Part "Zodiac," Part "Pi?"

The idea of a serial killer who leaves clues is always an attractive one to filmmakers. It creates tension that’s very easy to portray and manipulate. David Fincher did it beautifully in Zodiac (despite the length, it kept me watching) and Se7en. This new film, “The Oxford Murders,” uses a similar plot with the patterns created by numbers.

It stars Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and John Hurt (most memorably seen with an alien baby bursting out of his chest). In addition, there are a few familiar faces that I can’t quite recognize.

Here’s the trailer:

The more I watch this trailer, the more I dig it. The director, Alex de la Iglesia, is fairly unknown in the U.S. but he has won several Spanish film awards and is often included with Guillermo Del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron as evidence of fine Hispanic filmmakers. As far as the plot goes, is it too easy to assume Elijah Wood is the serial killer? I’m only saying this because he’s such a creepy lil’ fella.

Well, he did play that creepy cannibal guy in Sin City.

Why pay to watch Frodo awkwardly try to get away from being typecast when I can just flip on any of five channels on Dish Network airing round-the-clock showings of Criminal Minds?

In all seriousness, the "oh so clever serial killer giving clues and staying one step ahead of the dumb cops" genre needs to go away for fifty years. That SHIT is played out.

now that i've seen that creepy ass picture of frodo, i can't unsee it.

thanks, pajiba.

You can hump that poor girl's leg all you want, Elijah. You'll still top my Most Asexual Actors in Hollywood list.

Posted by: jM at June 28, 2010 6:58 PM

Elijah's future as an actor is something sad to behold. There truly is no room for him to grow beyond playing creepsters for the rest of his career or some sort of parody of Frodo.

God, look at him. He's a human Hypnotoad.

Posted by: Lauren at June 28, 2010 7:11 PM

I'm betting real money that he'll guest star in whatever Law & Order (Honolulu?) or gruesome crime of the week procedural is on within three years.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 28, 2010 7:17 PM

I. Wait. When does this come out? I feel like I've seen it already and have completely forgotten it until now. Or am I some kind of cinematic psychic?

Posted by: Sefa at June 28, 2010 7:49 PM

Sefa you probably did see it. It came out a few years ago in England. Pretty average overall.

Posted by: brandon at June 28, 2010 8:34 PM

I thought I'd seen this too, then I realized it's because I have. Like, a year or two ago.

Posted by: Reina at June 28, 2010 8:55 PM

Damn, Sefa, I was hoping you were a cinematic psychic and we could correspond about future movies. Can you make that happen, please?

Posted by: Uriah Creep at June 28, 2010 9:47 PM

Somebody read the book this movie's based on "Crimenes imperceptibles" in the original by Gillermo Martinez!!

Argentinean authors FTW!!

Posted by: Franamadeus at June 28, 2010 9:54 PM

At the risk of embarrassing myself (too late), I still can't pinpoint why I find Mr. Wood so attractive. And no, perverts, it has nothing to do with his last name.

Elijah, if you're reading this...maybe I could buy you a del taco the next time you're in LA? Maybe? I'll even treat you to the value meal. xoxoxo....

I had a total crush on him when Lord of the Rings came out. I thought that both he and Orlando Bloom were the cutest guys ever.

In my defense, I was thirteen. I also had a crush on the boy who could hold a pencil between his braces and teeth (admittedly, it was pretty cool).

He's a human Hypnotoad.

FUTURAMA IS BACK, BITCHEEEEEEES!

Posted by: esme at June 29, 2010 12:10 AM

Woohoo I was an extra in the classroom scene. Was amazing to watch John Hurt write "can we know the truth" a hundred times on the blackboard and see all the girls giggling like little bitches about sitting next to Elijah.

Posted by: itsmekate at June 29, 2010 2:29 AM

It's..... It's like he's undressing me with his eyes!

I FEEL SSSAAAAAO FILTHEH!!!

But seriously, Frodo must have been captivated by something mighty preciouses for that look in the pic

This came out like 3 years ago in the UK and died without a trace.

Nothing to see here, people, move it along...

Posted by: Uriah Creep at June 29, 2010 5:58 AM

I find Elijah Wood very attractive. Not manly. More man pretty. But it's John Hurt that's getting my blood boiling in the trailer. Those eye bags. Yum. I just want to bounce up and down on them and uh. . . uh . . . nothing to see here. Move along.

Posted by: BWeaves at June 29, 2010 10:34 AM

Oh shit. I didn't see Uriah Creep's post. Great minds think alike, I guess.

Posted by: BWeaves at June 29, 2010 10:35 AM

Elijah Wood sex scene? Ew, no thanks.

Posted by: Laura at June 29, 2010 12:12 PM

This movie sucks some serious hobbit balls. Don't waste nearly two hours of your life on this piece of poo!

Posted by: Wendy at June 29, 2010 12:45 PM

Wendy's right - this is literally the worst film I have ever seen (I was sucked in because I live in Oxford, but that just makes it even worse; the respresentations of both town and university are just bizarre). Seriously, TERRIBLE film, nothing to redeem it except the amusing gratuitousness of the love scenes!

Posted by: Alana at June 29, 2010 1:36 PM

John Hurt (most memorably seen with an alien baby bursting out of his chest)

I think not good sir! Most memorably seen as English wit, and pioneer for living life out of the closet, Quentin "some roughs are really queer and some queers are really rough" Crisp. The Naked Civil Servant sir!
