Super Theatrical Trailer: Now With 100% More Fillion

Super is doing a super (ha!) job of keeping on the radar just enough that we still know it’s coming out without getting in our faces enough that we get sick of it before it ever actually hits theaters. So this is the strategic response to backlash, the backlash of the backlash if you will: an appropriate amount of advertising. But wait, if everyone picks up on this strategy, then every film will advertise the appropriate amount, and then being innocuous will be the surest way of actually being considered ocuous.

In any case, this latest full length trailer for Super nails what a second or third trailer leading up to the release is supposed to do: it shows us a couple new things without giving away the entire film. Keeps us interested without sating us. The two biggest new things are Kevin Bacon and Nathan Fillion. Okay, so Fillion is in it for all of a half second, but it’s a quality half second. It’s the sort of half-second that when laid out with sixty of its friends, becomes a full-fledged cameo.

It’s hard to argue that Rainn Wilson isn’t just playing Dwight again and that Ellen Page isn’t just playing every character she always plays again, but sometimes the same old thing works just fine. And Kevin Bacon is much better when he plays evil.

OK, that was half a second of Fillion that I need to know much more about.

Was that Ellen Page with X-23 claws?

The confused is my penis.

SHUT UP CRIME

Am I the only one that things Ellen Page is grossly overrated? She'd be fine if she could actually play a different role but obviously she can't.

Regardless, I'm still excited for this movie.

Don't steal, don't do drugs, don't molest kids. Words to live by.

You know, I have a thing for guys with long hair, but I'm not sure that that look is working for Nathan Fillion. I'm willing to reserve judgement until I have more info, but yeah, I'm not so sure.

This is your big chance with me, superhero movies. Don't. Fuck. It. Up.

Given that I have an unnatural love for Slither, I'm really looking forward to this.

Posted by: Groundloop at March 7, 2011 11:07 AM

Slither love ain't unnatural. Well, unless it's with Grant by the end of the movie.

this looks like someone crossed kick-ass and defendor, but without the cool of kickass, or the pathos and tragedy of defendor.

saturated market?

the last thing i liked ellen page in was regenesis, where she played a snarky precocious kid. it worked for a kid character. it doesn't work for her adult characters. certainly doesn't help that she never actually grew up--she looks, sounds and acts exactly as she did when she was a kid, so its just really awkward when she is supposed to be an adult interacting with adults.

slither was a work of genius, I should probably feel more generosity for this new movie

Rainn Wilson and James Gunn were in town for Emerald City Comicon on Saturday and I was lucky enough to attend their panel and their screening of the movie later that night. The movie definitely has its flaws... but I'd rather not get socked in the esophagus so I won't discuss content here. Let's just say that there are some things in the third act that confused me on initial viewing and frustrated me upon futher contemplation. Regardless, I did find myself laughing through the entire film (sometimes out of pity, sometimes out of discomfort, but mostly because it's hilarious; Nathan Fillion rock your face off). Definitely worth a watch--James Gunn wanted to make an unpredictable film and Super certainly has its fair share of WTFBBQ. My friends loved it and thought it was awesome; I didn't like its inconsistencies and how the story just glosses over loose ends. According to James Gunn, however, it is intended to be a divisive film... so I guess mission accomplished.

Side note: Rainn and James are entertaining as hell in person, and they shared a lot of behind the scenes info about making the film. We seem to have Jenna Fischer to thank for the making of this movie: She is James Gunn's ex-wife and is responsible for reading the script and suggesting Rainn for the part of Frank. Ellen Page and Liv Tyler were the first choices for their roles. And good times--Kevin Bacon was not actually the first choice for his part. The actor originally slated for the role is the one who is prominent in the news lately for (among many things) his raging coke habit, porn stars, and batshit crazytalk. Needless to say, that went sour quickly and the film ended up with MMMmmm Bacon.

I feel misled. I just lost HOW many precious seconds of my life watching Dwight prance around in silly clothes hoping for some Sweet Fillion Goodness, only to get merely a fleeting glimpse of his partially obscured face? Cruel. So very cruel.

EHH. I feel like I saw it already. This is the kinda a fick you wait and stream on Netflix.

we do need more Sweet Fillion Goodness

I think at long last, Pajiba has finally found a truly and absolutely unflattering photo of Nathan Fillion. Bravo guys, well done.
