I Want to Have This Movie's Babies and Raise them to be Outlaws

If you’re planning on sitting around your Christmas tree, unwrapping things you’ll probably throw away within the year, and eating yourself silly while grandma nods off in her nog on Christmas morning, the Coen Brothers have a much better alternative: True Grit. Here’s the first full-length trailer, which features much more of Jeff Bridges’ Rooster Cogburn, gives us a better idea of Matt Damon’s character (comic relief?), and — in two minutes and 36 seconds — washes away any idea that The Social Network might take home a best picture Oscar.

Johnny Cash, people. Johnny fucking Cash.

I'm all tingly.

OMG.....I need to....change my panties....

I don't think I mentioned this when the teaser trailer was up -

As a person who has ridden a horse outside in winter, let me tell you it is a whole new kind of cold. When I look at the shots and the quality of the light, art direction and cinematography, it perfectly captures that raw edge that steals over you.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at October 4, 2010 1:15 PM

Yaaaay! I haven't been this excited for a movie since the Jackass 3 trailer.

Ahem.

Posted by: Julie at October 4, 2010 1:16 PM

I'll be here in my bear helmet.

Coen Brothers do no wrong!!

Posted by: MissRos at October 4, 2010 1:24 PM

Fuck yeah!
And I second MissRos, the Coen Bros. can do no wrong.

Posted by: Snrub at October 4, 2010 1:40 PM

Yay this movie, yay Johnny Cash on the soundtrack, yay Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Mattie not being played by the most annoying chick ever, yay for this this remake. I've been waiting for this movie since last year.

Does anyone else think that the girl looks like a female version of Shane from Weeds? Meaning, she looks like Shane from Weeds in a dress with pigtails?

Posted by: Katie at October 4, 2010 1:42 PM

washes away any idea that The Social Network might take home a best picture Oscar.

Come now. David Fincher's involvement and the subject matter itself precludes that possibility entirely. I can't wait until the outrage over this and Catfish not taking home their biggest nominations (let alone the likely Catfish snub by the documentary branch). Give it another twenty years and the Academy will be hip to the dip on this whole Internet fad.

I just got goosebumps.

Why, I'm not partial to Westerns but I do believe I can ingest fewer ounces of eggnog in order to make this my Christmas treat.

Posted by: AlwaysSunnyinNJ at October 4, 2010 2:17 PM

Coen Brothers do no wrong!!

I humbly disagree. Their remake of The Ladykillers was a big pile of pants.

But, for the most part, I'd say they generally turn out excellent movies.

I'm going to take this trailer in the shower and use it to slough off all the crappy films from 2010 off until I'm brand new and sqeaky clean. Can. Not. Wait.

Posted by: Lauren at October 4, 2010 3:10 PM

Where's all the "how can they remake this" outrage??????????????????????????????

Oh yeah, no one ever saw the original.

Posted by: junierizzle at October 4, 2010 3:15 PM

Papa Snarker and I will be seeing this on Christmas Day. We have an unofficial tradition of watching Coen brothers movies during the holidays to break up the gloom and generational divide awkwardness. And Jeff Bridges in an eye patch with some Johnny Cash in the background, what can go wrong?

Posted by: Dorothy Snarker at October 4, 2010 3:17 PM

I will so be seeing this first day. Alone, because bless the Ms. Frob, but she does not get the westerns.

I grew up on True Grit and remembered thinking that it was ok. I watched it a few years ago and was SHOCKED at how awful it was. Kim Garby is the worst, she is such a whinny, obnoxious brat, every line out of her mouth is cringe inducing. Wayne is just fat and embarrassing.

You're not going to hear much complaining because the original is over-rated.

Posted by: Mebe at October 4, 2010 3:37 PM

Mayhaps we need a list of movies that should be remade because the original had so much sadly-unfulfilled potential.

I have no suggestions for said list.

I do still want credit for suggesting said list.

You be amazed by how many times today I said list.

Bear riding a horse! Bear riding a horse! Bear riding a horse! Bear riding a horse! Bear riding a horse!

What? Oh.

Man in a bear suit riding a horse! Man in a bear suit riding a horse! Man in a bear suit riding a horse! Man in a bear suit riding a horse! Man in a bear suit riding a horse!

Posted by: myjetski at October 4, 2010 3:55 PM

You be amazed and you be amazed and you be amazed. Everybody be amazed!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at October 4, 2010 3:55 PM

That whole trailer just screams "mustache ride!"

Posted by: admin at October 4, 2010 3:58 PM

Oh fuck yes.

Posted by: Sean at October 4, 2010 4:06 PM

LOL "Bear riding a horse" and "mustache ride". You guys are awesome. :0)

Posted by: Mebe at October 4, 2010 4:08 PM

How much to ride the bear's mustache?

"Yaaaay! I haven't been this excited for a movie since the Jackass 3 trailer.

Ahem.

Don't feel bad. I have laughed my ass off at that trailer. The giant hand makes me laugh every single time I see it. The duck hunting too.

Posted by: Sean at October 4, 2010 4:14 PM

Let's face it, the original True Grit is awesome because John Wayne chews the scenery into pulp and then spits it out all over us. He was a terrible actor, but his one-note swagger worked for True Grit.
But here we have something that looks really promising: a Rooster Cogburn who can actually act. I'm in.

Posted by: PaddyDog at October 4, 2010 4:16 PM

Damn, I'm not partial to Westerns, either, but this looks good, especially the Hailee Steinfeld girl. And, did I just see Spielberg's name attached to this? He better not have freaking tainted it.

Posted by: Katie (KP) at October 4, 2010 4:17 PM

About once a year a movie comes along that I just can not wait to see. Can't wait for Christmas.

Posted by: EricD at October 4, 2010 4:53 PM

This trailer ran before The Social Network two nights ago. It looked like all sorts of awesome in the theater, and it's just as here.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at October 4, 2010 5:02 PM

Sorry, Mrs. Julien - only jM gets to ride. You can totally watch, though.

Posted by: Grizzly S. Bear at October 4, 2010 5:43 PM

I've always liked westerns, I just haven't seen a good one in awhile. I'm looking forward to this one. I love that the girl seems to be such a good actress and she seems to play well off Bridges. Can't wait.

Posted by: mslewis at October 4, 2010 6:13 PM

Who the fuck just badmouthed The Duke? Who? That's just downright blasphemy.

I want to hate this movie. I want to hate this movie. I want to hate this movie.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at October 4, 2010 7:52 PM

I am a big fan of the original, despite Kim Darby. And this trailer is just covered in awesome sauce. Count me in.

Posted by: Ignatz at October 4, 2010 9:37 PM

True Grit's one of my all-time favorite. Wayne is fat and old just like he's supposed to be. He's rude and dirty and kicks ass. Darby is annoying, but that works too.
This does look nearly shot for shot in places. Not quite sold on Jeff's growl but who knows.

Posted by: Protoguy at October 5, 2010 5:56 AM

a) Happy dance.
2) re: Kim Darby, see Ignatz above.
3) Willing to cut Matt Damon some slack until I see the full picture. After all, Rhinestone Cowboy, remember?
4) Finally, a "fourteen-year-old" who LOOKS FOURTEEN.
