Gentleman, Welcome to Shutter Island

Leonardo DiCaprio.jpg

I didn’t even realize that Scorsese was far enough along on Shutter Island to have a trailer already, but here it is. And it’s much less Goodfellas / The Departed Scorsese, and far more Cape Fear Scorsese.

Also, it’s creepy.

Based on a Dennis Lehane novel, Shutter Island is set in 1954, where a U.S. Marshall (Leonardo DiCaprio) is investigating the disappearance of a murderess institutionalized in a remote hospital for the criminally insane, which — of course — gives Scorsese plenty of opportunities to present criminally insane folks. And you can bet your ass Jackie Earle Haley shows up. As does Patricia Clarkson, Michelle Williams, and Mark Ruffalo.

There’s few mystery writers better than Lehane; combine that with Scorsese and an exceptionally capable DiCaprio, and … it looks like a killer thriller.

Jesus, that gave me chills.

It looks great. Although he is very good, I still find it a bit hard getting over Di Caprio though. For me he's forever that guy in Titanic! Does this happen to you with other characters that you find them so attached to one film you find it hard to fathom s/he is in another one with a different character?

Posted by: barf at June 11, 2009 10:36 AM

I used to feel that way about DiCaprio, barf, until I saw him in The Departed. I now think of him less as a play-acting pretty boy and more as a capable, convincing actor.

Posted by: Kolby at June 11, 2009 10:39 AM

The problem I have with DeCaprio is that I can't believe he is a day over 22. That being said, this looks excellent. I think the thriller genre is one that doesn't get done enough. By the same token it usually isn't done very well so maybe that is a good thing.

Posted by: admin at June 11, 2009 10:39 AM

I was like that with DiCaprio until I saw 'The Aviator'.

Posted by: Spender at June 11, 2009 10:41 AM

I didn't even know this was in the works... but it's a Thursday surprise I'll take

Posted by: soto at June 11, 2009 10:41 AM

i had to cut off before the 1:30 mark, it started to feel like they were going to tell the whole story and i really want this to awe me.

damn trailer makers!
you had me at
"mental hospital....for the criminally insane."

Posted by: gp at June 11, 2009 10:45 AM

If you haven't read the book yet, do yourself a favor and wait until AFTER you see the movie. Trust me on this one...

Posted by: Melissa at June 11, 2009 10:49 AM

Shit. Yes.

Posted by: boo at June 11, 2009 10:49 AM

That was awesome... yet another movie (however) that I will have to wait until it comes out on DVD. Damn baby!

Posted by: legib at June 11, 2009 10:51 AM

Eeeek! I love me some Leo. I think he's had a very interesting career. And the fact that he hooked up with Scorcese makes him the luckiest dog.

Also, I was never tarnished by his role in Titanic. I never saw the movie.

Posted by: Kelly Booth at June 11, 2009 10:52 AM

I love mental institution stories. And Mark Ruffalo. And Michelle Williams. And Patricia Clarkson.

And yes, I'll begrudgingly admit I still harbor my schoolgirl crush on DiCaprio.

I'll die behind the chemical shed now, thankyouverymuch.

Posted by: boo at June 11, 2009 10:53 AM

Wow, the trailer makes it look great. But having read the book I have little expectations about the final product.

The ending is very M. Night Shyamalan. Convoluted and a huge shit over the rest of the book.

Posted by: Gez27 at June 11, 2009 10:54 AM

ooo...i'm intrigued, but i'm not going to watch the trailer-i like to see things totally fresh. sounds super promising tho! thrillers are my favorite.

Posted by: gem at June 11, 2009 10:58 AM

This will have me in the theater opening day for sure. Martin Scorcese, Ben Kingsley and DiCaprio - can't get much better than that.

I still can't believe Leo wasn't nominated for Revolutionary Road; he's terribly underrated. (I do think his boyish look somehow contributes.)

Posted by: Cindy at June 11, 2009 10:59 AM

Max Von Sydow is in this? Where do I sign!

