The 'Annie' Trailer is a Shot of Cute, Straight to the Heart

By Vivian Kane | Trailers | March 5, 2014 | Comments ()

The first trailer for the Annie remake is here and it’s… surprisingly perfect. They seem to have modernized the original without going over the top. And the cast looks fantastic. Quvenzhan√© Wallis is adorable and spunky, Rose Byrne is impeccably poised (duh), and Jamie Foxx has the straight-talking Papa Grinch thing down. Even Cameron Diaz, despite a few too many “we’re relevant and topical!” one-liners, owns it.

Major cry fest, coming this Christmas.

OK, OK, I admit it: I hate Annie. I want to punch her in her creepy no-pupil eyes whenever I hear Tomorrow. Still, even if I always loved the story, Diaz looks horrible here. It's like a total disconnect from the rest of the film. Too bad, because Wallis is adorable and I've been obsessed with her since Beasts of the Southern Wild.

  • Maddy

I always found Annie to be kind of insufferable and annoying because I have a heart made of stone. I actually might watch this movie though.

  • Target_Blonde

OUCH! I accidentally let my fingertips into the scenery and Cameron Diaz gnawed them right off!!

Also, no. Sorry guys but unless Ann Reinking, Albery Finney (*the* Daddy Warbucks in my book) and Carol Burnett are involved there are no other Annie movies for me.

Hat tip to chanohack for the assist. If anyone needs me, I'll be updating my Stephen Sondheim playlist on Spotify.

  • chanohack

You forgot Burnadette Peters. Apologize quickly before she sees this, there may still be time.

  • Target_Blonde

    Thank you!

  • It'll rack up millions at the box office come Christmas time. It'll make fat stacks.

  • dizzylucy

Annie was my favorite as a kid (maybe tied with the Goonies) and when this was (originally) announced with Will Smith's kid starring, I was not pleased. But maybe I'm just a softie for the story, because that actually looks better than I expected.
I do agree that Diaz's tone seems off though, too over the top.

  • Ruthie O

It may help that this is not Will Smith's kid. The young woman you saw in the trailer is Oscar nominated Quvenzhané Wallis.

  • dizzylucy

Oh I know, sorry that wasn't clear. I think the casting of Quvenzhane is a huge factor in me being pleasantly surprised by the trailer, she's got a great presence on screen.

  • Ruthie O

Yeah, I completely agree. She just bursts with charm and character. I'm happy to see she's leading another feature film; hopefully, this means more photos of her on the red carpet with her puppy purses!

  • dizzylucy

Puppy purse! I still kind of want one.

  • BWeaves

I thought it looked cute for what it was. My parents eat this type of movie up.

  • BlackRabbit

And that little girl is totally wrong for the role of Annie, and I think every
one here knows why, they're just afraid to say it so they don't look un-"PC". Well, I am never afraid of speaking truth to power, so here it is: She doesn't have those creepy all-white eyes. That's it. Strike me down with your anger.

  • foolsage

    We were all thinking it.

  • BlackRabbit

I'd forgotten the dog had them too. Is...is that her familiar?

  • foolsage

No, that is her Master, the Soulflayer, Devourer of Carrion, Ruler of the Undershadows. She does not exist without him. His will is her will. His words are her words.

Gaze into his empty eyes and know despair, mortal.

Damn, why you gotta be so eye-cist.

  • BlackRabbit

My mother was an optometrist, my father a pirate with two eyepatches. Theirs was a complex love.

  • I'd read that.

  • Bob Genghis Khan

Ummmm maybe I had crazy pills for breakfast, but I'll disagree with literally everything you said. Looks like a pandering, shameless remake that's only intended for a certain demographic, Diaz appears to be an (extremely) early front runner for a Razzie, and renaming the character "Stacks"...yeah.

  • Ruthie O

I agree about Diaz's performance, but I'm not following the "certain demographic" aspect. Which demographic do you see this as pandering to? Seemed like it was going for a wide appeal to me.

  • Birdie

Did we watch the same trailer?

  • Tinkerville

My thoughts exactly. This was just grating.

  • Repo

Yeah. Or I'm just way too cynical for this sort of thing anymore. :(

  • ellie

Really, really not finding Cameron Diaz convincing as Miss Hannigan..

  • It looks really fake and forced. Which is disappointing. I thought she'd be better than that.

  • Alicia

There can be only one. And that one is Carol Burnett, obviously.

  • Bob Genghis Khan

Annnnnd suddenly it's clear why Sandra Bullock passed on this one.

  • VonnegutSlut

It's like she thinks she's in a shitty, shitty sketch comedy parody of ANNIE & everyone else is trying to play it straight as a fun, lovable musical. The tones don't match--that's what so jarring.
