Mirror, Mirror Trailer: Whose Snow White Is The Fairest?

MirrorMirror.jpg

Well, this is a change of pace.

Here’s the trailer for Tarsem Singh’s (I’m sorry, I refuse to just call him “Tarsem”) take on the Snow White fairy tale, Mirror, Mirror. Yes, it’s the second trailer for a Snow White-themed movie less than a week, but that’s Hollywood for you. While the first one, Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman, was a dark, grim take on the tale, this one is decidedly different. It features Julia Roberts as the Queen, Lily Collins as Snow White, and Armie Hammer as a noticeably hapless Prince.

Take a lookie:

It’s weird, isn’t it? The director of The Cell, The Fall and the recent visually sumptuous (but emotionally empty) bloodbath Immortals has created a picture that’s downright whimsical. I did not see that coming. It looks to be a visually brilliant, colorful and far more winsome version, that’s for sure. It’ll be interesting to see if he can actually make the story resonate. To me, it looks pretty goddamn goofy, and not always in a good way.

Then again, it’s Snow White — the hard part’s already done, really. I like Armie Hammer and I’m glad to see him branching out, and Lily Collins looks charming, I suppose. The dwarfs are actual little people, from the looks of things. As for Julia Roberts, well, she’s doing what she usually does. She’s playing some slight variation of Julia Roberts. She does it well, but she’s less evil queen and more Julia Roberts with a mean streak and a youth complex. But hey, it should play well with the PG crowd, and it’s certainly a more lighthearted affair than Snow White and the Huntsman. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, right? Maybe?

Ah… well, at the very least, Lily Collins > Kristen Stewart.

I swear to God, that picture is somehow Jennifer Connolly in Labyrinth.

Posted by: feramones at November 15, 2011 7:59 PM

Sorry folks, should be working now.

Posted by: TK at November 15, 2011 8:07 PM

Yes, the word for today is "Goofy."

I do like Lily Collins as Snow White, though; any way we can just swap her with KS?

Posted by: jthomas666 at November 15, 2011 8:13 PM

That was.. awesome?
Terrible?
Awesome?

How do you make this right after a project like the Immortals? Was his latent whimsy too supressed by the sepia-toned restrictions of that film, that it all spilled right-the-fuck out on this one?

Anyway. I can see myself really enjoying this. Just kinda sitting there glazed over with a bit grin on my face, just kind of going with it.

Exact thing that went through my head as well.

Posted by: Paultera at November 15, 2011 8:16 PM

My new crush, Lily Collins.

As for the movie, it is not what I was expecting. I guess if I had to choose I would go with Snow WHite and the Huntsman.

Posted by: junierizzle at November 15, 2011 8:16 PM

I think I'm the only person who wants to see Mirror, Mirror more than Snow White and the Huntsman. I'm an absolute sucker for whimsical things and this certainly fits the bill. And it looks like it knows exactly what it is; a fun spectacle of a kids movie. Reminds me of the 10th Kingdom, which I love.

While Snow White and the Huntsman looks sufficiently dark and intriguing, the fact that Kristen Stewart didn't say one line during the trailer leads me to believe she's going to drag the whole movie down. But since I love twisted fairy tales, I'll probably end up seeing both.

Come on now, The Fall had all kinds of whimsy goin' on. I'm not sure about the story (that trailer was everywhere), but this looks exactly like the kind of fairy-tale story one can expect from Tarsem Singh. I think I'll go see it, even if I'm kinda "meh" about it. Gotta get to Immortals first.

Posted by: Rest In Peace at November 15, 2011 8:28 PM

Umm, wow? No, no, not wow. Ah! Here it is...WTF?

This stinks of a "Three for you, one for us" studio/production company deal. He gets to make 3 beautiful to look at but ultimately unsatisfying movies with limited commercial appeal, he then has to make 1 family friendly fairy tale in an attempt to top up the war chest. If successful, repeat.

Either that, or he's pulling a Robert Rodriguez and he "Just wanted to make something his kids could watch".

Either way, if forced I'd rather sit through Snow White and the Huntsman, if only to avoid Julia Roberts and all the wise crackin', 21st century pop culture referencin' Dwarves.

Posted by: Groundloop at November 15, 2011 8:31 PM

ARMIE HAMMER. I would totally rub your tummy. Ok, so I really just want to listen to you talk.

Also, Beckster? YES. You are my new best friend. Adore T10K. :)

Posted by: Samantha at November 15, 2011 8:43 PM

Lily Collins has the greatest eyebrows since Laura San Giacomo

Posted by: TheOtherGreg at November 15, 2011 8:56 PM

Could they dub Julia Roberts? I think that would help. She may dress the part of a queen, but then she opens her mouth and out comes that voice and it's just pure Julia.

It does look a mite goofy, but I'm in.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at November 15, 2011 9:07 PM

Eh, Snow White and the Huntsman looks better, but I will still see this. Looks fun.

