The Blinky Teaser Makes Me Feel Funny in My Belly Button

I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m convinced that my generation’s irrational fear of clowns stems back to Poltergeist, and the absolute terror of the clowns in that film, especially if you were young (when I revisited the movie a couple of years back, I realized how family-friendly it was, and then I jumped into a time machine, went back to 1984 and kicked my 9-year-old ass for being a whiny little pansy).

Anyway, I don’t know a lot about Blinky, from director Ruairi Robinson, except that it used to be called Bad Robot and that it stars Max Records of Where the Wild Things Are fame. I do know, however, that the robot in the teaser trailer gives me the same uneasy feeling I had seeing that clown in Poltergeist. It’s fucking creepy, people. It makes me feel funny in my belly button.

Well they're going to kill the golden retriever, obviously, so I'll never see it.

Seriously? Golden retriever? Fuck you guys.

Could have been a golden retriever in a wheelchair.

Yeah...twig is probably right. Also, this is terrifying.

Wow, that was a seriously unnerving trailer. I really want to see this movie! Now let's just hope they can maintain the eerie feeling all the way through the film.

I'm sorry, but did you just refer to Poltergeist as "family friendly"?

Are we thinking about the same movie here - the one where some guy rips his face off in the mirror?

Oh no. I'm not afraid of clowns because of Poltergeist. That salt bath in the psychological wound was inflicted on me years after I had my traumatic clown experience. In fact, I had the joy of reliving it in May when I discovered that Disney World did not remove THE FACELESS CLOWN MASKS from their electric light parade. Dear Godtopus, they're harlequin clowns with indented--not painted--eye-covering masks on. They made me piss my pants when I was 4 and did it to me again at 24. That was not a happy way to end the day.

So ... a mobile version of GERTY?

Sold.

that was really creepy

WAAAAALLLLLLLLL-EEEE!

Aaah! Kill it with fire!

Unseemly robot in a darkened room and the rain for the win.

I was thinking the same thing. Parents smoke pot. People are in a pool with dead bodies. That movie still scares the shit out of me.

OK, I scare easily, so as an exercise, I watched this without sound. I'm going to have to assume the eerie effect comes from the sound, because what I saw was adorable. And I choose to keep it that way. La la la la la...

I'm sure that JJA's legal team would've opened up a massive can of legal whoop ass if somebody had been stupid enough to try to release this as "Bad Robot". That said... looks kinda creepy, hope it lives up to the teaser.

This robot looks like an Allie Brosh cartoon.

Patty O'Green: The audio consists of the kid repeating the following, over and over:

"All my friends have one. He's my new best friend."

I'll take an order of Fuck.
And as well, a side of Yes!

Posted by: PissBoy at November 15, 2010 4:36 PM

I just watched Poltergeist again around Halloween and the fucking clown is still scary. Family friendly my ass.

Posted by: Paultera at November 15, 2010 5:15 PM

a) Poltergeist will always be scary (only the first 2 though, that third one is dumb)

b) wasn't this movie already made and called Child's Play? Cause this surely looks a bit like a rip off of that to me.
Chucky? Also always scary. And so is this too-happy-faced robot.

Posted by: JenVegas at November 15, 2010 5:40 PM

1. Chucky was the doll in Child's Play and Child's Play 2.

2. There was a clown in Poltergeist?

3. I'm gonna watch the shit outta this!

So, it's AI if David got sick of humanity's bullshit and opened a can of binary torture on us fleshbags?

I AM ALL OVER THAT!!

Posted by: Shane at November 16, 2010 5:59 AM

I can definitely trace my fear of clowns back to Poltergeist. I too watched it recently and didn't find it quite as horrifying as I once did, but it was still freaky as hell.
