On And On South Of Heaven

The first trailer for The Rite didn’t really pull my pants down, but I have to say that the newer one is far more engaging. It delves just enough into the plot to make you a bit more interesting. The basic premise — that a rookie priest must help a veteran exorcist who may well be becoming possessed himself — is enough of a somewhat new spin on the genre. And Hopkins seems to be, for the most part, toning things down just enough to be effective. Plus, Toby Jones! And Alice Braga! And Maria Grazia Cucinotta! And Rutger fucking Hauer!
I’m down with it.
Here’s the trailer:
Not bad. The Rite is directed by Mikael Håfström (Derailed, 1408) and comes out January 28, 2011.

But I like full-tilt Hopkins action. Exorcism films need to be assaults on the psyche, not subtle accents and bad CGI. Give me Hopkins screaming at the top of his lungs, "Devil, be gone!" while spraying holy water and I might support the film.
Also, it's a January horror film. I'm reluctant at the moment to say all January horror films are bad as a film I wrote up for this site is most likely getting a one-week dumping grounds release (it came from a small production/distribution company that either does multi-city "festivals" or limited releases). I will suggest, however, that if this were a good exorcism film, it would get a September/October release.
