One, Two Michael Bay's Coming for You

The first teaser trailer for Nightmare on Elm Street gave us a little taste of Freddy’s back story — this one tells us what we’re in for. And what we’re in for is another Michael Bay horror film. Granted, Jackie Earle Haley looks and sounds flat-out phenomenal. But it’s another series of vanilla teenagers who will unfortunately dominate much of the screen time. Kyle Gallner is absolutely obnoxious — he’s a series of pained expressions in whatever film he’s in. The good news is that there will be no debating where our rooting interests will lie: Freddy Krueger. That is, unless he messes with Connie Britton — who plays the “heroine’s” (Rooney Mara) mother.

I hope it’s Connie that gets to take out Freddy in the end. And I hope she does it with a terrible impression of Sandra Bullock, as retribution for stealing her shtick in The Blind Side.

As bad Michael Bay horror movies go, though, this one I’m slightly enthusiastic about. I mean: How can you not be a little excited about Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy?

Oh man, the tone & inflection on the 1st line of dialogue ("Hello?") says everything that needs to be said about this movie. Where do they get these jabroni actors & actresses? These people should be washing Freddy's car...his hell car, in hell.

I'm sorry but this still pisses me off. "How can you not be a little excited about Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy?" Well, the only thing they seemed to get right here is that they don't show much of his face. For me, the (mostly unseen) Englund in the Craven original ist still very, very scary. Haley is good. But he'll propably still feel like an understudy.

Nightmare has never been my favorite horror franchise, so I've got no objections to this. I *love* Connie Britton, but it's kind of jarring to see her here. Anyway, the special effects look alright, and the concept is neat. I'd watch it, I guess. I can't really summon up a lot of emotion for this either way.

I agree that the acting talent here is one step above string-puppetry. It will be very fun seeing them tortured at every turn and I look forward to the levitation and bed-sucking deaths (or their better-be-sweet-ass reimaginings). Classics.

Jackie Earle Haley is going to be the tits and anyone who thinks otherwise is feeding themselves a big lie-filled shit sandwich.

I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it but I'm pretty excited for this. Technically speaking this looks really impressive and Jackie Earle Haley is an awesome fit for the role. Englund's brand of horror was great in the 80s but it doesn't really hold up today.

Then again, I thought the new Friday the 13th was a really fun horror movie so I'm probably alone on this one.

Eh, I'm fine with it. Most of them are just cannon fodder anyway, as they were in the originals. Despite the presence of Depp, the first one wasn't exactly filled with future Oscar winners. So let's not put the Elm Street franchise on too high a pedestal, folks. There were three... no, let's call it 2.5 good movies. The first one, Dream Warriors (#3), and I kinda dug Freddy Vs. Jason, even though it is really, really stupid.

The rest were pretty awful, and Englund's shtick after a couple versions was just painful and unfunny.

Plus, lest we forget, the remake has Clancy Brown. CLANCY BROWN! He makes all things better.

To be perfectly honest, the only Nightmare on Elm Street film I really enjoyed was 3: The Dream Warriors.* The original is OK, mostly for Englund's performance and some good gore. So long as this isn't CGI'd to oblivion (it will be), then I don't have a problem with it (I will).

Now, if they announce a remake of 3 after the inevitable sequel, I'll be pissed. Until then, I shall bask in the warming glow of another twisted Jackie Earle Haley performance.

*Yes, I am a big horror fan. No, slashers are not my favorite sub-genre. Yes, I do enjoy some slashers, but they aren't exactly the most mainstream choices. I'd rather watch The Bird with the Crystal Plumage or The Demon--now there's a film with a razor-gloved killer that can send chills down your spine and it came out first (1979).

I'm a little torn on this. I like the tone, and the Jackie Earle Haley and the Connie Briton, but on the other hand, I'm not big on the stupid whiney teens and the Michael Bay and for some reason I can't get the image of Rorschach out of my head whenever Freddie speaks. Is that weird?

Interesting. I would've thought Kyle Gallner got a lifetime pass for being on "Veronica Mars," which he was awesome on.

