So Let's Kick, And Push, And Coast

Here’s the trailer for Skateland, which is another coming of age film set in the 80’s that feels suspiciously like Adventureland. It’s showing at a mess of film festivals this year, which means the film makers want you to ooh and aah at it, and yet, it just doesn’t… work for me.

It stars Ashley Greene, who I like for absolutely no valid reason, and Shiloh Fernandez, who I presume will not be raping zombies in this one. It’s also another production from MTV Films, which just increases my skepticism. And the synopsis… well, see for yourselves:

“Skateland explores the rupture of charismatic Ritchie Wheeler, brother and sister Brent and Michelle Burkham, and wise-cracking lady-killer Kenny Crawford’s seemingly complacent existence as they struggle with the collapse of their tumultuous home lives, the alcohol-induced idling of reckless adolescence, and the wane of their hometown hangout, the local roller rink. A story syncopated with moments of violent turbulence, of heartbreak and of new beginnings, Skateland immerses the audience in the brutal, but beautiful vastness of East Texas blue skies and the emotional claustrophobia of the bible belt. Enveloped by the brooding melodies and incendiary rock riffs of the early 80’s, Skateland is a place where aging values wrestle with contemporary pop culture to create a paradoxical balance between old and new.”

OK, I mean, I guess. It’s a little too impressed with itself. But the trailer looks like it might have some good moments in it, it’s just that the whole doesn’t feel particularly compelling. Anyway, watch and see:

Whaddaya think?

who I like for absolutely no valid reason

They're called boobs. And because she's the better looking version of Kristen Stewart.

Huh. Yeah, I guess that sums it up rather succinctly. -TK

For me, it felt like Adventureland crossed with Dazed and Confused. So, yeah, I'll probably wind up Netflixing it.

Why are you intent on bringing out my self-loathing today, TK? What is that ABOUT?

What can I say. It's a gift. -TK

Ashley Greene is purty. That's a pretty valid reason, I think.

It's reminiscent of a dozen other coming-of-age movies and it doesn't seem this one has the sort of script to make it stand out.

That said, I like the use of 40 Day Dream by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

Even as a child of the 80's that holds no interest for me at all.

Best part of this is Lupe tagline. That is all.

I will totally see this.

Seriously, I'm a sucker for these types of movies.

The girl in the header looks like Jenna Haze from that angle.

Ugh. No.

I loathe self-indulgent coming of age crap.

It seems like a coming of age about outsiders that wasn't written by an outsider and certainly doesn't seem to have cast people who look like outsiders. It' like the Gossip Girl of 80's coming of age films...

I haven't even seen the trailer yet and it feels like it's trying to make "fetch" happen.

"Fetch" is NEVER gonna happen, Skateland!

No. Looks insufferable.

Also, am I the only one who hated Adventureland?
