Paranormal Activity 2: In My Pants?

I don’t know what you thought of Paranormal Activity, but I think I must’ve watched it under the perfect conditions (dark house, at night, and my room is at the top of the stairs) because it got me good. The actors definitely sold it. Kept me up until the wee hours of the night talking about ghost stories. I’ve had a little bit of experience with the paranormal but, as is always the case with my life, it was mostly ridiculous. If you want a real ghost story, find Pajiba regular Spender on the Facebook group. His tales (plural!) put my li’l story to shame.

That said, Paranormal Activity made lots of cash. They made a sequel.
Here’s the trailer- Potential Spoilers From Here On

This time there’s a dog and a baby! I’m going to guess and say that animal lovers might want to keep away from this one. I worry about the pup’s chances. I should care more about the baby, but I just don’t care about babies.

Can anyone recognize if this is the same house from the original? It seems similar. That would provide a connecting thread between the two films and explain why the girl from the original is still creepin’ around.

So are you afraid of spooks? Or are you a modern day Ray “I Ain’t Afraid of No Ghosts” Parker Jr.? Share your stories around the campfire in the comment section.

I don't think the house had anything to do with the haunting - it was Katy who was haunted regardless of her location.

It doesn't appear to be the first house...unless the backyard all of a sudden got epic!

I was one of the few who liked Paranormal Activity while accepting it was flawed -- the male lead was an annoying douche, the filming at times seemed implausible. That said, I've always been more afraid of the unseen than the obvious. And PA created enough mood to hint at more.

Could this be better? SPOILER Unless the demonic entity inside Katie is somehow giving her superpowers, what exactly is she going to do that can't be stopped by a normal person?

This got some good reviews here so I finally watched in on Netflix instant... I thought it was rather tedious and it didn't scare me in the least. I wouldn't mind watching the second one if they kill the baby though.

My daughter and I saw it in the cheap theater last year. We both thought it was too stupid for words.

At one point, when they were getting creeped out by stuff falling and doors slamming, she looked at me and said, "Mom, they probably just have cats."

I only have one ghost story. But technically it isn't a ghost story as much as it is a religious one. Nonetheless it was terrifying and Christianity is bad.

I was a little let down by the first one because the scariest moment was given away in the trailers. I didn't think it was a spooky movie... until I tried to sleep that night and kept imagining things flying at me out of the dark.

So is that supposed to be Katie in the second movie? Or is this a sequel in name only, with all new characters and spooks?

There's a mirror in the room and there's no baby in the mirror. Just saying. Pleasant dreams.

Sorry, but there are three places I don't want to see kids at ALL:
-horror, though I will make an exception if they are the demon spawn doing the murdering
-porn
-anywhere within ten rows of me on a five hour flight

My wife was terrified by it. She didn't sleep that night, and only restlessly for a few days longer. She was upset. With me. For making her watch it.

So yeah. I loved it.

I thought it had some seriously scary moments, but most of it was a bit dull. The pacing was weird and jump-scares are lazy. But there were some scary parts. I know I'll watch this.

Well, anyone who didn't see the first one probably doesn't have to after seeing that.

Though, I have no idea what's going on with this. Is that the same girl? If so, what is going on? There are no other people in this trailer, just a dog and a baby and her. So...where's the conflict? Plus, *SPOILER* the end of the first movie specified quite clearly that the girl was never seen again. Thus, if there's somehow video evidence of her existence, that would negate that point. Unless we're somehow supposed to be jacked into somebody's security system.

After watching the first one, I read a really interesting (though admittedly kind of frustrating at times) essay where someone examined the movie and made the point that the ending (re-shot after initial screenings at the rumored suggestion of Steven Spielberg) doesn't match the rest of the film, because the rest of the film is shot as though the audience has taken on the perspective of the demon through the camera. So when she attacks the camera, it's like the demon is attacking itself, which doesn't make sense, if you're looking at it from that perspective (and honestly, that idea made the movie much better for me, so I choose to agree with it).

Really enjoyed the first one, saw it in a humvee on a windy night outside of Kandahar...even on my mac it creeped the piss out a us. The cookie cutter house and couple worked for me.

Also, I dont think that was Katie.

I just watched this recently on Netflix. It didn't scare me, but I think that's because it came out so long ago I pretty much already knew what happened. Also, I was pretty glad the BF died at the end. He was the douchiest douche ever. Like Christ, she was pretty cute and seemed nice, she couldn't do better than a person who didn't seem to care about her AT ALL? Totally deserved to die. In a way, it almost made me feel like the demon was trying to protect her. Like it was her best friend trying to reveal that she needed to leave her toxic relationship.

