Toronto is right in the middle of their film festival, which means the rest of getting a bunch of new trailers. There’s a lot of Oscar bait in there (I’m looking at you, The Danish Girl), but there are also some smaller indie mega-dramas you may not have heard of in the mix. Like I Smile Back. The official synopsis of this movie seems pretty generic, a story we’ve definitely seen in countless iterations.

Laney is an attractive, intelligent suburban wife and devoted mother of two adorable children. She has the perfect husband who plays basketball with the kids in the driveway, a pristine house, and a shiny SUV for carting the children to their next activity. However, just beneath the fa├žade lie depression and disillusionment that send her careening into a secret world of reckless compulsion. Only very real danger will force her to face the painful root of her destructiveness and its crumbling effect on those she loves.
Suburban depression and Perfect Life Syndrome aren’t inconsequential, but they are subjects we’ve seen covered extensively in movies. So what makes this one different? From the look of this trailer, it’s a shockingly stellar performance from Sarah Silverman. Not only does this look to be her One Hour Photo, her Truman Show— but it also looks like a brutally honest depiction of mental illness and depression. And seeing as that’s a plague that’s been hitting the comedy world hard, it’s even more meaningful on a personal level that this could be a huge breakout for Silverman.
