This Trailer Made That Notion Considerably Easier / Dustin Rowles

There’s a new movie coming out soon called Nowhere Boy, about the early life of John Lennon, covering the period in which he met Paul McCartney and, ultimately, formed the Beatles. It comes from British director Sam Taylor Wood and stars Aaron Johnson as Lennon. He looks nothing like the Lennon I remember, but then again, I’m far more familiar with the way Lennon looked during the Yoko years.

The trailer looks decent — it also features Kristen Scott Thomas and Thomas Sangster (Love, Actually, “Doctor Who”) as McCartney. I can’t really say I’m enthused about a John Lennon movie, though — I’d think if his early life were that fascinating, there’d already be a movie about it. It centers around his relationship with his aunt and mother, who tussled over custody of him. He escaped into the music of America, which I suppose inspired him to form the Beatles. Not that compelling a story, and neither the principals nor the trailer inspires much in the way of excitement. I think I’d prefer a movie about the Yoko years, though if I were that interested, I’d probably seek out the TV movie that was probably made about it.

Check it:

Aw, come on, you're my age, you know there was!

You didn't watch it??

I can't remember if it was any good.

I refuse to watch this based on the lame title alone.

Wow, Kristin Scott Thomas has aged very well. That shot of her reaction to "I'm gonna start a rock-n-roll band"? The arched eyebrow? Marvelous. Had a crush on her since Under the Cherry Moon.

And the trailer makes the movie look interesting - way more interesting than the title does.

They should have gotten Paul Rudd to play Lennon. He nailed it in Walk Hard.

How long ago was Love, Actually? Jesus Christ, the airport kid is huge!

Holy CRAP, Sofia, you're right! That's him! WOW, I feel old.

This looks kinda cute. Cheesy, but cute.

Posted by: figgy at October 28, 2009 11:22 PM

Yeah, the airport kid is my age. So I feel OK about finding him totally attractive. He completely won me over on Doctor Who.

I dunno... I've read every fucking thing there is to read about The Beatles and can't imagine that there's anything new to be learned from this film. Sure it's kinda cool to see it acted out but then it's the same kind of "speculative history" that so many others have written, so what does one really bring away from it?
I'll likely see it because it smells of Beatles but will probably hate it.
Hell, I hate everything these days.

I don't like The Beatles. There, I said it. Commence verbal castration.

I'd only care about this if it had more George Harrison in it. But it won't. So I won't.

Airport boy is only two months younger than me.
How is that possible - he's eight years old!

You should, my sweet, but just for the record: I'm right-handed, so I feel with my left hand and do all my manipulating, massaging etc. with my right.

Not that Bob Spitz' biography of the Beatles is the absolute gospel but I don't remember any of this stuff happening in the book. I do remember though that it wasn't John's band, it was formed jointly by Lennon/McCartney (nice ring to that.)

I would love to see a movie based on Bob Spitz' book though. That would be cool.

I don't like them either. Never have. Never will. Is it a Canadian thing?

Also, I hate Oprah, the Bee Gees, children, jube jubes, Trailer Park Boys, Kraft Dinner made with milk, tomato soup made with water, Hummel figurines, fake flowers, milking cows, bubble baths, ham and liquid paper.

Posted by: Kelly at October 29, 2009 8:58 PM

theres another way to make kraft dinner?

theres another way to make kraft dinner?

Of course. Drain the water, add the powder mix, a few tablespoons of margarine, mix it all together and you're good to go. It's deliciously cheesy.

This is not a "speculative history," the movie is based on Julia Baird's biography of her childhood and relationship with her half-brother John. This story about the triangle between John, his mother, and his aunt has everything to do with his life as an adult.
Bob Spitz is a moron and his "authenticity" is all second-hand.

Posted by: arcee at October 30, 2009 1:58 PM

@Spender This movie is based on the book Imagine This (UK)/The Private John Lennon (US). It was written by John Lennon's half-sister Julia. She came forward only recently after many years to clarify many untruths and misunderstandings about John's early years. To wit, some who think call themselves Beatles-aficianados didn't even know he _had_ a sister.

I have heard that Julia isn't happy with how the movie turned out anyhow.

Full disclosure, I work for the US publisher of her book, The Private John Lennon.
