After first premiering at the London Film Festival nigh on a year ago, and suffering a great deal of distribution difficulties due to some *ahem* conflicts *ahem* with the Church, BBC Film Productions has finally released a trailer for Louis Theroux’s My Scientology Documentary.

Said Theroux of the movie:

More than 10 years ago, I approached the church to see if they might let me in to make a documentary.

“I thought I might be able to bring a sense of nuance and perspective to people’s understanding of a faith that has been much ridiculed. Just as I have done with other non-mainstream stories, I hoped to see it from the inside and make a human connection with its clerics and congregants. But I was repeatedly turned down.

The quirky and disarmingly insightful documentarian worked closely with Marty Rathbun, a former senior Church official (full title: ‘Inspector General of the Religious Technology Center’) after being denied any official access. Rathbun, of course, is the person who had previously revealed that he was asked to ‘wiretap’ Nicole Kidman and engineer her split from Scientologist Tom Cruise.

The movie, from director John Dower, also had its international debut at April’s Tribeca festival, should be getting a US release date sometime in January. It is already on limited release in Australia.