Also, I'm starting a petition: Armie Hammer for Finnick Odair!

Sorry... Hunger Games is still on the brain...

Posted by: lyssie at November 15, 2011 9:58 PM

Switch in Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth and we then know which of the two we need to see.

Posted by: Matt at November 15, 2011 10:01 PM

Yes. Bizarre. Tarsem Singh just may be vying for a place on a future Advanced Genius list. (That wasn't too blatant of a plug, right? I'm not linking to it, after all.)

I concur with swapping Lily Collins for Kristen Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsmen. That movie definitely looks more Tarsem Singhy, while this definitely looks like something a Rupert Sanders would make.

Posted by: RobP at November 15, 2011 10:09 PM

Wow. A Tarsem Singh movie I really want to watch? I never would have believed it. Bring it on.

Posted by: Uriah Creep at November 15, 2011 10:21 PM

I didn't realize Snow White had stolen Leonid Brezhnev's eyebrows. And Nathan Lane actually looks like he belongs in a movie for a change.

Posted by: Protoguy at November 15, 2011 10:28 PM

Julia is so miscast. But I'll take my kids.

Posted by: CurlyGirl at November 15, 2011 10:54 PM

I think this looks pretty exciting! A bit too modernized in the inflections (and the "li'l friend" bit), but honestly, it's easy to hate Julia Roberts, and I'm glad to see her finally playing a character who fits her so well. It also looks to follow a different sensibility from most stuff that's around.

And Lily Collins is just gorgeous.

Posted by: encre at November 15, 2011 11:02 PM

Julia looks/sounds ridiculous and I CANNOT get over the ridiculous that is the caterpillars on that girl's face. I'm sorry. Dude. Please do some landscaping on those brows. She seems like she's got a good charming Snow White demeanor and I am totally distracted by those ridiculous things on her face. Did she want to feel closer to Alice of Wonderland fame? Are her eyebrows going to start smoking a hookah and making up poetry at her about how Julia Roberts is busy playing Julia Roberts with a bad English accent?

Posted by: KatSings at November 15, 2011 11:03 PM

I'm there. It looks fun and bright and I actually think the concept of Julia Roberts who was (no matter how you felt about it) an "It Girl" portraying a woman desperate to hold on to that kind of power and appeal kind of perfect.

Not everything has to be dark and gritty to be good. Especially not when it's meant to be a kids movie for fuck's sake.

Posted by: Intern Rusty at November 15, 2011 11:06 PM

I kind of feel like I'm not watching the same trailer as everyone else in the comments. This looks really terrible, like straight to DVD terrible. Princess Bride is whimsical, this is over the top campy. Roberts was poorly cast, the girl's eyebrows look like they deserve their own zip code, and what's with all these fucking stupid fairy tale remakes/re-imagings this year? Is fairy tales the new super hero movie now? Are we going backwards in time? Superhero movies was our teenage years, fairy tales is our elementary school years...

Next thing you know after they're done with fairy tales, it'll be the Humpty Dumpty movie and the Hickory Tickory Dock movie. Oh man, will that mouse ever come down? Find out in the sequel to Hickory Tickory Dock, The Clock Strikes Back (directed by Brett Ratner).

Posted by: Vi at November 16, 2011 12:20 AM

This looks like something I'd love...if it wasn't for Julia Roberts.

Posted by: Kate at November 16, 2011 12:25 AM

Dickory. It's DICKORY, you DICKORY!

Ahem. Sorry.

There's nothing you can do -- NOTHING! EVER! -- to make me like Teeth Roberts.

Posted by: , at November 16, 2011 1:44 AM

Humpty Dumpty was pretty much covered in Puss In Boots. Now that's a re-imagining that I really liked, against my expectations (and better judgement).

Posted by: Irina at November 16, 2011 5:50 AM

I'm confused. This trailer feels like it should've been a light-hearted take-your-kids Christmas Pixar movie trailer, but somewhere along the way the computers crashed and then actual people were cast and now... this.

I believe, I believe, I believe... I'll need some time to get over that Bollywood intro.

Posted by: Rooks at November 16, 2011 6:06 AM

...Bollywood intro.

That right there. Call me Crankypants but that intro annoyed me.

Posted by: snapnhiss at November 16, 2011 6:12 AM

I'd rather see KS pout her way through this story than watch a movie where every person annoys the hell out of me.

Posted by: FabMax at November 16, 2011 6:41 AM

I guess I'm the only one that thought Julia was funny in this? Of course the last thing I saw her in was Pretty Woman so that might explain...

Posted by: karen at November 16, 2011 6:55 AM

We always comment on how beautiful Lily Collins was in The Blind Side. I certainly buy her as "the fairest of them all."

Posted by: mswas at November 16, 2011 9:21 AM

No and no. No way in the world the monies leave my pocket for THIS. "Say hello to my little friend"? WTF?

Posted by: ChickaBoom! at November 16, 2011 9:42 AM

This looked cute and funny.