Oh, and I grew up in a house that was previously owned by my great grandparents, was over 100 yrs old, and most definitely haunted. I have lots of scary stories, if people really want to hear them.

@Robert,

You can see the baby in the mirror at :49, but it would be an interesting concept to have a movie where a baby is doing the haunting and you don't know that the baby is a ghost until the very end or something like that.

Posted by: Dangerous Dave at July 1, 2010 9:32 AM

LOL, totally with you on the dog vs. baby.

Posted by: Eva at July 1, 2010 10:47 AM

It was meh... The end was good and I did watch alone in the dark. I couldn't get passed the bad acting.. I'll probably watch 2..

Posted by: SarahReznor at July 1, 2010 12:42 PM

The key is that after the girl appears, the baby can be seen in the reflection, but not in the actual crib!

922 - I'd like to hear them.

Hey Chris,
I have so, so many. They are much better told in person, but here goes.
1. Sound of chairs scraping on the floor in the kitchen after everyone goes to bed.
2. Repeated times that my mom thought my dad was coming home from his overnight shift because she heard very loud boots on the wooden stairs, that just stopped at the top. Nobody there.
3. Running water in the bathroom to be heard by both myself and my younger sister almost every night, again no one there when we checked.
4. If I was home alone the doors upstairs would often slam shut, even when the windows weren't open.
5. My older brother claims he heard something walking on the roof and falling through and thudding on his floor. No evidence of anything physical there the next morning.
6. I myself used to sit on the piano bench across from the basement door and often lose my hearing, it would be like they cut the soundtrack, and I could only hear weird hissing noises. This was when I was very young, about 4 or 5.
7. Basement door would never, ever stay closed even if you locked it.
8. My great grandmother claimed that when she was very, very ill and bedridden in one of the bedrooms she saw a robed figure she thought was Jesus. She said she began to pray and it hissed and retracted, then disappeared. Of course, she was very old school Polish and religious, plus she could have been delirious, so I can't claim authenticity on this one.
9. In the same room she used to have a portrait of the Virgin Mary. One week it kept falling off the wall, then flipping upside down every time the put it back. The next week my GG's sister died.
10. When I was about 10 or so I would wake up a lot after feeling like someone had stroked my face. Everyone else was asleep. This never felt malicious though.
11. My mom claims that when I was an infant she had me sleeping in bed with her. She woke up because she had a dream that some shadowy figure was suffocating me. She said she reached over instinctively to make sure I was ok and felt like electricity ran through her. Afterwards I woke up screaming crying. Again, this was after a bad dream, so I don't know how accurate this is.

Also, the house next door (we lived in a row home in Philadelphia, for reference) was abandoned and on several separate occasions my sister and I saw a woman in the upstairs window looking sad then disappearing. Neither of us knew this happened, and when I was telling my mom about it one day, my sister overheard and was shocked, b/c she saw the same thing when she was by herself one day.

Mostly, to me it was vaguely menacing but never really a specific intense event, this is why I believe some of the more "shocking" stories to be embellished, but it definitely felt like there was something malevolent hanging out there. People can believe it or not, I don't really mind if people think I am exaggerating or that I just was inclined to want to believe, so I did. I absolutely 100% believe it was haunted, there are so many things that just couldn't be explained in any logical way. There's more stuff that happened too, but honestly I don't really think about it much anymore, it's been like 11 years since I lived there.

I've been thinking about this movie and my friend and I have decided that the demon will now go after Katie's sister. In the first movie she tells the Ghost Specialist about how her sister could see the demon too. So i think the demon simply chose Katie first and now will go after the sister.

Just saw Paranormal Activity 2 & I really enjoyed it. I loved the first one. Movies like this are an acquired taste. My husband thinks they are just silly but for me, it hits me on a more personal level. I was "followed" by a spirit/ghost from the time i was about 4 til I was about 17. Some incidents were mild, even somewhat playful. Others... not so much. I'm 35 now & a mother of 2 sons but, let me tell you, those years i will never forget. Keeps me up at night sometimes. My boys love my ghost stories. They laugh about it but come bedtime, they wanna sleep in mommys room. lol!! Anyway, I like how the 2 movies tie into eachother. I was impressed.

Someone before stated something along the lines of "unless the demon gave her superpowers.." I just want to say...that one of the symptoms of being possessed by a demon is unrealistic strength. And in case anyone hasn't seen it and wants to know...Paranormal Activity 2 takes place before the first one...where the stuff happens to Katie's sister, then you find out how Katie gets it...
