The Debt was a fairly well received Mossad-hunting-Nazis Israeli film released in 2007. Unfortunately, it was completely and utterly unwatchable outside of Israel since the filmmakers had the gall to release the film in Hebrew of all languages instead of a good and proper language like English. So they’re remaking it in English.

Of course they also managed to land some real talent: Helen Mirren and Ciaran Hinds. They also managed to land Sam Worthington. After all of his two-dimensional performances in three-dimensional films, it will be interesting to see if Worthington drops down to one dimension in a 2D film. John Madden (who directed Shakespeare in Love and guided the Raiders to their first Super Bowl victory) is directing.

Here’s the press release plot summary, which at first glance looks to be Munich with a few of the details switched around:

In 1965, three young Israeli Mossad agents on a secret mission capture and kill a notorious Nazi war criminal. Now, thirty years later, a man claiming to be the Nazi has surfaced in the Ukraine and one of the former agents must go back undercover to seek out the truth.

And here’s the trailer:

He's also won three Stanley Cups. Is there anything this guy can't do?

Lose weight and fly.

I like the straight up white people playing Mossad agents. I also kept thinking that Jessica Chastain girl was Bryce Dallas Howard.

Mossad agents, like Israelis, comes in all shapes and colors, those who work in eastern europe are usually white :)

But a guy born in England and raised in Australia? A girl from Northern California? Another from New Zealand?

That's what I'm saying, straight up white.

I dunno. I worked with an Israelis guy for a few years. He looked as straight up white, or more so, than any of those actors. He was quite pale. And bald.

Well fuck, I guess I'm just an asshole.

I just figured they might have got...you know...actual Israelis to play Israelis.

Marton Csokas got a job yay

Um, this looks SCHWEET.

And SLW's comment about Sam Worthington possibly dropping to one dimension in a 2D film made me choke with laughter.

Why? Lord knows we have enough Brits and Americans playing each other, not to mention Germans, Russians, South Africans, or whatever. It's not exactly a new thing.

As much as I tend to roll my eyes at this trend of re-making recent foreign movies, this actually looks fairly awesome. I'm tempted to believe that Worthington's bland mehness cannot overcome the awesome of everyone else in that movie.

Mmmm. I love the Israeli accent.

Hey, they got an Australian guy to play ROBIN HOOD. And one to play William Wallace as I recall. Not enough British or Scotish actors out there I guess...
