Seventh One's the Charm: New Game of Thrones Trailer

HBO is really working us into a fevered lather over this “Game of Thrones” series. I stopped counting at some point, but between trailers and teasers and behind the scenes featurettes, I think there’s something close to an hour of footage up here in our archives at this point. Today’s entrant? The geography of Westeros. If the next one is the mathematics of Westeros, I’ll start to suspect that this is disguised educational television. I’d not be upset at the education, but the deception, I watch PBS for fun after all.

So we don’t see too much new here, but the organization of it allows us to get a clearer idea of what we’re seeing. It all jumbles together in a trailer or even a behind the scenes thing, but this has got the organization of a power point. Now we’re looking at Winterfell. Check. Now we’re looking at King’s Landing. Check. I felt like taking notes, but in a good way.

The only real complaint is that it’s not April 17th yet. We’re thirsty, they’ve got a bucket of water, but they’re only giving us a teaspoon at a time. Have you seen fantasy nerds riot? It’s not pretty. And neither is the riot.

Been reading the series as a way to gear up on the show. I'm extremely impressed in how serious and adult Martin makes his characters, even the children are not allowed the flights of fancy that children are normally allowed.

Part of me continues to wonder how long this show will last. HBO is not know for keeping expensive properties going -- see "Deadwood" and "Rome". And for this show to work, everything has to feel real and honest and not like some backstage lot with cheap CGI.

Oh crap...is that a third horn blast in the distance?

Well if HBO doesn't want to keep it going past 4 seasons, they can always bank on Martin dying before he finishes the last books. WHICH HE WILL. Stop doing interviews, stop going on vacation and WRITE SOME ADDICTIVE BOOKS.

With that out of the way...I AM SO UNBELIEVABLY EXCITED.

I've never been more excited about the debut of any television show ever.

e-money >> Martin just got married. Studies show that's a life extender, right?

Everything I've seen has looked fantastic at this point. Very excited. I might even get HBO for the first time in about 5 years just to re-watch some of the episodes.

Eeeeeeeeeeeee. That is all.

If you are looking for something nerdy to fill your time until April 17th, I highly, highly, highly recommend reading The Name of the Wind. It's the first book in a trilogy and the second is due March 1 (you hear that, George?!!) It is a very close second to ASOIAF.

Valar Morghulis.

"Martin just got married. Studies show that's a life extender, right?"

Not if he married somebody called Peterson

I just Jizzed in my pants!
Oh and if ur looking for adult fantasy in the same vein as A song of Ice and Fire, I recommend The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. Fucking brilliant and it has the added benefit of being finished.
Also There is Steven Eriksons equally epic in scale and grandeur Malazan Book of the Fallen 10 book series, which has just finished.
You will not be disappointed in either.

Color me excited. I love these books so hard, and it looks like they are nailing it. I can't help but blow a very tired horn though. The show is going to catch up with the books before the series is finished. Hell, if he keeps writing at the pace he has been they could do it a full five years before the final book comes out. I don't mean to be a whiny fan, I bitch because I care.

I started reading the first book last week and now I am 400 pages in. I highly recommend to anyone teetering on the fence or should I say the wall to check the books out.

Rome was the most expensive series HBO ever took on and from the looks of Boardwalk Empire, it doesn't look like they are cutting back - which thankfully has won some serious awards. Let's just hope they score some big ratings to ensure its return.

Especially if there are folks like forbiddendonut who subscribe to HBO specifically for Game of Thrones. Make sure you tell them your reason for ordering it.

I have already started planning the viewing parties at my friends house. He has a beamer. I don't care if he wants to watch or not. I'll just show up and hijack the damn thing!

What Scully said, and also I'd like to add that the phenomenally awesome author of the book (by the name of Patrick Rothfuss) just released an open letter to Nathan Fillion, telling him that he'd like to help him in his plan to buy Firefly back from FOX.

Some authors of books really try to make this world a better place.

Others just get married, put off their fans for half a decade and then try to make amends by helping produce a TV show that will obviously be as awesome as incomplete. Great, now I'm excited AND angry.

I third Scully's nomination of The Name of the Wind. Kvothe is everything that Rand al'Thor wishes he could be. He also has awesomer, redder hair.

Oh, and I second supafly, too. Joe Abercrombie's trilogy (plus prequel) is extraordinary. One has to be realistic about these things.

And I can recommend "The Lies of Locke Lamora" - funny, tragic, brutal, real and really entertaining. The catch is, it ain't finished either. But whatever, it's not like that would keep people from reading it.

looking forward to this and it sure looks like they have done it right. would love to know how the whole story turns out though. i'm hoping the hbo series takes off and finishes the story since it certainly appears as if martin won't

Malazan felt like if Martin had rushed his books, and sacrificed emotional complexity in exchange for a shitload of characters and battles and details. It wasn't bad, but by the 4th book I just didn't want to keep track of all these people, I didn't care enough.
