Mark Antony Goes Van Helsing

We last checked in on James Purefoy and Solomon Kane when we only had a Russian language trailer to watch. Now we get it in English! Slashfilm found this neat little widget that not only has the trailer, but several other vignettes put together by the studio showcasing fight scenes, creatures, etc.

See here’s the problem with trailers … this doesn’t look at face value any different than a dozen other swords and monsters films, but little details that distinguish a good action film from a crappy one just get lost in the noise of a trailer. There seems to be some beautiful and creative creature design, but only flashes can be seen in the context of a trailer. We’ve got a dark and brooding hero hiding from a violent past, something beyond cliched at this point, but cliches get their start because they’ve worked so well when done right over the years. There’s a horrible pilgrim hat, but you’ve got to give some credit to the director basically saying “look I don’t care if Van Helsing wore a hat like that and sucked, the books say he wears this hat, so he’s bloody well wearing this hat.”

Plus, in Jame Purefoy they’ve got Mark Antony himself. I know Pullo is one career step from just playing “Thug #3” and Vorenus is on fricking “Grey’s Anatomy” but one of those badasses from “Rome” has to be able to translate to the big screen, right?

Well I think that it looks pretty damn good. True, it looks like many other sword and sorcery type movies but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The hat does make me crave oatmeal though.

Hmmmm....yeah, not really enough there to tell me anything other than that hat is...ummm, yeah.

Pullo can go Thug #3 on me ANYTIME!!!!

*sigh* I do miss Rome...

I kind of love how Solomon Kane looks like a Witch Hunter from Warhammer.

I am such a nerd.

I could hardly see anything, what with the darkness and the obligatory "flash of action lasting seven-tenths of a second" all trailers have these days. What I did see looked fairly dumb. Could still be good, though.

Hey Snath. Be wary. They don't take too kindly to nerds round these parts.

I've been here for years and they haven't killed me yet.

I'm bordering on interested and need a bit more to push it from "rentable" to "see it in theaters" for me.

Don't forget about rocking your peers and puttin' suckers in fear, Snath.

I watched it without sound, but it looks like fun. Maybe not theatre fun but definitely rent fun.

Saw a lot of clips for this at comic-con. Unfortunately, your assessment of this movie's potential cliche-crap factor is correct. I wouldn't even bother putting it into my netflix queue.

Is it the hat choices? or the actor. Why is Harrison Ford the only one to ever pull off the hat successfully?

Because he's Harrison Ford, durr.

Looks like a movie I wanted to make. Ah well, another look sample. "Look samples," in the pre-production parlance, refer to the movies you plan to rip off.

Film schooled, beyatches.

I know nothing about comic/book Soloman Kane, but I do know Conan and I do know James Purefoy (yummy) so sign me up!

I'm in. Looks fun. And I'm a fool for anything with Robert E. Howard's name on it.

Solomon Kane is an excellent movie within it's genre. I sure enjoyed it and James Purefoy delivers a great performance.
Not too many movies have been made in the sword slinging/fantasy genre and even fewer are actually really good, so this one received a warm welcome here.
