Polanski, AlabamaPink, And a Few Other Site Notes

I’ve tried, for the most part, to avoid the Polanski flap, although I did a really poor job of it last week, when — as expected — the Polanski post turned ugly in the comments. At least, for the most part, it was thoughtful and intelligent ugliness. But man alive: People take their director rapists seriously — and who can blame them? I’m going to leave the issue alone after this post, but a reader has started a Facebook group, which is essentially a Petition to Rescind the Polanski Rape Apology.

It’s a Facebook group, so who knows if anyone will listen. Or care. But I do. And I thought that the essay in the group was well-written and, from where I stand anyway, spot on. Here’s a taste:

What I cannot understand is taking an active part in seeking to hold this man above the law and unaccountable for his actions. The community defined by the combination of riches, talent, and fame are notorious in the first place for getting away with crimes that normal people go to jail for — there has been a recent trend of starlets spending a day in jail where a normal person would have spent far longer. There is a supreme lack of self-awareness in signing a position whose purpose is to let another artist get away with a crime. It’s bad enough when a starlet gets away with drunk driving — what these people on the petition are up in arms about is the fact that a man is not getting away with rape. That makes this petition no more or less than a dressed up rape apology.

If you feel similarly, join the Facebook group. It can’t hurt anything, right?

And if you need a little inner rage to prompt action, check out the new trailer for Saw VI. That’s 6, for those unfamiliar with Roman Numerals. Six goddamn Saw movies. Six Halloweens in a row that we’ve been subject to these motherfucking movies. Can someone also start a petition to encourage people not to see these movies, so that we might get something else over a Halloween weekend that is otherwise dominated by Saw every stupid year?

And finally: A site note. And God this sucks to write. I absolutely do not want to be the asshole, but here’s the deal. Pajiba, at least in my mind, is a very different kind of site than other movie blogs. It’s more communal. It feel familial, in a way. People I’ve never met or talked to often send emails that are written as if we’ve known each other for years. And in a way, we have. I love that about the site. It’s fantastic, and I hope it stays that way no matter how big a site we may become in the future.

However — and damn this sucks — the charity marathons, and walks, and runs. I applaud the hell out of all of you who participate in these, who contribute money to them, and who show up to root on friends and family who run/walk in them. It’s amazing, and there are even those on staff who participate — I know TK is involved in a big bike race for charity. However, and especially of late (probably because it’s Breast Cancer Awareness month), we have been inundated with requests to link to readers’ donation pages. Because of both our liberal guilt and our desire not to let any of our readers down, we’ve occasionally linked to the donation pages in Pajiba Love.

However — with our extreme apologies — we can’t do it anymore. There are too many requests, and when/if we do link, and the plugs don’t convert into large donations, we feel even more guilty than we would if we hadn’t added the links in the first place — it’s the false hope of Pajiba effect. In short, it’s an uncomfortable position for us. We really want to do good, and to use Pajiba for good, but if we continue to link out to other donation pages, then our readers are either going to be tapped out or charity-blind. And to be honest, we want to save up our goodwill, so that maybe we can hit you guys up once a year or so for our one Pajiba cause — Lil A.

For instance, on November 16th, we are tentatively planning another Paheeba Day, in honor again of AlabamaPink. And on that day, all advertising revenue we earn will be donated to Lil A’s college fund, which is to say: We’re not asking you for money, but it’d be damn nice if you pad special attention to our many, many advertisers on that day.

Anyway, I apologize to those who, in the future, plan to hit us up for donation links. Unfortunately, we’re simply not going to be able to do it anymore.

Finally, don’t forget, folks: The Pajiba Movie Club returns tomorrow at 3 pm EST, with Night of the Living Dead. We look forward to your participation.

God dammit I forgot that tomorrow was movie club day! Must find DVD!

Also, I completely understand the issue you face with charities, donations and links. It's not a easy thing to do but if you do one you have to do them all.

Tough choice but it had to be done. Also, it's an incredible idea to give the advertising revenue from that day to the charity rather than trying to get people to give cash. I can't imagine I'm the only Pajiban with no money and tons of free time. I'll definitely be clicking my share of ads when the Godtopussy takes over.

I can appreciate the difficult position these put you in. I would love it if someone could organize a "Good Causes Links" maybe once a month, as a bonus Pajiba Love, but I could see how even that could be emotionally taxing. Just something to ponder. And I send hugs and prayers to Lil A for his education.

Makes sense to me, Dustin. And I think that's great about the donations to Lil A. I hope he and his dad have been doing okay... I think all of us still miss Pink very much, so it will be wonderful to be able to do something for her little guy. I'll be happy to check out all the ads on Paheeba Day!

*stands up, slow clapping*

Bravo, sirs. Bravo.

So what do I do? Do I click on the ads? Flash the computer my tits? Give up my FF adblocker for a day? I just wanna know if I have to physically interact with the ads in order to get you some money, or if observing them is enough.

Also, I haven't seen Mr. Pink post recently . . . I hope he's doing okay. I'm sending thought cookies.

