Believe Me, I Know You Work Insidiously

I’d very much like for this movie to be good. It’s got a pretty good cast — Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson, and Barbara Hershey (fresh off of blowing our minds in Black Swan). It’s directed by James Wan, who directed the only decent Saw movie (the first one), but since hasn’t really hit the mark. And the plot is interesting, if fairly routine: A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.

The trailer, though… is mixed. It’s very effective in some ways, but it’s so hyperactively edited that it detracts away from the overall impact. Would it kill them to have a shot that lasts more than five seconds?

Anyway, take a gander:

(although… the picture in the header is a little Beetlejuice-ishly silly)

I don't know if I can trust Roy Munson's landlord on the subject of hauntings.

Ghost: Raaaawr. (House shakes)

Ghost expert lady: You really jarred something loose there, tiger.

James Wan made Dead Silence. For doing something new and different with the all but dead evil doll subgenre, he gets a lifetime pass from me for any other project. I'm not seeing anything particularly new or interesting in this trailer. Wan does know how to pull out really cool and stylized performances from his actors. It has potential with that cast to be good.

I like the direction that these haunting-style horror movies are taking - that it is a person that is being haunted and not a place. It takes away the objection that intelligent horror fans have (to leave the damn house) and makes the creeps much more effective.

The Further. That's stupid. They wanted something mysterious and shadowy sounding without going too nerdy, and their crack team of crackhead writers came up with "The Further." Go write a Sci-Fi Channel original miniseries and call it a television event.
