Is There Such a Thing As Too Much 'Chappie' Footage? Chappie Thinks Not

We saw the second Chappie trailer just last Friday, but that wasn’t enough, was it? Sometimes trailers do give away too much story, but I feel like Neill Blomkamp is pretty good at keeping some good stuff for the actual film. So, even though this is more or less a different cut of what we’ve already seen — with added footage — I trust there’ll still be some theater surprises (We saw what seemed to be a fair amount of District 9 footage in its trailers).

For those who may not have realized, that’s Sharlto Copley inside Chappie; er, you know what I mean. Blomkamp says Copley makes all the difference:

“The [primary] reason it feels real is Sharlto was there. The actor was physically interacting with other actors. There’s no tennis ball situation where they’re acting off of nothing.

We didn’t do traditional motion capture. He was in a gray Lycra suit that gives us lighting information. We would just film it like normal, then give those shots to animators to basically trace animate on top of Sharlto.”
