The Sherlock Holmes Trailer

And alas, the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, though the movie doesn’t come out until Christmas. The tone isn’t exactly what I was expecting — it’s breezily dark, if you will. Sort of Guy Ritchie’s style mixed with the tone of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The costumes and settings are period, but the look and feel certainly is not (Sherlock Homes and slo-mo? Who’d have thought). It’s also more comic than I was expecting, which has to put a little damper on the Will Ferrell/Sacha Baron Cohen version of Sherlock Holmes.

Still: Robert Downey, Jr. looks and sounds great, even if it’s not the Sherlock Holmes you might be accustomed to (he’s kind of a cad). Rachel McAdams suits the part, though Jude Law seems a little off. It’s probably the authentic English accent — so troublesome. It’s going to be PG-13, and it’s going to be slightly family friendly, but all things considered: I’m stoked, even if it is completely bastardized.

oh this is going to be a FUN movie!

Posted by: Stella at May 19, 2009 9:51 AM

yeah, that looks pretty badass, even if it isn't going to be R. awesome.

Posted by: lizzieborden at May 19, 2009 9:52 AM

Well, that'll do.

It seems to have caught a case of Zack Snyder syndrome though. (SLOOOOOOW MOOOOTIONNNN!!!!)

Posted by: twig at May 19, 2009 9:54 AM

Madam, I got the key to YOUR "release" right here...amirite?

Posted by: southwer at May 19, 2009 9:57 AM

That looks entertaining as all hell! I think I may just start smoking a pipe and saying "mmmmmm quite" as an answer to everything.

Posted by: admin at May 19, 2009 9:57 AM

I'll work with it. Definitely NOT what I expected, but hey expect the unexpected!

Posted by: Four Eyes at May 19, 2009 10:01 AM

I see nothing "off" about Jude, and I think he and RDJ will have a great rapport. I'm psyched for this one.

*blink*

So, at what point in the movie does the giant metal spider show up?

Posted by: Jim Doggie at May 19, 2009 10:16 AM

I like Holmes as a cad. I'd rather a wacky eccentric Holmes than the Victorian Spock he's often made out to be. In the books he was a bit of a bad ass as well-there were always hints that he was much stronger than was apparent. Maybe any differences will be explained by time travel-just to piss off BSlim.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at May 19, 2009 10:20 AM

Third act.

Posted by: twig at May 19, 2009 10:20 AM

twig, when the giant metal spider does show up, wanna go get a beer to celebrate the death of original thought?

Posted by: Jim Doggie at May 19, 2009 10:27 AM

RDJ looks relentlessly charming in this. The hammer thing was pretty funny.
I second the fact that there was nothing amiss about Jude Law in this. Dustin, are you refusing to accept him for fear that he may gain favor over RR in your fantasies? Fair enough.

Jim

Let me recover from the massive blackout drunk I need to have over the current 25% rating for Terminator: Salvation on Rotten Tomatoes, and I'll get back to you.

Posted by: twig at May 19, 2009 10:33 AM

i know what i'm getting for xmas.

Posted by: gp at May 19, 2009 10:37 AM

Luckily, I did not have any specific expectations, so I have nothing about which to be disappointed. (It helps not to have read any of the books. Hmm, perhaps I should add those to the ever-increasing reading list?) I think this looks fun, but I agree the slow-mo is just too much.

Posted by: tamatha at May 19, 2009 10:37 AM

You sure Joel Schumacher ain't pinch hitting for Guy Ritchie in the director's seat?

I could swear that RDJ has acquired SBNIS (Sudden Bat Nipple Implant Syndrome).

Posted by: agent bedhead at May 19, 2009 10:43 AM

Tamatha

The late, great Jeremy Brett plays a fantastic Sherlock Holmes. Available on DVD.

Posted by: twig at May 19, 2009 10:45 AM

I guess it looks pretty good, but ohmygodrobertdowneyjrhandcuffednakedtothebedohmygodyay!

...I'll be in my bunk.

Posted by: Jeremy Feist at May 19, 2009 10:51 AM

No! No! No! I've been chomping at the bit to see this trailer since the first pictures of this movie started coming out. I'm so utterly disappointed.

Praying that most of that cheese is just lame trailer editing, but it's got a wink, nudge style that looks influenced by the Pirates of the Carribean tongue in cheek calamity and hijinx.

I could see this really turning out to be a disaster.

Posted by: Brian at May 19, 2009 10:53 AM

I will tolerate any and all haters in this thread because you cannot weaken, much less destroy my man-love for RDJ or the legendary Mr. Holmes.
Say what you will about special effects and slo-mo, criticize the dearth of originality in Hollywood and call me an idiot if you will but you will not deter me in the least from looking forward to this movie.

Besides, if they brought Basil Rathbone back from the dead (Oooooh...ZOMBIE Holmes!) and did a frame by frame remake of "Hound of the Baskervilles" you'd all be bitching about how "static and talky and snooze-worthy" it is. Plah!

Bring it, Guy Ritchie!

Posted by: Spender at May 19, 2009 10:57 AM

Thanks Twig, I'll try to keep that in mind, though I suspect that for proper enjoyment of the RDJ Sherlock Holmes, I should wait to see Jeremy Brett's version after.

Posted by: tamatha at May 19, 2009 11:04 AM

I have faith in the cast, but not in the director. I'm worried here.

Posted by: Jerce at May 19, 2009 11:22 AM

Admin - I encourage you to do that.

Wheee! That's my first reaction to the trailer. The second is, my, what a big pillow you have, RDJ!

