Make You A Sword Of Me: The Trailer For Ralph Fiennes' Coriolanus

I am ridiculously excited for this movie. It’s Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut, it stars him, Gerald Butler in “I’m an actual fucking actor” mode, Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Cox, Jessica Chastain, and South African actor John Kani — not to mention a host of European actors (it was filmed in Belgrade).

It puts a modern twist on one of Shakespeare’s more brutal plays, and Fiennes seems to have captured this mix of ideas quite well. The trailer’s a little too action-movie-ish, but still. It looks pretty damn phenomenal.

Also: Goddamn, Ms. Redgrave. The woman is grace, defined and brought to life. Also, I saw an article recently proclaiming Jessica Chastain as “the next Meryl Streep,” which is as ridiculous as naming a 20 year-old basketball player as “the next Michael Jordan.” There will never be another Meryl Streep, because, well, she’s Meryl fucking Streep. But Chastain is making some seriously solid choices and turning in some outstanding performances.

All in all, this looks outstanding.

Damn. Trailer got nabbed. Oh well. I watched that clip that was posted a week or so ago at least three times. I found it that compelling. I think I'm running the risk of becoming that person that won't shut the hell up about this movie to their friends, so much so that they may skip the film merely on principal.

Can't let that happen. So I'll just keep watching random clips on the internet and waiting for some release date (I'm seeing December on a site or two, really?) so I can see this and maybe finally quit babbling on about it.

I am so down for this! And yeah, there will never be another Meryl Streep. In the immortal words of Modern Family, she could play Batman and it'd be amazing.

The trailer had a sponsor?

A commercial for a commercial?

Anyway, yeah, looks good.

Weee-ooh! I love me some Shakespearean movies. I've never read this play, but I'm still incredibly excited by it. That cast! Ralph Fiennes! Redgrave! Rawr!

Good play. Good looking movie. Action oriented, yes. And the "dialog" chewed down to three word snippets to pander to the "masses" who would otherwise be turned off by that Fancy Shakespearian Shit. But if it gets them in the door, then all is good.

I had no idea that Shakespeare also wrote Gladiator and The Last Samurai. Good for him.
