WWE-John-Cena-New-Movie-Legendary-Poster-454x350.jpg

In the genre of sports movies, wrestling is barely represented. And I don’t mean wrestling movies like The Wrestler or Ready to Rumble (Which is inexplicably a guilty pleasure of mine). I mean high school wrestling as seen in movies like Vision Quest. And can I take a quick aside to ask if that’s the only one? I seriously can’t think of anything else and I was on the high school wrestling team.

Anyways- John Cena (Pro Wrestler and star of The Marine) will be starring in what seems to be a legitimate look at real wrasslin’. He’ll be playing the older brother and mentor of actor Devon Graye, best known for his work as Teenage Dexter. Patricia Clarkson will be appearing to ensure that The Boozehound buys a ticket and Danny Glover will be too old for this shit.
Here’s the trailer -

Well, I will say the kid looks appropriately nerdy to be on the wrestling team. Especially as a lower weight class. But, to reveal something about my roots, my parents watch WWE every Monday and Friday and John Cena (from what I’ve seen) is not the guy to teach you how to wrestle. If he’s just weight-training him, then yes. The dude is a tank. But how’s he going to learn how to shoot from a big slow dude like John? That’s key to the lower weight classes!
I might be analyzing this too much. At least there’s a long history of wrestlers becoming successful dramatic actors. You know, like… “Rowdy” Roddy Piper? Don’t tell me he wasn’t great in They Live.

If you’re still reading at this point you probably have some interest in wrestling. So let me ask you- What do you think of this? And also- Am I forgetting some classic High School / College Wrestling movie? A good method actor could really work the “insane weight loss” angle.

I hope that Rowdy Roddy piper comment wasn't sarcastic. I loved that movie and Piper was my first favorite wrestler as a kid.

My high school didn't have wrestling, sadly. But as a former shot put and discus thrower, I'm a sucker for things about strength athletes (though wrestling is as much about speed, agility, and flexibility as it is about strength, especially in the low weight classes, as Adam said). Also, I love stories about people who train their asses off, often harder than football, baseball, and other "glory sport" players, and get hardly any recognition.

I've always had a great deal of respect for wrestlers because they are in one of the most grueling sports there is, and, at least where I'm from, they don't get a whole lot of props for it. Its way more admirable when people train and push themselves for them, and not for praise from others.

So in short, I'm not a huge fan of sports movies or Cena, but just because it's about one of the more "obscure" sports, I'd see it.

With Danial Glover cast as the poor man's Morgan Freeman, apparently.

I have the utmost respect for amature wrestlers. The sport is ridiculously diffcult and hard on the body. Hopefully they do it justice.

I feel the SAME way about amateur porn.

Yes. Because if there's anyone I'm going to cast as an amateur wrestler, it's gotta be someone whose done nothing but bodybuilding.

I don't really know much about wrestling, but I did enjoy John Cena's cameo on Psych. I didn't see any incredible "actor-ing" going on, but he was fun in the cheesy-Psych-kind-of-way.

Strangly the only other 'wrestling' movie I can think of is The world According to Garp. Obiviously its not primarly a wrestling movie but Garp is a wrestling coach as well as a writer and it is a pretty big part of the story.

Some tough wiry motherfuckers on high school/college wrestling teams. Watch some poor 105-pound bastard try to (literally) spit out two pounds of saliva in a steambath to make weight and then wrestle six hard minutes ... it's unlike any other sport, except maybe boxing.

Still, "Vision Quest" is the only one I know of. Notable for (IIRC) the first film appearance by Madonna, a wonderful sequence in which an old man describes Pele scoring an over-the-head goal in soccer, for being at least reasonably intelligent, and for featuring a climactic match in which the scoring made no sense.

We never actually see him in action, but Emilio Estevez ("the Jock") was a wrestler in The Breakfast Club.

HOLYFUCKINGSHIT I actually enjoy wrestling (though I haven't watched in a while because I only really watched for Jeff Hardy and I come and go to the shows as he does and right now he's not there so I'm not watching) but SERIOUSLY right before I clicked on that link I thought that was Channing Tatum in the header picture and it took reading the words 'Wrestling' and and John Cena for me to take a second look and realise it was John Cena and not Channing Tatum.
And I'm a Tatum apologist, one of the ones who waves A Guide To Recognising Your Saints around like a holy fucking bible whenever the question of his acting ability (or lack thereof) is raised.

I clearly need all the coffee
