At this point, we’re all well-trained experts in the field of Andersonian film making. That Saturday Night Live spoof was so damn funny because it catalogued all the things we already recognize about Anderson as a filmmaker. He likes ephemera and a certain color palette. He has a recognizable taste in music and a weakness for mustaches. (Who doesn’t?) He has a fondness for capers and uniforms. But the most pervasive and enjoyable element of an Anderson film is the dry, deadpan delivery that he teases out in his actors. We’ll call it the Schwartzman Special. The Murray Maneuver. The Huston Humdinger. The Wilson…something that begins with “W.”

Though Anderson does have a tendency to favor and revisit a certain stable of actors, he’s always growing and expanding. Some take to the Anderson patter better than others and I am delighted to see that Ralph Fiennes has adopted it with gusto. Just wait for his delivery of a profanity laden sentence at the end of this new character trailer for The Grand Budapest Hotel, compare it to the blue streak he cursed in In Bruges and get excited all over again for March 7th, 2014.
