It's a Mad World

The Crazies is a remake of a 1973 George Romero film about a virus that affects a small Pennsylvania town and basically turns them insane. It’s not exactly a zombie movie — but the rules are similar. The remake, though it comes from Breck Eisner — whose one notable credit was 2005’s terrible, Sahara, although he’s also attached to 2012’s Flash Gordon — nevertheless looks like a pretty decent. It stars Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell.

Having never seen or even heard of the original movie (what kind of awful goddamn Romero fan have I become), I can’t say whether the remake is a good idea or a bad one. But the evidence from this trailer suggests that, at least it’s been done decently. I just wish that hadn’t went back to the “Mad World” well once again.

"hadn't went"...good heavens.

Posted by: laredo at October 2, 2009 11:13 AM

I'm with janet on this. Timothy Olyphant? As a sheriff? Oh yeah.

God bless pancakes.

Ok, seriously, did you guys record the "mad world" song over the trailer? There is no way a professional is responsible for that. Worst use of a song in a trailer ever. God it just doesn't make any sense, why the hell did they do that?? This does not bode well for my weekend.

Posted by: Lunchbox20 at October 2, 2009 11:17 AM

Mad is another word for Crazy.

Does that help Lunchbox?

Posted by: Colin at October 2, 2009 11:33 AM

And I was just getting over the use of "Mad World" for that Gears of War commercial!!

ZOMG quick get me another emo song to slit my pale teenage wrists to!! Oh god, quick, get me a Bright Eyes playlist!!

Remake or not, Seth Bullock killing crazy zombified folks = my ass in the seat on opening weekend.

Radha Mitchell and Timothy Olyphant? Hot damn.

I think my favorite Radha Mitchell role was the one she played in Rogue. It was so different and great compared to something like Silent Hill or Surrogates. She's so damn fine when she's not all gussied-up.

Posted by: Snath at October 2, 2009 11:50 AM

Favorite Radha Mitchell role - Pitch Black.

I'm with TK. She's so good in that movie I even sat through Melinda and Melinda.

In fact, if I could get a Mitchell/Olyphant sandwich, that'd be great. Get on that, Jesus, I've been kissing your ass with no real payoff for long enough.

CRAPDAMMIT. I was in a Timothy Olyphant-inspired happy place. Then Marra goes and mentions being between two people and ass-kissing and my mind went straight to the Human Centipede. FUCK. I'm ruined for life.

I hate you.

Posted by: Marra at October 2, 2009 3:43 PM

How many human centipedes does it take to screw in a light bulb?

NONE! It's too busy EATING SHIT AND DYING!!

(i'm sure someone can do better than that. i'm very tired)

Posted by: Lauren at October 2, 2009 4:23 PM

Marra is a hater, but honestly, that should win you the dvd.

Human Centipede makes everything better.

Actually, Human Centipede makes anything bad look less bad in comparison.

Posted by: MM at October 2, 2009 5:06 PM

I've never seen the original, but did that trailer just completely give away the ending?

Posted by: Sally at October 2, 2009 5:32 PM

Look...Olyphantastic is in a new movie. Hope it doesn't suck too much wind.

Posted by: bignick at October 2, 2009 6:35 PM

Want. To. See.

Not ashamed! Quite the contrary; I'm excited.

Whether this movie is awful or fantastic, it's right up my alley. I loves me some "the whole world done gone mad" movies!

Posted by: Sarah at October 2, 2009 6:48 PM

I wouldn't say so much "zombie" as the rage filled fuckers in 28 Days/Weeks Later.

On account they are killing in cool ways. You know, like the eye gouging scene in both films. Zombies don't eye gouge.

I wish I was a guy sometimes so I could say something along the lines of "I have such a hard on for this movie" to say how excited I got by this trailer. Now I now I can say that and the likes of you people would know what I was implying. But I want more than that, I want to physically show how excited I am for this movie, and what better than a raging boner?? Huh? Answer me that!

Posted by: ashes at October 2, 2009 7:26 PM

ashes, I believe they coined the term "clit-wood" around here just for that purpose.

Seconded! My thoughts exactly.

Posted by: MM at October 2, 2009 7:35 PM

MM, of course! How could I have forgotten?! I am going to blame my temporary memory loss on the fact that I have been gone from Pajiba for a week, as I was in Hell, otherwise known as Miami.

Posted by: ashes at October 2, 2009 7:41 PM

Why yes Timothy Olyphant I will have your babies, why you didn't even have to ask. Right here, in front of my family at my Great-Grandmother's 90th birthday-sure let me just take off my pants.

Posted by: Jasper Buckleman at October 3, 2009 1:12 AM

Timothy Olyphant is still hawt.

Posted by: faye at October 3, 2009 1:50 AM

Saw it in a screening and it's pretty decent.

Posted by: ChaCha at October 4, 2009 10:43 PM

I, too, wasn't a fan of the "Mad World" song in the trailer, but considering that the only other trailer music is " Mr. Blue Sky" by ELO, they couldn't do anything else.

Posted by: Danny Smooth at October 5, 2009 7:57 AM

The filmmakers just dropped the ball. Imagine going from workaday suburbia to black-gummed hell! Such potential wasted.
