I Hope Mose Is In It

So the news is that the low budget super hero comedy Super, starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page, is getting picked up for wide distribution. Writer and director James Gunn had this to say about the deal:

Yes. SUPER will be released in at least 15 of the top 25 markets in the U.S. But we are going to meet the market’s demands. We are not going to make the mistakes many other R-rated superhero movies made, and try to appeal to everyone. As I say in the interview above, this is not a movie for everyone. It is for those of us who are a little off-center. Its violence and humor and tonal shifts are all purposefully jarring, so it’s for people with more extreme tastes. Right now we have a film made on a very limited budget, which can easily make its money back. So, although there will be a theatrical release, it will not be released into two thousand theaters across the country unless somehow the market demands it.

Heh. Yeah, all those “other R-rated superhero” movies … like, both of them.

Here’s the first clip released onto the interwebs from the movie:

Remember the whole thing where movies often seem to get released in pairs? Dante’s Peak and Volcano, Armageddon and Deep Impact, Tombstone and Wyatt Earp. Super feels just similar enough to Kick Ass to fall into the same category. It’s got that same superficial read of the normal dork with no superpowers putting on the mask. I think the difference is that where Kick Ass was very self-aware of its humor, Super seems to play more like a straight dark comedy. Gunn describes it on his blog as “a D.I.Y., low-fi, punk rock, fucked-up, funny film about violence and faith and God and morality.” He then adds “My fear all along is that someone would try and sell this as Blankman.”

What else? Oh, the promised topical and almost nude photo with Megan Fox.

“With” vs. “of.” Just when you stop paying attention to those prepositions, they jump up and bite you in the ass.

Re: Nude fake-out: SLW is a god.

As was James Gunn until Jenna Fischer dumped him. Poor guy. Still makes wonderfully weird and eccentric movies, though. Tromeo & Juliet, The Specials, Slither, the script for the Dawn of the Dead remake. I'll definitely see this. James Gunn is rad.

Wouldn't this sort of a a triplet and not a pair? There was Kick-Ass, Defendor and this one? I haven't seen Defendor or this movie, but they would seem like a closer pairing.

In any event, I will rent this. I like Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page and super heroes, so there is no downside for me on this one.

I didn't know this was James Gunn until now. I'll check it out. Slither was underrated as a motherfucker and I like the Dawn of the Dead remake more every time I watch it.

Would it be evil if I had sex with Ellen Page?

Hold up, I'll answer that for you.

Yes.

So evil.

So deliciously evil.
