Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods is Real! There's Even a Trailer and Everything

Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods has been pushed back so many times now that I was beginning to wonder if it was even real, like it was a fever dream conjured up by masochistic studio executives to drive Whedonites into a bloodlust frenzy. But it’s real, and the movie — directed by Drew Goddard, the screenwriter behind Cloverfield — actually looks more Cloverfield than Buffy. I’m not sure what I was expecting: An intimate Evil Dead homage that worked in its own right, I guess. That’s not what this trailer portends: It portends sci-fi shenanigans and a Cloverfield monster out in the woods.

I dunno, folks. In Whedon we trust and all, but when one of Abrams lackeys gets involved, ALL BETS ARE OFF.

Check out the trailer.

Goddard was Whedon's first, no matter how much JJ tried. He'll be Whedon's forever. Im not a big horror person but this looks pretty sweet. Yay Joss

Well, that's certainly not what I was expecting. And now, I'm even more interested in seeing it.

Now this is what I'm talking about! Show 'em how it's done Drew and Joss! I'll be there on opening night!

I'm with you, Phedre. I was interested before, but after that, cannot wait! Opening night for sure.

It's like a reflex. You put the name of Joss on anything and I'll be there anyway but then it always turns out awesome! Ok I'll grant you season one of Dollhouse (apart from Epitaph 1) and the Dushku but then there was Olivia Williams and Whiskey and oh so many new fantastic characters that I ended up even loving that. That just goes to prove that Joss=awesome every damn time. And Drew is cool too.

Spoiler alert: It was GlaDos all the time!

I believe it was Roger Ebert describing The Brotherhood of the Wolf when he said it, but it looks like it works here as well. "An explosion at the genre factory." You've got camping teens, energy walls, yokel/government conspiracies, people in creepy masks, armed guards, monsters, etc. Lord knows what I missed. May have even seen a shrine with a dark ceremony.

I think it'll either be fabulously good or fabulously bad.

I don't know where your comment about a "Cloverfield-style monster in the woods" is coming from. There's a Jason-style slasher and a werewolf shown in this trailer, but there are probably way more creatures being thrown at them. This looks like if Evil Dead met the Truman Show, with a little hi-tech 13th Floor-itude, plus the Buffyesque reversal of Horror tropes. I'm willing to bet Fran Kranz and the girl in the elevator with him have made it to the 3rd act at the point where he fixes the elevator to go down, and that they are the "slut" and the "pothead". Essentially, the sinners are the heroes in a metanarrative commenting on the Christian guilt structure of prior horror films. This was written by Joss, directed by Goddard. No worries there'll be any Abramsing in this, but probably standard directing.

Harborwolf, your comment may be prescient, but maybe that's the point. Maybe it's a meta-reflection on why genre films play out the way they do: Because someone is "directing". This is a look behind the curtain. "We should split up." "Really?"

This isn't my favorite type of movie, but I'm excited to see Fran Kanz again. Topher and Adelle were two of my favorite parts of Dollhouse. Bring on the creepy weirdness!

I didn't know what to expect but it looks like it may have been delayed because it might be a huge mess.

After seeing all the things at play here, I can see why it was delayed. Studios hate to release movies that stray off of the formula path, and for good reason. Originality makes the average filmgoer's head hurt.

I was promised Bradley Whitford. Did I blink at the wrong second and miss him?
