Rage, Rage Against Jude Law in Drag

Some of you may recall, several months ago, seeing images of Jude Law in drag, which he was doing for a British film called Rage, from director Sally Potter. I hadn’t actually heard anything about the film since then, until Cindy alerted me last night that it was now available online. Rage, which also stars Judi Dench and Eddie Izzard, among some other familiar faces, is a black satire about the fashion industry. It concerns a student filmmaker recording interviews at a New York fashion house, when he stumbles into a murder investigation. The film’s point, apparently, is that the fashion industry kills people. There are only three reviews of Rage on Rottentomatoes — one positive, and two negative. This blurb from Variety sounds about right:

The title of Brit helmer Sally Potter’s latest, “Rage,” partly refers to some of its characters’ seething emotions, and partly reps an ironic truncation of the fashion-world phrase “all the rage.” Rage, or at least indignant annoyance, may also be what some auds will feel after having paid to see this lame black comedy-cum-indictment of the fashion industry. Although the name cast almost makes the pic bearable, “Rage’s” absurd story about murder on the catwalk, told through straight-to-camera monologues, reps a tiresome 94 minutes. Novelty of seeing Jude Law in drag and Judi Dench smoking a joint may ensure limited theatrical outings.

Rage is being released for free online at this site — for reasons I don’t quite understand, it’s also being released in installments. I guess they think it’s compelling enough to draw us back for days two through five. It’s not. I watched the first 18 minutes, and besides Jude Law in drag, it’s hardly really worth your time, although the Jude Law interviews (he’s a Russian transvestite) definitely is worth a peak.

Here’s the trailer:

Oh Eddie Izzard, Dianne Wiest, Judi Dench. Why?

Steve Buscemi, too. Why?

The fashion industry killing people? That's the exact plot of Zoolander.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at September 30, 2009 6:44 PM

And does that picture make anyone else... uncomfortable?

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at September 30, 2009 7:11 PM

Oooh, somone should make a list of the top ten best looking actors in drag...

I vote for Johnny Depp in Before Night Falls. Damn, he was pretty.

Posted by: Ali at September 30, 2009 7:31 PM

AHAHAHA!!! Optimus, you took the words right out of my mouth.

But... why male models?

Posted by: Jelinas at September 30, 2009 7:41 PM

Jelinas, are you serious? I just told you that a moment ago.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at September 30, 2009 7:52 PM

Jude was pretty damned impressive. As a whole, the first episode didn't exactly suck me in, but I've got to see what Eddie does.

Posted by: Cindy at September 30, 2009 8:27 PM

MelBivDevoe/Jelinas, your comments make me want to watch Evolution. I'll put up with anything for 'one-raised-eyebrow' Duchovny... and some accident prone JM.

Aaaand Ackroyd.

Fuck it, I guess I just like the movie.

I kind of like Sally Potter. I had to watch Thriller, The Tango Lesson, and Orlando for a film/women's studies class a couple years ago and got pretty into all three of them, and although I was kind of confused/bored by the Man Who Cried, it had some cool stuff too. So I may see this.

Plus... IZZARD!!

Jude law in drag??? I thought it was Tina Fey!!

Ali,
actors looking good in drag - how about Gael Garcia Bernal in Bad Education? Or Cillian Murphy in Breakfast on Pluto?

Posted by: Tarn at October 1, 2009 5:54 AM

I'd embrace Eddie Izzard any time.

Posted by: mswas at October 1, 2009 9:20 AM

I dunno, he might think the Jude Law interviews are worth a mountaintop. Who are you to judge, hmm?

Posted by: Carrie at October 1, 2009 9:42 AM

I find Jude Law so much more attractive in drag. Ditto for Eddie Izzard (who I'm going to see in December - squee!)

Posted by: Squeeziee at October 1, 2009 3:22 PM

that picture of Jude looks a lot like Bridget Fonda from "Point of No Return"...
