Breath. Taken.

Posted by: Kolby at November 16, 2011 3:34 PM

Beautiful.

Posted by: Robert at November 16, 2011 3:37 PM

Wow! Five of the top seven billed actors in the movie are actually from Scotland!

Take that, Akira!

Posted by: The Mutt at November 16, 2011 3:40 PM

I hate to say it, but this trailer seems to have lost the epic fantasy elements of the original teaser in favor of a more "Disney Princess Movie" approach.

However, it also seems that they're playing very coy with major plot points so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Plus, it's Pixar.

Posted by: Barry at November 16, 2011 3:42 PM

Want. Now. Make it be 2012? Please? Anyone want to start planning local Pajiba meetups to go see it en masse?

Posted by: jmd at November 16, 2011 3:49 PM

I got goosebumps. I can't wait.

Posted by: Miss Heather at November 16, 2011 3:55 PM

There wasn't anything in the teaser, so I was annoyed to no end over the hosannas.

Posted by: Jay at November 16, 2011 3:59 PM

Before I hit play I was thinking, "I'm going to be subjective. Even though it's Pixar, I don't want to get too over-hyped."

Then Billy Connolly's voice started before anything and I was sold.

Posted by: Paultera at November 16, 2011 4:01 PM

it reminds me of Tangled.....if Tangled decided to ante up to 11 and go "boom!"

Posted by: Lord-ninja at November 16, 2011 4:01 PM

WANT!

Posted by: KatSings at November 16, 2011 4:02 PM

@Jay:

Yes, it was only a teaser, but it set a tone and that was what people were reacting to. Plus the animation looked promising.

The trailer abandons that tone: Now everything is brightly lit (I thought this was Scotland?) and the Disney-ish story elements have been brought to the forefront. It looks kinda Dreamworks, actually.

I'm still hoping this will be a jaw-dropper.

Posted by: Barry at November 16, 2011 4:08 PM

That said, this isn't flooring me either.

Posted by: Jay at November 16, 2011 4:17 PM

Oh. My. Fuck.

Posted by: A-schaef at November 16, 2011 4:18 PM

So it's How To Train Your Dragon by way of Tangled?

Posted by: whatBENwatches at November 16, 2011 4:23 PM

Mmmm...all ginger curls and attitude. I'm gonna marry that girl, someday. (Just don't tell the Mrs.)

So yeah, some of the animation looked a little too "How to Train Your Dragon". But Scotland! Huzzah!

Posted by: NateS1973 at November 16, 2011 4:28 PM

My curly-redheaded daughter is beyond excited for this.

Posted by: Sara H at November 16, 2011 4:35 PM

Feast your eyes.

I'm ready.

DAMN IT!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at November 16, 2011 4:46 PM

This was announced as a Disney-styled princess flick from day one. No one has been had or lied to if they read a single descriptive word attached to the myriad of blog and news postings stating exactly that. This trailer delivers that promise.

Posted by: Robert at November 16, 2011 5:16 PM

Hey Mrs. J. - I saw it earlier on Tor as well - try their site? http://www.tor.com/blogs/2011/11/full-trailer-for-pixars-brave-is-here

Posted by: jmd at November 16, 2011 5:23 PM

Oh dear.

I can not sit through those accents. Even though they are genuine. Perhaps even because they are genuine. It grates my ear holes.

I made it through the whole trailer, but it took two pause breaks.

Oh dear.

Posted by: The Only New Zealander at November 16, 2011 5:34 PM

Arya and Lord Commander Mormont? Animated? Yes please

Posted by: Luke at November 16, 2011 6:13 PM

So it's How To Train Your Dragon by way of Tangled?

Read my mind. O_o

I adored the first and mildly enjoyed the second, so I'm sure I'll like this...but I'm more excited about the second HTTYD. :P

In fact, probably more excited about the direct-to-dvd "Gift of the Nightfury" that just landed last night. I'll be using every excuse this holiday season to say "Happy Snoggletog!" instead of the usual PC fare.

Posted by: Foxeye at November 16, 2011 6:35 PM

Looks ok. Just ok. Watered down, I believe was the sentiment expressed earlier? I'd agree.
The thing that really kind of bothers me, is why must the other "competitors" be complete useless idiots? I know it's an adventure story with a strong female protaganist, which is fantastic. But, does it not actually diminish her viability if she's merely the best of a bad crop? And laterally, what message does that hold for the boys who watch this? That they are all by extension, idiots?
I know it will be said "it is just a story. don't read too much into it and feel good for the girl". I agree. Like I said, I am thrilled to see such a story. But there's just something about it that bothers me. I put myself in the mindset of an 8 year old boy watching this, and my reaction was not heartening.

Feel free to commence the slamming.

Posted by: Odnon. at November 16, 2011 7:21 PM

This looks very "by the numbers" to me. And I love animation more than anything, but I hate when a film doesn't need to be animated yet is. Brave, here, looks to be a case in point. You could very easily plug actors into this film and make it on location. I want my animation to have elements beyond the normal realm and take me to places I can't normally go in film. This is Braveheart-lite, and could've been made the same way.

Posted by: B-Unit at November 16, 2011 7:30 PM

the problem isn't the film itself - it's just that this isn't a very good trailer. Besides the fact that it clearly draws on so many disparate unrelated scenes, those scenes appear to be mostly transitional ones, not filled with much energy, action or information. There is nothing in there that looks terrible(there are actually some really excellent pieces throughout), this trailer has just been poorly put together. The ParaNorman trailer it is not!

That being said, It's way too early to make judgments on this film, and certainley not based on this obviousley misleading trailer.

Posted by: Ninja Toes at November 16, 2011 8:05 PM

Can one of you rent me a kid so i can go see this movie?

