Los Angeles Go Boom!

Battle__Los_Angeles(.jpg

Below is the trailer for Battle Los Angeles, from director Jonathan Liebesman (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), a movie that was originally pitched as something akin to Cloverfield in Los Angeles. As you can see from the trailer, however, it’s more like Cloverfield meets Black Hawk Down meets every Roland Emmerich ever made. It’s just a tremendous amount of destruction and explosions and a couple of shots of Michelle Rodriguez holding a gun. Mostly, though, just destruction. And some sad, plaintive music. It’s gonna be absolutely old-man balls ridiculous.

I’m kind of looking forward to it.

BOOM!

Where's the butthole?!

Well, at least someplace other than New York City and D.C. takes the hit for a change. Not that they're all not deserving.

The fucked this trailer ALL up. About halfway through we see:

"Nothing can prepare you" . . .

. . . which should've been followed by . . .

"FOR THE UNHOLY SHITSTORM!"

"Thunderstruck" by AC/DC

Because I know a shitstorm when I see it, and all that shit fit the bill, Roland. Do it right or go home, my man.

What's that smell? Oh, did somebody make ID4/District 9/Cloverfield stew?

That's good eatin'.

Michelle Rodriguez huh? I wonder if she'll play the "tough as nails but underestimated Latina with an attitude" that she's played in every fucking thing she's ever done. Damn, I hate her.

Oh, and for some reason I was thinking of Escape from L.A. and I was thoroughly confused until I re-read the title.

For some reason that header photo made me think of Beastmaster II, from that glorious era of the 80's when all interdimensional and time portals seem to dump out in The Valley. This is not a bad association, for my love of things Beastmaster is well-documented. In fact, I think this is the fuzziest I've ever felt about a Roland Emmerich project.

Speaking of time travel, and I'm aware this is the wrong thread to bring this up, but you know that new alien film, where they abduct people by the majillions and the bodies of the abducted blot out the sun? Anyway, who's going to save us? ERIC BALFOUR AND DONALD FAISON? Is this 1995? Am I taking crazy pills? Where are Andrew Keegan and Jeremy Sisto when you need them? I just saw Larissa Oleynik on Mad Men, so she's still working, they should have rung her up too.

Kballs, you are a being after my own mind. That trailer would have rocked.

In the Skyline v Battle LA debate, I'm firmly in the Battle LA camp. One looks like Transformers. The other looks like Cloverfield. I'd rather Cloverfield.

For this, you shall be spared.

3.11.11? Why wait?

I'm fairly certain this movie is being released this week. It goes by the name of Skyline. I swear to Christ, if I see another shot of alien motherships floating over the Los Angeles skyline that I'm supposed to be awed by, I'm going home, closing the windows, and turning the gas on.

I dunno. I think those of us who live or have lived in the Los Angeles basin have a soft squishy spot in our hearts for movies that destroy the hell out of the place. And much cheering when places we recognize go up in smoke.

This is the only reason I can come up with to explain my love for the unholy film that is Volcano. Well, that or brain damage.

And, you know, I did have brain surgery earlier this year...

Well, I can save my $12 and just watch "Independence Day" when it shows up again on my local late-night TV!! I mean, what is this crap?? And why couldn't they just wait until 11/11/11? That date is so much cooler!

P.S.: I recognized Michelle R. and Brigette Whats-Her-Name (Tom Brady's baby momma) but are there any real stars (Will Smith-level) in this thing?

yay another war movie pretending to be a sci-fi flick by having the enemy be aliens. oh well, as long as we keep conditioning ourselves to feel threatened by "the other" and feel good about being a militarized culture
