Part "Zodiac," Part "Pi?"
The idea of a serial killer who leaves clues is always an attractive one to filmmakers. It creates tension that's very easy to portray and manipulate. David Fincher did it beautifully in Zodiac (despite the length, it kept me watching) and Se7en. This new film, "The Oxford Murders," uses a similar plot with the patterns created by numbers.
It stars Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and John Hurt (most memorably seen with an alien baby bursting out of his chest). In addition, there are a few familiar faces that I can't quite recognize.
Here's the trailer:
The more I watch this trailer, the more I dig it. The director, Alex de la Iglesia, is fairly unknown in the U.S. but he has won several Spanish film awards and is often included with Guillermo Del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron as evidence of fine Hispanic filmmakers. As far as the plot goes, is it too easy to assume Elijah Wood is the serial killer? I'm only saying this because he's such a creepy lil' fella.
