I Hope It Lasts (Forever)

Sometimes you watch a trailer and then you watch it again, wanting it to keep going on and last forever. This is one of those trailers. Christopher Plummer, Ewan McGregor, Mélanie Laurent…and a dog. Ewan plays Oliver, whose elderly father, Hal (Plummer) comes out and then tells Oliver he has both a young lover and terminal cancer. Laurent is Anna, just starting a relationship with Oliver. What could be hokey and overdone, instead feels sweet and real and moving. Like Blue Valentine, even though there’s a sense this will be heartbreaking experience, we’re left with a feeling it will be worth it to take a ride with these characters.

Beginners is writer/director Mike Mills’ (Thumbsucker) second feature film and will be in theaters June 3, 2011.

I see what you mean; I've watched it twice already.

I think the trailer benefits from an excellent choice of music and the lack of voice-over man.

"This is what it's supposed to feel like."

Oh god, movie. Do that to me in between two Nor'easters in the coldest, darkest part of the year. Yeah, I can take it.

Great. And I had just finished polishing the hard spiky shell around my heart. Now it looks like a Cadbury creme egg.

That made me all warm and tingly in the space where my heart should be. DAMN YOU, CINDY!

And WHY is nobody commenting on the (possible) fact that Goran Visnjic is the younger lover? That's twelve different kinds of awesome.

(Disclaimer: This is a crossposting from the facespace. It was THAT important.)

I'm just thinking my four girlfriends didn't average out to nearly that long a duration, but I won't hold that against you.

HEART*

*I'm too lazy to look up the tag.

Also, I'm not disappointed that there's a few moments of Kenobi in there.

ah fuck, this IS going to break my heart, isn't it?

I love Ewan McGregor, and I will watch this movie, and I will probably cry. And then I'll love Ewan even more.

I'm aghast that Christopher Plummer's only an Academy Award Nominee.

duckandcover, it is a ghastworthy fact. I do not blame you at all.

God bless Christopher Plummer for completely reinventing his legacy in his 70s and 80s.
Take note Robert DeNiro: THIS is how you have a later life career that people will talk about without snickering long after you're gone .
