I haven’t seen a John Cusack movie since I started following his Tweets. As I’ve mentioned before, I see him in a completely different way now. And it’s not flattering. I want to share that experience with you.

Below is the trailer for Shanghai, a movie that’s been stuck on a shelf for over a year and still doesn’t have a firm release date, though it’s about to be released in China. It’s got a lot of talent: Cusack, Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Franka Potente, David Morse, and Ken Watanabe, and it was directed by Mikael Håfström, who directed what I thought was a pretty phenomenal horror movie, 1408. So, what’s wrong with the movie? It looks, from the trailer, like there’s a lot of credible performances, but it’s not exactly compelling, either.

Anyway, before you watch the trailer, I want to offer you a sampling of recent tweets by John Cusack, and let’s see how that colors your perception of his performance in the trailer.

  • beber rides the jaxkalope as he sings the song of the hyenia— and they circling lyss at night —whispering horrible shit.

  • I CAN ONLY AWNSER WHAT WOULD SHOCKOZULU DO… TO DIRECT QUESTIONS

  • bp — obama- wallstreet- obama—untill he learns he will be hated by corporate forces no matter what he does- he will cont- to get rolled … and we all continue to suffer…same for the juggernught war machine—-it’s only purpose is to use him till hes done then use the next

  • would love if all flag sucking halfwits who saw lloyd dobbler as a-political would unfollow— they didnt pay attention to film anyway

    RICK-rolled?

P.S. I have zero interest in seeing this movie, despite the presence of Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li, Ken Watanabe, and David Morse.

  • I don't know how you could fuck up a movie with that cast, but it looks like they may have managed. But, Gong Li! My god, Gon Li!

Stupid Twitter takes all the glamour out of Hollywood. I used to think John Cusack was adorable and not completely stoned all the time. Imagine if, say, Humphrey Bogart tweeted. It would just suck. I miss the illusion.

    Good to know!

Boring! Boring! And I don't even understand what the hell Cusack is twittering about. But he seems like a twat knuckle.

Yeah, __Tallconnect.com__ has a better command of the language than Cusack.

Cusack is so boringly rote in his wannabe-edgy liberalness. You could buy him at Hot Topic if Hot Topic sold liberal.

All I can say to those Tweets is "Um, what?"

Oh man, well... there go five years of being in love with John Cusack. He must have been an awesome actor after all, what with his being such a douchebag. This depresses me.

Posted by: Marcela at May 27, 2010 12:41 PM

Don't mean to sound bad, but you guys and gals are aware that actors that you see on the screen are doing a make believe right? Right?

So Cusack is an inarticulate and borderline illiterate buffoon. Adam Baldwin is an ultra right wing conservative. Ashton Kutcher is...well actually he's pretty much Ashton Kutcher come to think of it.

Anyway, the point is, that's not what you pay them for people. Every time this comes up I'm reminded of the scene when Salieri sees Mozart being a fucking idiot in Amadeus and thinks, what the hell is this? THIS is the font of beauty and passion in music that I have been hearing?

Rather than being disappointed, be amazed. It has to be hallmark of a decent actor to make you believe something that isn't true. There is no betrayal here, because it was never true to begin with folks.

    Never liked him anyway.

frobme: If they put their ignorance out there for any and all to read, you can't really blame people for expressing their disappointment towards an actor they might otherwise like. And the internet is jam-packed with sites that are gonna re-post every damn word they write- we're on one of them right now.

When they can find a way to filter out bullshit nonsense, then we may not have it thrust in our face every time we dare to click a mouse.

I just felt my brain shudder in my head as a warning to never, ever read that man's Tweets again. It's only done this once, and that was the first time I saw a picture of Pennywise.

John Cusack's Tweets hurt my soul as bad as freakin' Pennywise the Clown.

I responded to that Lloyd Dobler comment. No response, though. I'm still waiting for my big celeb Twitter acknowledgment. It's like the new lottery.

ADAM BALDWIN? Oh frobme, say it ain't so.

I liked him, therefore I assumed he was exactly the same as me!

Our public education system has failed Mr. Cusack.

Jeffery Dean Morgan dies at the beginning of a movie/show again! Talk about being type cast.
