staunton to reprise her Umbridge role in slightly less pink outfits? Because that's exactly who Maggie Streep reminded me of. Brr.

What a bunch of whinging pinkos!

That's a weird trailer. As someone who makes weird trailers on occasion, I get what they were going for, but it didn't quite work.

She was certainly despised by the intellectual giants in our artiste class, but then they also despise Tony Blair, so maybe it's just in their nature. For those reasons, I expect this to be a hatchet job.

Julia Child? You're too kind. I'm thinking Mrs. Doubtfire. I have to see the whole film though, Meryl can do no wrong in my book.

Damn, that music is so familiar. I'm thinking Nine Inch Nails, but it's not from 'The Social Network' or 'With Teeth.' Any ideas?

Isn't it from the soundtrack to 'Moon'?

So, the trailer says it's coming out in JANUARY 2012...does that mean wide release, with the usual one-week limited opening at the end of 2011? Otherwise, it's completely out of the 2012 Oscar race, meaning it sucks like nothing has sucked before.
