The Descendants Trailer 2

Alexander Payne has kept to himself since Sideways back in 2004, so I suppose getting Clooney to star in a film is one way to get back on the horse. He’s making The Descendants which is an adaptation of the book by the same name, which Intern Rusty reviewed last year and thought was quite good. Here’s the obligatory plot summary:

From Alexander Payne, the creator of the Oscar-winning SIDEWAYS, set in Hawaii, THE DESCENDANTS is a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic journey for Matt King (George Clooney) an indifferent husband and father of two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki. The event leads to a rapprochement with his young daughters while Matt wrestles with a decision to sell the family’s land handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries.

And the trailer:

Eh. Look at me! I’m serious and quirky! The voice over just makes me argumentative instead of selling me on the film. Does anyone actually think people in Hawaii live in a problem-free paradise? It’s too green. That probably means there are dinosaurs just waiting to eat quirky characters.

Do none of his friends live in Hawaii? That might be part of his problem.

The first trailer was definitely better. Like streets ahead better. Also, didn't Jim Rash, aka Dean Pelton, work on the script?

When I saw the Clooney running in the teaser, it reminded me of something. Now that I see this is Alexander Payne, I know exactly what it was: Paul Giamatti running through the vineyard in Sideways. I've never seen About Schmidt - does it have a similar scene? Has Payne copyrighted that move?

Are they going to show the white kids getting beaten up? Then it would really show Hawaii.

The first trailer was waaay better.