However, kids today only get fairytales that are twisted with a bunch of pop culture references. How can they get the joke if they've never even seen or read the original story? The problem here is that there are pop culture references that will date the movie very fast. That's why The Princess Bride still feels so fresh after 20 years. No pop culture references. It exists in it's own universe.

Posted by: BWeaves at November 16, 2011 9:49 AM

What's with these bizarre but giant errors in casting? The other one has a great Queen and a terrible Snow White, this one is the other way around. How about we get Charlize Theron and Lily Colins and forget about Lip Bite and Stupid Laugh? Add in Thor and I'd be happy.

Posted by: figgy at November 16, 2011 11:05 AM

Ok, Lily is 22 but looks like she hasn't reached puberty yet. She looks like a 12 yr. old Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby (where Brooke was paired with Keith Carradine) and 14 year old Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth(where she teamed up with David Bowie). In other words, she caters to the pedophilic minds in us.
Whatever, I'm actually rooting for this version. Asian dwarf for the win.

Posted by: Adrien at November 16, 2011 11:09 AM

I realize it's blasphemy in these parts, but I'd much rather see KStew's version of Snow White than Lily Collins'. Overall, this movie just looks silly. Julia Roberts is painful to watch. Lily Collins has no personality whatsoever.

For the record, I'm no Twi-hard.

Posted by: TheEmpress at November 16, 2011 12:08 PM

I kind of feel like I'm not watching the same trailer as everyone else in the comments. This looks really terrible, like straight to DVD terrible. Princess Bride is whimsical, this is over the top campy.

Agreed. Although I am disappointed that the people who seem to dislike it also dislike her eyebrows. I LOVE HER BROWS.

I wish she and Armie were in Snow White and the Huntsman because other than that, I have to say the darker film looks ten times better than this one. This is just SO over the top; I really wanted to love it and wanted it to be a new Princess Bride or Labyrinth but at around the halfway point it started seeming like a live action Shrek. You know what else it's like? The 10th Kingdom. This looks THAT cheesy. And dudes, I love the 10th Kingdom, but not in non-miniseries non-early 2000s form.

What are you seeing that I'm not seeing?

Posted by: Marcela at November 16, 2011 12:15 PM

SNOW WAY, guys. SNOW WAY. You're ok with that?

Posted by: Marcela at November 16, 2011 12:24 PM

Jennifer Connelly's eyebrows have been reborn on Lily Collin's brow.

Posted by: Bob Frapples at November 16, 2011 12:26 PM

I think we're being way too critical about eyebrows. Not everyone can be Nadine.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at November 16, 2011 1:04 PM

I don't think there is any danger of these movies stepping on each other's toes. The other one wants to be dark and this one is clearly meant for children between the ages of five and eight.

Shit, man, 7-year-old me would have lost his mind over that "Snow way," line.

Unfortunately, grown up me wouldn't go anywhere near this piece of shit. Maybe if I had kids and they payed for my ticket, but that's it.

Posted by: Pfft at November 16, 2011 2:11 PM

WHY do people keep allowing Julia Roberts to do half-in/half-out accents? JUST LET HER TALK NORMAL. It ruins everything. Her accent is completely gone by the end of the trailer. GRUMBLE GRUMBLE.

Posted by: ashley at November 16, 2011 2:52 PM

Is it weird that I have a facebook album from a few years ago (age 23) called "SnoWay" and everyone says that's 7 year-old humor?

Damnit. Young at heart? I still this think looks fun...yay!

Posted by: Issy at November 16, 2011 3:03 PM

Ya know? It looks halfway decent. It at least looks better than Kristen Stewart's pretentious version. This looks like goofy fun!

Posted by: Michele at November 16, 2011 8:00 PM

Thanks I know what version I won't be watching. Julia Roberts is no Charlize Theron.

Posted by: clancys_daddy at November 16, 2011 10:25 PM

No. Not compared to the first one. Not even close based on the trailers.

Posted by: Candy at November 16, 2011 11:49 PM

Mrs Julien, it's true. You can't hate on her too much.

although I already have raised issues with how she wears the damn things IRL, MATCH YOUR TONES WOMAN! MATCH THEM!

Posted by: Nadine at November 17, 2011 6:50 AM

I'm not even joking that when I say with my current hairdo and constant eyebrow styling, IT SHOULDA BEEN ME, except that I can't promise I would NOT have killed Julia.

Posted by: Nadine at November 17, 2011 7:13 AM

I don't know why y'all like this Lily Collins person. She is certainly lovely but her few lines in this film seem to indicate that she is a terrible actress. The scenes that are just her and the dwarves look like a Hallmark channel film.

Armie Hammer, I will totally rub your tummy. I don't mean that sexually either, I jsut think you're adorable.

Posted by: Donut Plains at November 17, 2011 1:41 PM

Definitely going to go see this with my boyfriend when it comes out! Can't wait to see Lily Collins in action!
