Untempered Happiness Gives Me Indigestion

HBO is plowing right along with the production of “A Game of Thrones” and has tossed a couple more bits of chum into the waters to make sure that they don’t die down at all. First up is a new teaser trailer, that doesn’t reveal much of anything other than a CGI raven and a few ludicrously brief glimpses of characters.

Meh. The 3.2 seconds that show something besides the CGI raven look entertaining enough, but they’re so quick as to be just this side of static images.

Next up, we’ve got a sort of production diary thing that actually gives a lot more of an idea of the look and feel of the series. The shots aren’t polished and finished, but there’s something invigorating just in the little details, the wolf hounds sitting around between takes, the shirtless giant with his enormous sword, the carvings and stone work.

The only complaint I really have is a general complaint about this type of video. A trailer is honest to a degree, it’s saying “look what we made, doesn’t it look cool.” But this type of video is disingenuous. It’s an ad, pretending it’s not an ad. You get George RR Martin saying that the set is like walking into one of his dreams. Because if he said it looked like shit, they wouldn’t quote him in the clip. The show runners pontificate on just how amazingly this show is going to change fantasy. It’s not like they’re going to say “well, we’re really only doing a half-assed job. They wouldn’t give us percent of DVD sales, so what do we care how good it ends up being?” Snag a token actor or two like good old Boromir to say how totally and utterly awesome the source material is. There’s an unbiased source for ya.

Now I know that I’m being gratuitously unfairly cynical, but untempered happiness gives me indigestion. The bottom line goes back to that old cliched rule of good writing: show, don’t tell. Quit telling us the show is going to be good, and start showing us.

Yeah, those are some ludicrously brief glimpses of characters in that top teaser trailer, but... I still got the "trailer viewing chills", so I am all good over here.

The only complaint I have is - when the hell is he going to finish the next book. At the speed he's writing the TV series is going to catch up with him years before the last book comes out. Not to be a big fat complainer, one book every five years is better than none.

This review is probably one of the few things I've ever disagreed with SLW on. When has a behind-the-scenes ever been anything but a giant pat on the back? They could do a lot worse than gushing over Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage; it's been done. I think the brief glimpses are enough fodder for the majority of fans, especially those who will take it apart frame by frame to name all the characters until the series is released like here: http://www.westeros.org/GoT/News/Entry/UPDATED_Dissecting_the_Teaser_with_images/

I will watch this because I'm a geek BUT the books are dark and dry and nobody ever has a good day or smiles or has ANY FUN OF ANY KIND. So I hope they change the story a bit.

That's a really weird complaint. It's a series on HBO and HBO is airing the promos. Those are always fluff pieces. Besides, it's nowhere near completed. It likely won't come out until March at the earliest, I'm guessing paired up with Treme.

My concern is it looks like 300. Not digging the washed out look unless that is just a stylsitic thing to show the bleak winter. But I'd prefer some more color. Still, ridiculously excited for this.

TylerDFC,

One of the major locations in the first book is Winterfell, so the washed out look is apt.

Crap. This is almost upon us. I better get on it in reading these.

I swear, if that next book is pushed back AGAIN nothing will save that man from my wrath. And yes!!!! on the Sean Bean.

Huge fan of the series. In regards to when he's going to finish, he published a letter to his fans some months ago, telling us to stop complaining. He is also tired of people telling him he is old and fat and will die with the series unfinished like Robert Jordan. I am at work and must limit my web surfing or I would find it and link to the letter, but I'm sure it's available on fan sites.

The first trailer just screamed World of Warcraft: Reign of Chaos, to me. As for the second...is it just too hard to get a glimpse of what the dire wolves are gonna look like? I just wanna see a dire wolf! I'm guessing, the two wolves (cubs?) I saw MIGHT be them, but I want confirmation, dammit!

Hey Logan, Go fuck yourself. Change the story! Fuck you. That is seriously dumb and infuriating.
As for Dinklage playing The Imp, I don't know about that man. He is my favorite character in the series. Will Dinklage be using his american accent? Can he do an english accent? As I presume the rest of the cast will have them.

The release date now says dec 28th 2012. WTF? We'll all be burned in a cleansing fire or the earth shifted the axis. Whatever. The book comes out after we are ALL DEAD. Thanks George.

Daenerys! I saw her! I've only read the first books so far. She's my favorite character.

WHAT IS BEHIND THE WALL? I might have to check and do some Wikipedia research.

My husband and I have a theory that Dances with Dragons will be finished "just in time" to do some heavy cross-promotion when the first season comes out on DVD. Whatever, don't expect it before the end of next year.

In the meantime, read Steven Erikson.

Hopped over to Martin's blog and he's doing a convention in Australia as well as snorkling and what not. I'm honestly worried that the man is going to fall into a crevasse and not finish the series. Look at him..he's old, paunchy, smokes a pipe and drinks finely aged scotch (guessing on the last two). HOw many years can he have left? I'm a selfish prick.