John Connor! Thomas Dekker can and is basically awesome, lifetime pass for the Honey I shrunk the kids TV series!

Kellen Lutz is a hottie and I don't prescribe to "Twilight" nonsense. So, if he takes his shirt off at some point and then doesn't die like a pussy. I'm so there.

Also, Question:
If Freddy was in fact a child molester and wants revenge. Why doesn't he kill the parents and keep the kids for himself?

DAMN YOU WORK FILTER -- I CANNOT WATCH THE TRAILER!

Posted by: superasente at February 25, 2010 12:23 PM

Like most previous commenters I'm going to have to flip a coin on this one.

I generally prefer my scary movies in the form of psychological thrillers that get inside my head without a lot of fake blood and guts, but I've always made an exception for Freddy. Let's face it: the guy is funny in a dry, punny sort of way and the way he kills those idiot teenagers is creative and hilarious. I saw one of the movies - which one was in 3-D? - on a date when I was 15 and remember thinking, "This is supposed to be a horror movie? It's a comedy!"

On the other hand: Michael Bay. And remake.

Jackie Earle Haley still has my goodwill from "Watchmen," but from the trailers it doesn't seem to me like he has the tongue-in-cheek wit that Englund did, which for me was about 80% of why I liked the movies.

I actually think this looks decent. Kyle Gallner does really suck (and I'm probably among the few who hated him on Veronica Mars) but ever since her role on Supernatural, I really like Katie Cassidy so it evens out for me. I'll probably end up checking this out.

@thrillho, nice to know studio hacks find their way to these websites.

Having said that, I'm interested enough to see it but I've got no expectations. Since its a Michael Bay produced film, I'm expecting an American flag to be flying at some point, cuz it gets his micro penis hard, and I'm expecting some form of the bed-swallowing to occur, since this is a Bay production and someone has to swallow to get ahead.

Is.....is that blonde girl supposed to be a teenager? She's clearly 40.

Otherwise, I like the look of this. Freddy himself draws me in, but casting Haley is the clincher. I'll be seeing this no matter what.

Strangely, I'm fine with this. I thought I'd be freaking out right now. Yeah it's gonna be filled with teenagers who can't act getting cut to ribbons.

So was the original.

It's going to have some gore, mostly tame in comparison to a lot of other genre pics.

So did the original.

And it's going to have the saving grace of a fantastic performance by the main antagonist.

Just. like. the. original.

So all this up in arms shit, which normally I would participate in, seems a little disingenuous. This is not Rob Zombie remaking Halloween, you guys.

I'm actually looking forward to this one, and it's specifically because they're going for a scary interpretation of Freddy Krueger, rather than the Catskills routine Robert Englund devolved into after the first movie. Before people start getting testy about remaking the "classics", try to remember he killed Breckin Myer with a fucking Nintendo Power Glove. And referenced the commercial for the glove while he did it. The CRYPT KEEPER had less heinous puns than Freddy in his prime.

I just wanna share my experience here. I found my boyfriend several months ago, who is 10 years older than me, at http://EUAgeless.com/, a free place for age-gap relationship. It's fabulous! Maybe you wanna check it!

Posted by: Jim at February 26, 2010 1:27 AM

I am looking forward to this. I loved the original and it scared the crap out of me. Of course, my mom let me watch this stuff at 10, so that may be why.

I would prefer some teens that I know have some acting talent, but I'm one of those people who liked to see a familiar face on the poster. Other than than, I think it will be pretty good. God, it can't be any worse then H2. *shudder*

Posted by: TWoP_Fan at February 26, 2010 2:12 PM

I'm actually pleasantly surprised. Its got a decent chance at being the third good Freddy movie.

For the record, the good ones are the first, and Wes Craven's New Nightmare (the 7th). A bit meta, but effective. OK, it was extremely meta, but I still liked it.

Was I the only utterly turned on yet horrified by the line, "Why are you screamin'? I haven't even cut you yet..."
