Not THAT Illusionist

Sylvian Chomet the Illusionist.jpg

IMDB just posted the trailer for the latest film from Sylvain Chomet, the director best known for the award winning The Triplets of Belleville. It seems like it will be very French and won’t contain a lot of dialogue.

The synopsis says it will be about a magician in the 1950s who is slowly being replaced at large theaters by rock stars. As such, he has to start doing shows at small villages. There he meets a young girl who thinks his magic is real. As he keeps “conjuring” gifts for her, he slowly drives himself to financial ruin.

I’m going to say this will be whimsical, but also a little dark. Here’s the trailer.

2D animation is still alive and can produce some great things! And it’s impossible for them to make this 3D… right? Not that the big studios are clamoring to get their mitts on a little French animated film, but I’m just rejoicing that a good movie is coming out. And you don’t have to be Pixar to make it!

Tell me, are you charmed by this? Did you like Les Triplettes De Belleville ? I am and I did! And now I might put on some Edith Piaf and dance around a little.

You mean except for the English-language 3D remake that'll surely be announced next week, right?

Who, me? Jaded? Pfft.

Good, because that Illusionist sucked sweaty monkey balls.

Well, I'm enchanted

YAY!! I've been waiting for this for so long!

I adored Belleville Rendez-vous and this looks every bit as exquisite.

Portez-moi au cinéma, s'il vous plait.

This looks good. I haven't seen Triplets, but it's been in my queue forever. Maybe I'll bump it up and watch it next week.

I saw Triplets of Belleville in the theater when I lived in a real city with real movie theaters. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Own the DVD. Haven't played it for my 2-year old yet, but plan to very soon.

I doubt seriously that I'll be able to see this movie in a theater, without a long plane ride. Which makes me sad and makes me want to sell my crappy little house and move the hell out of this lame place. The animation looks very similar to Belleville, but the colors look a bit brighter. Can't wait to hear the soundtrack.

This looks wonderful and brilliant! If it's half as quirky and winsome as The Triplets of Belleville, I will be thrilled!

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Do I even need to see the trailer?

Thank god for Kendall One, they'll play it at Kendall One.

I love all the sepia tones and the worn feeling to all the props and scenery. Disney doesn't know how to do "worn."

Is this going to be one of those "you wish, old man" films? I see the script was written by Jacques Tati, and I heart him but Ive gotten that vibe from him sometimes. And theres that cute young girl following gramps around throughout the whole trailer. Shudder.

yessssss. Triplets was wonderful, though I need to see it again. This looks like another treat. Oh how I miss the 2D animation. There's just something so magic about it now that Pixar and 3D are taking over.

Jesus, Those French just won't be happy until one of their movies depresses me so much that I go out and shoot myself, will they?

bat: I think its less that and more likely a film about an old, superfluous man, still talented but passed up by the world, who happens upon someone who makes him feel wanted and important and amazing again, leading him to chase that rather platonic but solitary feeling to his ruin. From the synopsis, he seems less like a dirty old man, and more like a sad one.