Posted by: logan at November 16, 2011 8:08 PM

The Only New Zealander, a kiwi complaining about horrible accents is the very definition of irony.

(kidding - I'm Aussie, and ours is just as bad)

Posted by: Ed at November 16, 2011 8:12 PM

Looks good. Points for casting Kelly McDonald as the princess character.

Posted by: TylerDFC at November 16, 2011 8:16 PM

Love it. Thank god there's no Mike Myers doing his Fat Bastard.

It never fails, but every time a Pixar flick comes out, I'm usually enthralled by the hair. You guys have no idea how difficult hair is to make look real, though they've certainly got it down tight, like moving water.

That being said, I think I was more enthralled by the design and execution of her horse. Gorgeousness and gorgeosity.

Posted by: Protoguy at November 16, 2011 9:00 PM

If you don't like the accents as is, bear in mind that they were going to cast Reese Witherspoon in the lead. Everything becomes better when you think "Well, could've been Reese".

Signed

The Only OTHER New Zealander

I'll concur with those above who've remarked that this looks like warmed over How to Train Your Dragon and Tangled (stunningly animated, warmed over How to Train Your Dragon and Tangled, natch), and only add that it seems they might have thrown a tablespoon or three of Mulan into the mix as well.

Posted by: Jeff in Middletucky at November 16, 2011 9:41 PM

I know there needs to be conflict to set the plot in motion, but I'm rather tired of the "my parents don't understand me" cliche.

Posted by: Protoguy at November 16, 2011 9:57 PM

I'm actually kind of disappointed. I don't know why. I'll save you all the trouble and punch myself in the face now.

Posted by: Lauren at November 16, 2011 10:08 PM

Odnon, you make a valid point. If the heroine only triumphs because her opponents are morons, that doesn't send a good message to anybody.

Posted by: Lauren at November 16, 2011 10:12 PM

Man, there's some real Gloomy Guses here today. I'm beyond excited to see this movie. I want it to get me pregnant.

Posted by: Uriah Creep at November 16, 2011 10:26 PM

When I first watched, I would have sworn the Queen's voice was Marina Sirtis. Then I checked the cast list.

Posted by: The Mutt at November 16, 2011 10:57 PM

Looks great, though the main character bears too much of a resemblance to my vain, unpleasant niece.

That said, I want to see a reaction video like this one for the Hunger Games trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMj2PfxZ9hY

Posted by: trib at November 16, 2011 11:18 PM

Mulan II, now more ginger.

Posted by: brdkelli at November 17, 2011 12:38 AM

Beautiful animation...but based on this trailer, I'm not feeling it. I was excited for a Pixar take on high fantasy, something out of left field, yet timeless. This just seems like Tangled with a bigger budget. I will, of course, watch the film and make my judgment then.

Posted by: Freller at November 17, 2011 12:43 AM

Looks exciting but why are the torturing us? Where is The Incredibles sequel???

Posted by: Candy at November 17, 2011 12:46 AM

I like the part where the rat becomes a cook in a French restaurant.

Posted by: Lucas at November 17, 2011 1:23 AM

This looks good so far! I'm not understanding all the comparisons to Tangled, though - is it because they're both princesses? With hair?
All the artistry actually puts me more in mind of The Secret of Kells, actually. Not on quite that level, but still, I'm excited to see it.

Posted by: BiblioGeek at November 17, 2011 10:00 AM

Yeah, the animation looks great. but the humor seems kind of forced in a Dreamworks kind of way. I don't know. I still think I will like it because the film is definitely supposed to be dark in tone though the trailer only hints at it. It would seem it merely covers the beginning of the film and not the epic struggle that will surely come.

Posted by: Muteki at November 17, 2011 11:23 AM

GET ME A TARDIS BECAUSE I NEED TO GET TO 2012 RIGHT NOW!!!!

Posted by: mswas at November 17, 2011 11:40 AM

Billy Connolly is one of those people who could read out the small print on the side of a box of washing detergent and it'd sound magical to me and give me the tingles on my spine.

I'll happily pay money for this.

Posted by: Rooks at November 17, 2011 11:58 AM

Panty melting accents. I'm there. With a towel. Or two.

Posted by: BWeaves at November 17, 2011 12:16 PM

I'm disappointed. I am sure the film will be delightful, but I feel like Pixar has been known for making great stories, with unique plots and characters. And like other commenters are saying, this seems like it's been done before.

Calling it now -- Pixar is phoning this one in. And that makes me so damn sad. ::sigh::

Lovely movie Brave seems to be, but not the level we're used to from these folks. One day, there will be an interesting movie made, with an average seeming yet extraordinary girl that will (at least temporarily) silence the fools who say boys won't watch movies for girls. This is not that day.

Posted by: Donut Plains at November 17, 2011 2:11 PM

Damn Donut, you are the Gloomiest Gus of all. I'm hoping you're wrong.

The problem here is that the teaser was evocative, hinting strongly at a Big Story with Big Stakes. Contrast that with a trailer apparently cut to Disney specifications, veering directly into the clichéd "grrl power vs. inept boys and disapproving parents" trope. That is certainly a major shift in tone from one to the other.

As stated before by others, it appears that the darker aspects of the plot (and hence the Big Story) have been mostly tucked away in this trailer. And there does seem to be a more involving tale here based on the various descriptions I've read.

Posted by: Barry at November 17, 2011 3:05 PM

The main character model reminds me of Lily Cole.

Posted by: JapJay at November 17, 2011 3:24 PM

A redheaded, feisty Scottish princess who can wield a bow and arrow AND sword with the best of them?

I'm in. And that was before I found out Craig Ferguson was in this as well.
