Come To Me, Nerdlingers, And Let Us Plan Our Takeover

I’m probably WAY more excited about this than I should be, and if you listen closely, you can actually hear Mrs. TK rolling her eyes. But goddamn if this trailer for the documentary Secret Origin: The Story Of DC Comics doesn’t look fantastic. Comic books have an amazing history, and DC, being one of the oldest companies around, is particularly so. While they may not be the juggernaut they once were, there’s no denying that in addition to creating what are unquestionably the two most iconic and well-known characters of all time — Superman and Batman — there’s likely a hell of a story to tell.

Given that 2010 is the 75th anniversary of the company, DC (derived from the Detective Comics series way back when) has pulled out all the stops for the film. It’s narrated by the Green Lantern himself, Ryan Reynolds, who through being a hit at Comic Con and completely fucking adorable with children, appears determined to establish his geek cred.

Even better, it’s directed by Jeffrey Blitz, who helmed the riveting Spellbound, and despite the presence of too much of The Trailer Voice in the trailer, it seems like he’s intent on creating something special that will hopefully appeal to more than the hardcore comic book purveyors. Besides, if the guy can make a documentary about spelling bees interesting, well, let’s just say this should be a slam dunk.

Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics will be released on DVD on November 9th, and you can bet your goddamn Batman underoos that I’ll be watching and reviewing it.

75 years? damn. i can't believe i've been a fan for more than half of its existence. god i'm old

I'm interested... not so much excited, but certainly interested.

So was Ryan Reynolds ever into comics, or is he trying to establish cred because he now makes boatloads of cash thanks to comic book movies and it's really just about marketing?

Maybe now I'll find out who thought that putting a 14-year-old boy in pixie boots and hot pants was a good idea.

I just got home from Scott Pilgrim. That movie blows the hype out of the water. Seriously, the best movie I've seen in years and the first one in my memory that hasn't disappointed me. See it immediately!

I was a much bigger comic book geek when I was younger, prior to the advent of 8-bit home video game systems (Oh, Atari Stella, how I still love thee) but if this is anywhere near as interesting as Once Upon Atari, then I'll be all over this.

Always been more Marvel guy myself but have to respect the greats. Will see this.

Posted by: OlorinGrayhame at August 12, 2010 9:59 AM

For Jeffrey Blitz: Hell, I'll even see this.

I was a DC girl growing up, so of course I have to see this. Plus, bonus Gaiman!

Hate hearing, "DC Comics." Don't you understand people? You're saying "Detective Comics Comics." Its the same thing as when you go to the "ATM Machine." The "m" already stands for "machine!" It isn't an "Automated Teller Machine Machine" is it? NO! And it isn't "Detective Comics Comics" either.

So yeah, I won't be seeing this obnoxiously titled movie.

Now you'll excuse me while I enjoy my bucket of KFC's Kentucky fried chicken.

Hey, what da fuck you talkin' about, talkin' about?

Posted by: Tommy Two-Times at August 12, 2010 1:26 PM

In what HAS to be one of the signs of the nerdpocolypse, I have to agree with Sinestro.

Yes, you heard right.

I'm sadly aware of the fact that the ACTUAL name of the company reads as "Detective Comics Comics". That's why I refer to them only as DC. 'Cause that's how I roll.

Hey Thaal, don't choke on that KFC Kentucky Fried Chicken, 'kay? (see what I did there?)

As far as the "Secret Origins" project itself? Pft...I'm THERE, dude. THERE.

looks like they're going into some of the imprints too, or at least Vertigo because Vertigo is supposed to be classy. Will we get some Wildstorm shenanigans, I wonder?

Posted by: nigeltde at August 12, 2010 10:04 PM

Be interesting to hear about the company's treatment of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman.

It'll also be interesting to see if they tell about how Bill Finger really created "Batman" and that Bob Kane stole all the credit.