I understand completely. I ran Race for the Cure too, and if it had occured to me first I might have asked, but once I saw that someone already had, I knew the position it would put you and the site and the readers in if more people did, so I can completely appreciate what you have to do. Might I suggest that this is something people can take to the Facebook community?

Posted by: Eep at October 5, 2009 12:03 PM

That is a hard choice - but I get it. I haven't got two nickles to rub together so I always feel really ashamed I can't donate...I try to do other things but a fool picture isn't going to buy any MRI time, now is it?

I wanted to suggest that Pajiba may not be the place for it, but your facebook type site is perfect for such things. It's still free to join up there, and the Pajiba fan page and group list is pretty extensive. You can always post some info on that page to a charity fundraising page perhaps, or utilize the whole social networking thing in creative ways there.

I'm super excited about Pajeeba Day! It's one of those awesome examples of how the crew here like their readers. There's some cool things afoot!

Pajibettes are casting spells and making moon covens and shit. There are such good ideas flying around for Paheeba day, it's gonna be AWESOME.

And good on you, Dustin, for the Lil A donation plan. It's perfect.

We had to do this at work, too and it made me sad & I felt like a jerk, but it had to be done. Too many people and too many worthwhile charities. Pretty soon, people become desensitized or feel like they're being shaken down for money on a daily basis.

However, I hope people will still talk about the wonderful, charitable things they're doing! It makes me happy to know that so many in our community are doing things to improve the lives of others. If Pajiba itself isn't the appropriate place to mention it, I hope people will venture over to the Facebook group to talk about their projects!

I think it's completely understandable that Pajiba can't be put in a position of having to pick and choose members' causes, and as others have pointed out, it can all become excessive. I'm thrilled though, that we can all be part of personally helping someone who is a part of the Pajiba family (Lil A).

"And on that day, all advertising revenue we earn will be donated to Lil A’s college fund"

Love it. And I apologize for any inundating I may have been responsible for in the past! No harm meant, and I third or forth the suggestion that charitable plugs get re-routed to the Facebook page (or maybe get a sub-page, like "Pajiba Does Good" group).

Keep on keepin' on, ya'll.

Posted by: Tammy at October 5, 2009 1:13 PM

Completely reasonable. I agree, go pass the hat on the Facebook page. Can't hurt, right?

Paheeba day hmmm? I am intrigued.

Any chance that a separate page on this site could be made to corral all of the charity posts for those of us who aren't on Facebook but occasionally feel like helping out a Pajibamate? I always feel bad for not donating when I see them in the Pajiba Love but then I can never find them when I'm feeling flush.

Yay for Paheeba day
For those of you who don't have the dvd lying around, Night of The Living Dead is available to stream on hulu.

Sorry I've not posted for a while. I started out intentionally avoiding some of the ludicrous arguments, and that turned into just reading the articles and reverting to lurk mode. It seems that everyone who wants to go full retard chooses to do it on the reviews that I'd normally comment on. Such is life.

But the Pink family is extremely honored to still be in the thoughts of the Pajiba community. Alastair and I are doing pretty well--we just went to the Fair last week for the first time without her, and while we had a great time, it was pretty emotional to think that she didn't get to experience it with us.

Posted by: ahamos at October 5, 2009 2:57 PM

About the headline on this post, it certainly caught my attention and made me read it. But I was mildly offended by seeing AlabamaPink’s named sullied by being mentioned with Polanski.

Posted by: EricD at October 5, 2009 4:03 PM

Okay, I'm an idiot. It's not my place to say when and where Pink's name can be used. My heart goes out to you and your child sir. What a bittersweet feeling it must be to go to the fair and have a nice day but be missing such an important part.

Oh yes, I will be seeing Saw VI. I dragged my heels on an article I was working on based on the series attempting to describe the continued appeal in the context of, among other forms, the Medieval morality play. I think I've got a compelling argument defending the first five films, but there is a large part of me that hopes the sixth film is so far removed from the overriding moralistic arc of the series that I can bin the notes and move on to happier, more fulfilling pastures.

Sawfest is a great deal, though, if they do it again. The last time I did it, I churned out nine different articles/stories and a few other treatments during the first three films since the sidelights stayed on until they played Saw IV. All for the cost of one movie ticket. That was 2.50 a film. Bargain basement prices. That would mean less than $2 a film for the entire series and a midnight screening. Mock me all you want, this seems like the perfect night to plan out my Nano, go people watching, and hide away from the connected world for a few hours.

Hey, thanks so much for linking to my page. I was wondering why there was a huge jump in members. And thanks to everyone who joined.

Posted by: Pheagan at October 5, 2009 4:24 PM

Wait, it's pronounced "pa-HEE-ba?" Damnit, I thought it was "pa-ZSEE-ba" like "Zsa Zsa".

I feel dumb enough already. This is the last thing I need.

Posted by: superasente at October 5, 2009 6:28 PM

Actually, it''s pronounced Pa-JY-ba. Though personally I have a hard time not pronouncing it Pa-GEE-ba in my head.

I miss Spambot. This new girl Jessie just doesn't seem to have the same amount of personality.
