I'm Screaming Revenge Again

The Horseman Trailer / TK

The Horseman is directed by first-time Australian director Steven Kastrissios. Starring Peter Marshall, it’s about a father who discovers a particularly nasty pornographic video of his daughter, shortly after she’s found dead with numerous drugs in her system. Understandably enraged, he goes on a crowbar-wielding rampage to find those responsible, and along the way encounters a young girl who reminds him of his daughter.

Check the trailer:

It’s brutal stuff, the kind of gritty, rough revenge flick that, if executed properly, might be pretty damn affecting and intense. It also appears to have some pretty innovative methods of torturing/punishing the bad guys, but it doesn’t necessarily look like an enjoyable experience (which was a common reaction in some of the festival reviews). It’s played well on the film festival circuit, and Marshall certainly seems to have the simmering, vengeful rage thing down. It looks like it’s got some pretty grisly violence — reminiscent of Liam Neeson’s Taken, but with less restraint and more bloodshed. That’s not a bad thing, mind you. It comes out in limited release later this month.

If anything I felt that Taken took the easy route in many scenes, going for cheap movie antics (like car chases and shootouts) instead of the dirty, gritty kind of backroom torture you'd expect to be the bread-and-butter of a former CIA agents daily routine.

Anyway this reminds me more of The Limey than Taken.

Um, no.

I'm not big on the revenge film, though The Horseman trailer seems to suggest that maybe there are some good performances and interesting screenplay decisions to make it stand out among the pack. Something eventually has to join Last House on the Left and Oldboy as "Revenge Films I Like Watching," right?

It may be well executed but, judging from the trailer alone, it doesn't look like anything I haven't seen before. That may be inevitable, however, as I'm not sure just how far the revenge genre can be stretched.

Please tell me the whole thing isn't shot in the jumpy, five-cuts-a-second style the trailer uses and that makes my head explode.

What was the name of the George C. Scott movie where he went after his daughter's porn producers?

Ah, "Hardcore."

Silly Rabbit. Mel owns the revenge flick. And, what a coincidence, he's got a new one coming out. Step away from the table.
There's a small seat in the corner for Thomas Jane...but that's it...

You will never be able to beat Old Boy so why try? That, or Death Wish. Have you ever noticed that every few years several of the "revenge" films come out? What was it the last time? Kevin Bacon and then Jodie Foster?

Prisco and I saw this at SXSW...really, really good, I thought.

This film looks frakin fantastic. It's been a good long while since a decent revenge flick came out.

@ Neodiogenes: the director apparently cited the Limey as an influence.

I typically hate this genre and it's sister genre of "torture porn" but at least this film looks like it has genuine peril for the protagonist. The American films seem to usually portray seem much cleaner, safer and the avenger seems too confident in his actions. The star of this film seems much more frayed, endangered and desperate (at least from the trailer)

Despite all that, as the father of a young girl I could not possibly find sitting down and putting my mind in that frame to be in any way, shape or form enjoyable. I don't think I'd ever be able to break free from the nightmare world the on-screen father would be in.