Posted by: Melissa at May 19, 2009 11:25 AM

squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Posted by: dammitjanet at May 19, 2009 11:29 AM

Jerce, I'm with you on having more hopes for the cast than the director. But who knows? Maybe the apparent cheese is just crappy trailer editing. Mr. Ritchie can still knock'em out of the park now and then. Shame the "when" part is so tough to predict. On the flip side, it's easy for me (*cough*-acting whore-*cough*) to forgive mediocre directing when the cast is strong.

Speaking of: MarkStrongMarkStrongMarkStrong!!! I had no idea he was in this. And co-starring with RDJ no less? Suddenly I'm hot, bothered, and all a'twitterpated with a case of the lusty vapors.

Posted by: Shinykate at May 19, 2009 11:34 AM

Meh.

That is all.

Posted by: jpguy13 at May 19, 2009 11:34 AM

I was excited until the trailer. Same old jokey, Matrix-style editing bull crap. And yeah, there probably will be a giant mechanical spider.

Posted by: Andrew at May 19, 2009 12:39 PM

Ooh. Hopes teetering on the brink, could go up... could go down. Tongue-in-cheek level is worryingly high, but casting is shockingly good. Further details TBA.

Posted by: Anne (in Reno) at May 19, 2009 12:47 PM

Damn that film looks like fun. OH GOD... RDJ's face at about 1:25 ish. I'll be in my bunk...

Posted by: Gumble at May 19, 2009 12:50 PM

As much as I love me some RDJ, I thought Mark Strong looked more like Holmes in this movie. This movie just looks like every other movie that's been out recently. It's got that "ought's style" that I'm finding rather tedious.

Conan Doyle wrote, what? 150 Sherlock Holmes stories? Couldn't they have picked one and done it RIGHT? Then they'd have 149 sequels to do. Oh wait, never mind. Jeremy Brett already did them all and did them right.

Posted by: BWeaves at May 19, 2009 1:22 PM

That's way too much sloooooooooooomoooooooooo for one movie.

This looks a lot sillier than I thought it'd be, but it looks like RDJ and Law have a lot of chemistry, so it should be fun to watch.

Posted by: figgy at May 19, 2009 1:58 PM

It seems a little Odd Couple-ish and fucking awesome.

Posted by: JapJay at May 19, 2009 3:59 PM

One word: cheeky.

Mmmmmmmm, Mark Strong...

Posted by: Monica at May 19, 2009 4:27 PM

Does he, you know, solve shit though?

Posted by: Jay at May 19, 2009 5:02 PM

I think the character of Sherlock Holmes has been around long enough that he's pretty malleable. Get the basics right and you can do whatever you want with the character. And I LIKE the stories, I just don't think movie versions always have to be "canon".

But it may be my blind, unreasonable love for RDJ speaking.

Posted by: Sarah at May 19, 2009 5:09 PM

What?? Jude Law as Watson? Where's Moriarty?? As a Sherlock Holmes fan and purist, I highly object to the Hollywoodization of this, RDJ or not.

Posted by: Bonnie at May 19, 2009 5:45 PM

This looks fun! but nothing to do with the 'real' Holmes. More like 'based on a character by Arthur Conan Doyle'.

Re reading the stories, they are all on project Gutenberg and each story is pretty short. Perfect for breaks

Posted by: ChrisD at May 19, 2009 7:05 PM

I agree with Sarah, the basics are there, you just have to build on them.

I will be waiting impatiently for this. Why do you tease me with trailers so soon?

Posted by: Eyvi at May 19, 2009 7:42 PM

You know, Guy Ritchie movies are a funny thing to me; I like them, and then I kind of don't, and then I like them again, and then I hate them.

He's rarely consistent in my eyes, so I'm not sure what to take away from this. Make no mistake, I will go see it, if only because the insanely beautiful and talented Kelly Reilly has a role. But I will reserve judgement until then.

I still consider "Without A Clue" to be the most underrated Sherlock Holmes film of all time. Brilliant comedy.

Posted by: Sarah at May 19, 2009 10:00 PM

so...much...pretty...

It is Christmas yet?

Posted by: rach at May 19, 2009 10:35 PM

Oh good grief. An action-comedy bromance? Sherlock Holmes tackles men rising from the dead? People flying out of beds? Large, burly men with hammers? Scantily clad women kneeing him in the groin and cuffing him to a bed? Explosions?! STEALING WATSON'S CLOTHES?!

Ugh. Sir Arthur is surely rolling in his grave.

I hate this era.

Posted by: vic at May 19, 2009 11:48 PM

I want to be friends with Rachel McAdams. I want to rent videos with her.

Posted by: Lucas at May 20, 2009 2:01 AM

I can definitely go for this, particularly because it won't intersect in any way with Jeremy Brett and that fantastic series. I can treasure one while enjoying this as a completely separate experience. And, frankly, RDJ can do little wrong these days. He's consistently interesting to watch.

Posted by: Louise at May 20, 2009 3:02 AM

I agree with vic. This looks fucking terrible, but everyone here is so busy tonguing Downey's arsehole they can't see that Hollywood has once again shat on something that had both substance and integrity and made something that has neither so that they can give trendy-actor-of-the-week Downey his Jack Sparrow moment and hopefully rake in the cash. I wouldn't mind so much if they hadn't slapped the name Sherlock Holmes all over it when it clearly has fuck-all to do with Sherlock Holmes.

Posted by: freddie at May 20, 2009 7:41 AM

8D look at all the eyecandy! I'll be in my bunk.

Scantly Costumed Amy Adams?!! Sold!

Posted by: yocean at May 24, 2009 6:17 PM

I meant McAdams. Her scarlet undergarment/corset looking thingy flaunting all her deliciousness has addled my brain.

That aside: yes it looks awesome. Again, sold!
