Funny, Mine Are Usually Neither Good Nor Old Fashioned: The A Good Old Fashioned Orgy Trailer

I like Jason Sudeikis, I really do, but recently Hollywood’s insistence on making him into a leading man feels akin to a very public attempt to make “fetch” happen. I loved him as Liz Lemon’s first real love interest, Floyd, on “30 Rock” and he was perfectly reasonably douchey as the gang’s long lost pal Schmitty on “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia,” but I just don’t find him engaging enough to carry a movie. I guess I’m not alone, considering every movie he’s starred in, so far, has been an ensemble comedy. His new film doesn’t seem any different except that, whereas he was one of three in Horrible Bosses (or one of two in the relatively horrible Hall Pass), in A Good Old Fashioned Orgy he plays the ostensible lead - the Luke Wilson role from Old School. I had to watch the trailer a couple of times before I bought it, but Sudeikis may just be a perfect fit.
“Perfect fit.” Get it? Oh, shut up. Watch the trailer:
Like I said, I had to watch it more than once before I was sold. The premise is interesting, I dig most of the actors/comedians involved (even Leslie Bibb, who showed some decent comedic chops in “The League”), and I can relate to all of the situations and scenarios on display… well, with the exception of the one from the title, alas. But, I nodded in understanding more than I laughed, which isn’t great from a trailer for a comedy. My favorite part was when Tyler Labine pushed that lovely young woman into the pool, but mainly because I just like Tyler Labine and seeing people get pushed into pools.
Obviously, we’ll have to wait and see if the finished product is any good, and hopefully a better, funnier trailer will be released before the movie comes out September 2, 2011. Until then, we can take solace in that excellent, if not quite super famous, cast. Besides those mentioned above, the film also stars Will Forte, Nick Kroll, Lindsay Sloane, Lucy Punch, Don Johnson, and Martin Starr. It will also be rated R, which, considering the (exceedingly) excellent title, is a good thing. I quite like the poster, too, and one might say it’s a little old fashioned.

One might.

I want this movie to be funny because all of these actors are so just sort of refreshingly normal in relation to the shiny people of hollywood who often headline these sorts of ensemble comedies. Like I would hang out with these people. I don't know if I would have an orgy with them....I mean if they had asked me like 15 years ago hell yeah. Now? Not so much.
