Something Borrowed Trailer: Why Is Kate Hudson Ruining This Jim Halpert Reaction Shot Montage?

This summer, while superheroes and sequels will be whizzing through your local multiplexes with the hammer of Thor and the abs of The Green Lantern, the studios will be counter-programming with a series of movies targeted at the women they think would rather watch John Krasinski roll his eyes than James McAvoy double entendre his phallic symbol in X-Men: First Class. That’s where Something Borrowed comes in, a romantic comedy that stars Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin, Krasinski, and some guy I’ve never heard of as the male lead. But his name is Colin, and he’s American, and that’s never a good combination.

Based on an Emily Giffin novel, Something Borrowed is about a woman and a best friend and another woman and the man she loves who is marrying the first woman unless … you know what. It’s a variation of My Best Friend’s Wedding and let’s just leave it at that.

Wait, why isn't John Krasinski the lead? I don't understand.

Posted by: misselise at February 18, 2011 9:14 AM

That does not look completely horrible.

No, seriously. I'm completely serious and saying this with a straight face.
(I liked the little dance step the two of them did and also will Kate Hudson NEVER redeem herself?)

So she ends up with Krasinski right?

Oh wait did I ruin it?

Posted by: E-Money at February 18, 2011 9:27 AM

I've always avoided those Emily Giffin books because I thought they looked demeaning to women, but I've just added this movie to my Netflix queue. Gah.

I am sooooooo torn between being stupid excited for this (love love love the book) and kind of annoyed at the casting decisions. Kate Hudson!? ARE YOU SERIOUS????

Posted by: grace b at February 18, 2011 10:19 AM

If you didn't put up photos of Hudson I'd never be able to visualize her. She's just a blank space in my mind. But now, looking at her, she looks like ... I dunno, a poor man's Carrie Underwood or something.

Who cares about the story. Kate's going to get screwed over and Ginnifer's going to get everlasting happiness after learning to assert herself blahblahblah more importantly HOW CUTE IS GINNIFER'S HAIR?

Posted by: Kazza at February 18, 2011 10:39 AM

The combined cuteness of Krasinski and Goodwin is enough for me. ADORABLE OVERLOAD.

Posted by: Mel C. at February 18, 2011 10:42 AM

This new guy looks like a bland serial killer.

Posted by: headmonkeys at February 18, 2011 11:11 AM

Seriously? She wears glasses and has frumpy hair? That's what tyou're going with?

Fuck you in the butthole. I hate Kate Hudson so much it hurts. It HURTS.

Krasinski, you break my heart.

Posted by: Figgy at February 18, 2011 11:27 AM

Gah, this looks awful. It looks bland and unimaginative and I kept feeling like I've seen this movie a million times before. And WHY is Krasinski in some weird best friend confidante role?

I hate these movies where everyone is a huge ball of fucking indecision and timidity and oh no! We made a mistake! and just SHUT the fuck up and go for it.

I guess if they did, there wouldn't be a movie. THUS: don't go down this plot road, screenwriters. It's got deep ruts in it that are hundreds and hundreds of years old. Find a new road. Because I'm not watching your waste of time recycled-so-many-times-it's-like-the-ghost-of-a-movie crap.

And again: why does Krasinski have to be in this? Oh well, I didn't watch his flick with George Clooney and Miss Sucks On Lemons, either.

I'll just put Away We Go back in my queue.

Posted by: Snuggiepants at February 18, 2011 11:34 AM

Glad to see Figgy and I are of one mind on this. I suspected we would be. MY BOYFRIEND JOHN, WHO LOOKS LIKE A HANDSOME TALL MUPPET, DESERVES BETTER THAN THIS.

Posted by: Snuggiepants at February 18, 2011 11:34 AM

BACK OFF, SNUGGIE. KRASINSKI IS MINE. As soon as I get rid of that "wife" of his...

Posted by: Pinky McLadybits at February 18, 2011 11:55 AM

I can't even watch chick flick trailers without doing the JKras eye roll.

Posted by: Amanda at February 18, 2011 12:03 PM

JIM HALPERT AND HIS HAIR ARE TOO GOOD FOR THIS MOVIE.

He really does look like a muppet. An adorable muppet.

Posted by: Figgy at February 18, 2011 12:24 PM

While figgy, Pinky, and Snuggie are fighting it out, I'm going to sneak off with Krasinski all for myself.

Also, you guys sound like an adorable trio of dwarves.

Posted by: jM at February 18, 2011 12:49 PM

Killer dwarves, you mean.

Posted by: Stella at February 18, 2011 12:59 PM

Dammit, jM! BRING BACK THE KRASINSKI OR I RELEASE YOUR PANDA LOVE SLAVES!

Posted by: Pinky McLadybits at February 18, 2011 1:03 PM

I was gonna protest, but he probably is like 3 feet taller than me, so...yeah.

Posted by: Figgy at February 18, 2011 1:06 PM

jM - Question: muppet-dwarf love - worse, better, or about the same as furries?

Also, I'm sorry, but I'm a sucker for rom-coms and this one sucked me right in. I won't see it in the theatre, but you can be damn sure I'll rent it when it comes out.

Posted by: tamatha at February 18, 2011 1:13 PM

Also, also, the lead reminds me a bit of Joaquin Phoenix.

Posted by: tamatha at February 18, 2011 1:14 PM

I saw this movie at a Test Screening back in December. Legally, I am not allowed to tell you how absolutely terrible it is.

But it looks like Kate Hudson went back and re-shot some of her scenes, which is good, because her acting in the cut I saw was atrocious. Her acting in the trailer is only slightly painful.

Posted by: Vick at February 18, 2011 2:34 PM

I looked pretty frumpy in college, and like to think I've cleaned up some. Ok, I know I have...seriously, in college someone dressed up as me for Halloween by wearing a gigantically oversize sweatshirt and a scrunchee. (ouch. even looking back, ouch. she did not understand why I was unhappy.)

So...as much as I'd like to come down against the ponytail/glasses thing - I don't think it's too farfetched.

Kate Hudson is starting to show her age, though. Some forehead creasing. Must be all that time in the faux-sun.

So, I hate to admit this, but I've read the books. They are terrible, though if you're looking for a ridiculous girly book to take you away from reality, you could do worse.

SPOILER ALERT.

John Krasinski is in the movie because there is a second book where the best guy friend character gets together with the bitchy blonde while she learns Very Important Life Lessons like how not to be a bitch. So no, he doesn't get together with Ginnifer. She winds up stealing the fiancee from her best friend, but it's ok because the best friend totally deserves it because she was selfish in college.

So I'm guessing this means they will make the sequel...

Yeeeah, the books aren't bad for the chick lit that they are. I'll admit that I've read the series. Netflixing this.
I have to say my initial reaction was a shameful squeeeeee! and then - ugh Hudson.

Posted by: Be Chasing Drunken Monkeys at February 19, 2011 2:04 AM

I actually liked this book. Like a couple others have said, it was a decent fluff book. The rest of the series... not so much. I'll definitely watch this. What can I say? I'm a sucker for rom coms.

I can't wait for this movie - I've always loved the book and I think that this could be the best role for Kate Hudson since Almost Famous (and not just because the character has the same name as me!)

Also, really thought it was awesome that they used the song "Fireflies" by Search/Rescue in the first half of the trailer - hope they have more Search/Rescue in the movie, too. Does anybody know the song at the end of the trailer, though? Loved that as well but can't find it.
