Walk This Way

In a collision of fantastic fan excitement, TK and I managed to simultaneously report back in June on the trailer for the new live action remake of Space Battleship Yamato being released in Japan on December 1st. The second trailer has been released, and now features 100% more Steven Tyler:

In the first trailer, it was pretty difficult to follow what was going on, though that might have been the editing more than the language barrier. It got the point across: space ships BOOM. This trailer adds a lot more plot and character nuance. For example, there is a protagonist. He is clearly recognizable because of his spectacular hair. Plus there are people running through corridors, which is always a good sign of ensuing excitement. And there’s a screaming guy shooting two rifles at once, not to mention many curt statements said with a grim face for emphasis. And of course the dramatic speech over the intercom just before the final battle needs no translation, because dammit today we celebrate our Independence Day!

And in case there was any lingering doubt, Japan is indeed a strange and mysterious place, a land in which they contract Steven Tyler to record a debut solo single in a foreign language to be the theme song of their movie. I guess it makes more sense than some of the stuff they sell in vending machines there.

It's Star Wolf Ken!

Maybe it's just the fact that it's about a battleship flying through space, but this movie looks awesome.

Looks like Japan finally got their "BSG" DVDs in the mail.

Is it sad that I only clicked through because I was hoping for a Marty Feldman reference instead of a Steven Tyler reference?

It's Star Wolf Ken!

Thanks for the morning laff.

(I'd like to hear Steven Tyler sing, "He tried to kill me with a forklift")

I have to delurk to say: WOW!

For those of us nearing 40 this brings back a lot of memories. For those that don't know, this was an amazing cartoon released back in the mid 1970's in Japan and later as Star Blazers in the early 1980's in the US.

If you can find the first two seasons of Star Blazers (Voyager Entertainment) on DVD, it's well worth your time.

It's about an alien attack on the earth that leaves the earth radioactive and uninhabitable. The only humans that survive live beneath the earth's surface where they are slowly dying due to radiation poisoning. You can see this in the trailer.

After receiving a message from space that there is a cure for the radiation, humanity raises the Battleship Yamato as the last hope of finding it.

This looks really good, and hopefully they'll release a version with subtitles.

I remeber watching the original as a kid, in Japan. I hope this doesn't rape that memory.

Steven Tyler ruins everything. I watched that through once without sound and it looked great. I tried it with the sound on when I got a chance and I couldn't make it through the whole thing.

So, when do you think Bay will get his hands on this and bring us even more ick?
*nevermind that I am casting this in my head.

Posted by: DeckOfficer!! at September 22, 2010 2:46 PM

Not to nitpick, but there is INFINITY amount more Steven Tyler in this one (do the math). I ain't complaining, though.

Posted by: The_wakeful at September 22, 2010 5:10 PM

And of course that should read infinity percent more, rather than infinity amount more, because I am clearly a math Nazi and an idiot.

Jay and Anne...I love you....KEEEENNNNNNN!

I may just have to overcome my aversion to KimuTaku for the sake of this movie...

Posted by: Shibuyama at September 22, 2010 6:57 PM

Too much Steven Tyler. Makes it seem Armageddonish. Must see if Star Blazers is on Netflix.

space battleship... YAMATO!

Posted by: suture_self at September 22, 2010 9:20 PM

Eat shit k-balls. The anime this is based on came out before the original tv run of BSG. In any case its almost 100% certain that the japanese will come up with a better ending than the sci-fi run of BSG

SQUEEE!!

Posted by: Protoguy at September 23, 2010 6:57 AM

Its based on an old anime of 1974 (before star wars...). The battleship is the same Yamato sunk in the World War II, they refit the ship to space travel... it was the only huge scrap of metal avaible, and they needed to construct the ship in secret. It's an interesting concept to see the pride of Japonese WWII ship in use for something good (it was a complete failure during the war...)
