Denzel Gets Righteous, Motherf**kers

Denzel Washington Book of Eli.jpg

Below is the first full length trailer for Denzel Washington’s Book of Eli, a post-apocalyptic flick from The Hughes Brothers, who have been strangely absent since the stylistically killer 2001 Johnny Depp film, From Hell, which is one of the first notable graphic novels that was turned into a film. The premise itself — a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind — isn’t exactly compelling, but both the visual style of the trailer, in addition to the cast (Gary Oldamn and Mila Kunis join Denzell) are impressive.

It’s a January release date, which doesn’t always bode well, but this trailer makes my funny parts tingle. And you’d better believe it features the Denzel stare. You know what I’m talking about — that patronizing, I will fuck your shit up glare. I am absolutely all about this movie.

Okay, it looks decent enough and I'll go see it. But tell me the trailer doesn't make it look like a dry land version of "Waterworld"?

You've got the post-apocalyptic setting, the wandering death-dealing hero, the mythic quest, the charismatic but psycho gang leader, the disaffected female survivor who learns from the hero to believe in herself, etc. etc.

I'm sure it's going to be much better (almost HAS to be), but the trailer sure makes like look like Kevin Costner is trying (yet) again...

I'd be more interested if it didn't look like it was set in my neighborhood.

Gee I liked this better when it was called Children of Men.

this trailer makes my funny parts tingle.

You should probably get that checked. Especially since you've dealt with so much Baynis this year.

Hm. Desertworld. Well that just rained on my parade.

You say Gary Oldman, I say I'm in.

Denzel doesn't always work for me, but in this case he's making my funny parts tingle too.

Denzel kills armies of mooks? With a sword? Oldman as the Big Bad? Sign me up.

(No, I do not get Mila Kunis - she's ok-kinda-cute but no major beauty, or even an action star, but, hey, Your Mileage May Vary.)

Uh, what? That's more of a stretch than Rosie O'Donnell's pants.

Denzel, Gary Oldman. I am so there.

Since I'm Gary Oldman's bitch, I'll be watching this. Probably in the theater. But seriously, he's been cast as a religious figure again? Fuck me running and call me Sally. Can we get this man some roles he hasn't done before?

Methinks the script writer owns a copy of Fallout 3 and just decided to rip the setting.

Dear godtopus,

Please let this movie deliver on its promises.

Amen.

My prediction:

Denzel dies at the end.

but Mila Kunis takes over protecting the Maguffin - er - book - at the end of the film.

i have spoken

Exactly. So yes, I will be seeing it.

i'm there for denzel and oldman. but i caught the trailer in the theatre, and worried how little it wanted to impart about the plot. the trailer gives us mad max, but cooler, yet hints about a much more interesting story that may or may not be there.

but, you say post-apocalyptic and i say i'm jumpin

"Hm. Desertworld. Well that just rained on my parade."

-Would this not be more like The Postman? At least in settings- hopefully not in quality.

bleujayone has me thinking...how long before someone makes a post-apocalyptic movie and invites Kevin Costner to be in it, as an in-joke. And would he accept?

Posted by: Jacktrade at September 29, 2009 10:48 AM

I love me some end-of-the-world movies. But aside from Gary Oldman, I'm not excited, mainly because Denzel himself looks utterly bored. He doesn't seem to be expending the slightest amount of energy in those fight scenes; he's just going through the choreography. And I'm a wee bit tired of the protagonist who is the master of any and all situations. It doesn't matter if he's outnumbered a million to one, somehow he knows where every bad guy is at every moment and can take out every one with a weapon he fashions right on the spot. It's more fun to root for a hero like Mal Reynolds, who screws up fairly often and doesn't always win.

Why doesn't he put that damn book to use instead of schlepping it around the countryside?

Deadwood & Rome have spoiled me for these type of epic movies.

Any time I see something like this, it makes me think "Damn, that would be awesome for 13 episodes a year for 2-3 years."

But then it would get cancelled before finishing and I would have to punch a TV.

1.) This is two trailers that have raised little more than a "meh" from me. One more fizzled promo and it's into the DVD rent column for me.

2.) What joy I did get out of this trailer was, as you guessed, Gary Oldman.

3.) Admit it...you wish Gary Oldman was your magical godfather after I mentioned his name in reason 2.

4.) EEEEH-VVVRY-OOOONNNEEE! (The second thing that should have come to mind after the initial mention of Gary Oldman, unless your name is Harrison Ford.)

I have to say that the movie seems to have a lot of potential. Maybe I'm just a silent Denzel fan, but still the trailer rocks. Watched it here: http://trailers-watch.com/the-book-of-eli/
