Trailer Appreciation / Dustin Rowles

If you’re one of the few who have never given in to the magic of John Hughes because you’re put off by the teen comedy genre, allow me to introduce you to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, which is not only my favorite John Hughes movie, but my favorite John Candy movie, and my favorite holiday movie of all time. It you liked Tommy Boy, then you’ll either love Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (because it’s infinitely better) or hate it (because you’re a half-brained troglodyte).

The trailer doesn’t quite do the film justice — like most trailers for comedies, it focuses on the gags and leaves out the heart, which is difficult to capture in two minutes without an Arcade Fire song. But trust me: Your spleen will split and your heart will pour (and your hair may just catch on fire).

I’ll tell you this, though: 80’s trailer narrators were horrible.

Pulp Fiction Review | Frank Darabont to Direct The Walking Dead

Once upon a time there was a guy named Steve Martin. He made some wonderful movies and some not quite so wonderful. But aliens stole Steve Martin back in 1991 and replace him with an evil nonacting cyborg. He esacped once, in 1999, but now he is locked away on the mothership, playing his banjo in lonely solitude. Here's to you Steve.

Does this movie still hold up? I remember loving this movie. Hughes death inspired me to watch it, but I'm worried that it won't still be good and I"ll destroy yet another beloved childhood memory.

Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy. I pity them now.

Maybe it's a good thing we lost Chris Farley and John Belushi.

Aw, thanks. Just the thought of this one cheered me right up.

Luker,

This movie holds up like it's on Viagra.

"I have two dollars, and a Casio..."

Yup, it still holds up.

Awesome! Thanks alphawhiskey and b-slim. I shall watch it again tonight.

EricD HA!

Seriously, Planes, Trains and Automobiles is amazing. Every time I watch it I'm blown away. And it is unfortunate that the trailer leaves out the heart. If it was all just gags, it wouldn't ever hold up. But Candy and Martin do an amazing job at giving you that sweet heartache where you forgo breathing for a minute so you don't actually cry.

So effing good!

Martin was also good in The Spanish Prisoner (1997), but he wasn't really Steve Martin in that one...

I have to disagree with the implied Bowfinger love. Blech.

My favorite movie, period. I can't count the number of times I've seen it, and I always laugh my ass off in all the same places. John Candy was a gift. Steve Martin's rant at the rental agent spoke for all of America against shitty customer service everywhere. Someday I hope to replicate it in my own special way.

I want to find the spambot forum and annoy them by littering the site with on-topic posts in perfect English.

Steve Martin's wife was sooo hot in that movie.