Posted by: eddie at June 11, 2009 11:29 AM

Remember when Leonardo Di Caprio wasn't Martin Scorcese's muse? Me too, that was back when Scorcese's films didn't suck.

Seriously, the only palatable role Di Caprio has ever had is when he played a very believable retard on What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

Posted by: Darcy at June 11, 2009 11:52 AM

i don't get it. everyone and every site is talking about the trailer and everyone and every site is talking about the cast, but no one's mentioning max von fucking sydow?!?! fer chrissakes, people!!

Posted by: dan at June 11, 2009 12:02 PM

Seriously, the only palatable role Di Caprio has ever had is when he played a very believable retard on What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

Isn't that what he plays in every movie?

Posted by: Codeman at June 11, 2009 12:46 PM

Wow, DiCaprio? Really? It's been some time since I've read this book, but I never pictured the main character as a pretty boy.

Posted by: Agent Scully at June 11, 2009 12:55 PM

I didn't even know that von Sydow was still alive.

Posted by: FabMax at June 11, 2009 1:22 PM

This trailer made my brain fall out of my asshole when I first saw the trailer this morning. Seriously, it's just that potently mind-blowing.

Also, it's completely unfair that, even with Scorsese's undeniable talent and reputation, any person should be allowed to assemble such a perfect cast. Is he deliberately trying to destroy us by crafting the most bitchin' movie ever?

I think so.

Posted by: benjamin at June 11, 2009 1:30 PM

It looks...good....but I'm honestly just tired of these directors who refuse to work with other actors who aren't their favorite darling pets. Tim Burton, Ridley Scott, Scorcese, etc. It gets tiring and badly repetitive.

Posted by: figgy at June 11, 2009 2:05 PM

But figgy, doesn't it seem like the great directors in history have always had their favorites? It is a time-worn tradition for a reason. It rarely seems tiring or repetitive to me.

Posted by: ed newman at June 11, 2009 2:28 PM

It looks like it could be a really good thriller. I especially like Patricia Clarkson and Michelle Williams but I wish they'd cast Matt Damon - For me he is the better looking and better actor of the two, and yet they seem to be interchangeable in the types of movie roles they play.

Posted by: midfan at June 11, 2009 2:44 PM

Oh, hell yes! I haven't seen Max von Sydow in a mental hospital loony bin since the heady days of Strange Brew. But this one looks like it takes the atmosphere of Silence of the Lambs and a twist of Gothika, with a heaping side order of awesome and throws it all together with unmistakable talent.

I sure hope it doesn't suck though.

Was this posted because of my email to you, Dustin? Just curious if I actually contributed something to Pajiba to justify all the lurking I do around here.

Good call GP on not finishing the trailer. I read the book and this trailer is a bit spoiler-y. That being said, I think this movie kind of looks like ass, as it seems to stick the melodramatic twistiness of Lehane's novel. I'll prob see this anyway for Scorscese/DiCaprio/Kingsley. Although I feel like Peter Stormare or Brad Dourif need to be in this somewhere for full whacko effect.

Posted by: stryker1121 at June 11, 2009 6:12 PM

My heart swells..it just swells!
Say what you will about DiCaprio, he's had me since This Boy's Life and such I'm loyal little bugger.

That having been said, I have this strange (very illogical) dislike of Michelle Williams' acting, it might have to do with her breathy way of speaking..as if she's just run a few laps before shooting a scene.

Posted by: Mona at June 11, 2009 8:20 PM

That scared me so much I had to hurry up and watch the 500 Days of Summer trailer right after.

Posted by: Austin asking for trouble at June 12, 2009 1:03 AM

I like Matt Damon, but his depth as an actor doesn't come close to Dicaprio.

Posted by: Melissa at June 12, 2009 11:27 AM

That was terrifying, but I'm afraid it's going to end up like A Beautiful Mind when it's discovered that Russell Crowe is actually insane and not as brilliant as we thought.

I hope I'm wrong.
