It's Easier For Me To Get Closer To Heaven Than Ever Feel Whole Again: The Darkest Hour Trailer

One science fiction movie that’s been somewhat flying under the radar is Chris Gorak’s The Darkest Hour. It’s about a group of Americans traveling in Moscow, partying it up when — of course — aliens attack. The aliens themselves are what makes the film interesting. Eschewing giant robots and spaceships and scaly monstrosities, the aliens are invisible, energy-based life forms that disintegrate everything in their path. It opens up some new avenues and creates some interesting visual opportunities, effects-wise.

The cast is solid, including Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, and Max Minghella. It’s set for a Christmas release date, and I’m hoping it lives up to its potential. There’s a new trailer out, and while the boom-chicka-boom-chicka techno soundtrack is a little off-putting to some, I actually quite like it. The tone, visuals and atmosphere are all quite impressive. Take a look:

That header image is pretty radass. If that was actually Katherine Heigl, it would be the best image (period) ever. I'm just gonna pretend it's Katherine Heigl, okay?

Looks awful. Though I do like the Ghostbuster rigs they improvise to fight the invisible aliens.

Given that there was an actual person responsible for selecting that music and approving that trailer leads me to believe that the studio doesn't want anyone to see the movie at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure they want us to blow out our hair, don some Ed Hardy and fucking fist-pump our way to the nearest strobe light outlet.

yeah, that was pretty off-putting.

You may like dubstep then.

Disturbing. People disintegrating at the hands of barely- visible energy beings. I need some cat videos, stat.

but will the chick from Transformers use her annoying accent again?

They disintegrated a dog! Have they no souls?! Motherfuckers!
And WTF happened to Max Minghella's face?

How the end always is.

Not with a bang, but with a boom-chika-boom-chika?

Posted by: BiblioGeek at November 23, 2011 1:45 PM

What's wrong with the music? I like it.

Posted by: Adam c at November 23, 2011 2:02 PM

The music screams campy alien invasion hijinks. It would be better suited to something like Mars Attacks! than a serious scifi/horror flick.

While I haven't bothered with the trailer, your description of the music "boom chicka boom chicka" is better suited to porn, while techno exclusively uses "uhn tss uhn tss".

I love the look of this movie, isn't it the guy that did Nightwatch that's making it?

Posted by: Ben at November 23, 2011 7:39 PM

grendel, having just viewed the trailer, I'm gonna have to adjust the knob away from "uhn tss uhn tss" to "bwoooooooyyyyp bwoooooooyyyyp bwoooooooyyyyp bwoooooooyyyyp duhn duhn bwoooooooyyyyp bwoooooooyyyyp bwoooooooyyyyp."

The music makes the trailer. Very cool. I may just stop my unintentional movie-going boycott for this one.

I like a fair share of techno, but I found the track they used in the trailer to be dissonant.
The short featurettes that are listed at the end of the trailer offer a better look at the film, sans the noise.

I have a high quality amplifier for my computer speakers so maybe that's why I like the music so much. I just rewatched it an I'm still loving it.

This movie needed a cinematographer. The visuals are blandly competent, just about par for a Syfy original.
