Hollywood's Still Trying To Make Danny Trejo Happen: Bad Ass Trailer

Danny-Trejo-in-Bad-Ass-2011-Movie-Image.jpg

This is one of those that almost looks like it’s a fake, Funny Or Die, kind of thing. It’s the trailer for Bad Ass, about an accidental urban vigilante. The main character, played by Danny Trejo, is inadvertantly captured on Youtube administering a beat to some punks on a bus, and soon becomes an elderly, bearded ass kicker out for vengeance.

I’d love for it to be good, because I do so enjoy Danny Trejo, but the truth is, the man isn’t, and shouldn’t be, a lead actor. He’s fun and scary and intimidating as fuck, but he’s really not meant to carry an entire film. They tried it with Machete, which whose marketing campaign was far more interesting than the movie itself. Yet this is shooting for the same kind of grindhouse appeal that films like Machete and Hobo With A Shotgun tried for, and ultimately will likely miss just as widely as those did.

But it’s a fun trailer, filled with a surprising number of impressive cameos. Take a look:

Of course, it’s hard not to make comparisons to this now-infamous (and very unpleasant, not to mention NSFW) video:

Meh. A whole movie out of 'amberlamps'? Pass. But please don't tell Danny Trejo!

From the header pic, it looks like he was cast to play the axe-murdering version of Paul Bunyan, sadly we already know that isn't the case.

Notice on the original footage, the man's being harrassed by one young back man, but this being Hollywood, they changed it into

...two white skinheads. Then again, they changed the old man from white to latino, so who knows? I suppose you could argue that the replacements are bigger and meaner, but the races involved ultimately doesn't matter. They all could have been the same race, I would have thought age (and the gap between the combatants) was a more relevant reason the original footage went viral. I'm not certain if race was ever an issue in the real-life fight, but the trailer footage suggests they made it one. I wonder if there wasn't motivation to change the antagonist into multiple targets and into someone who was a little less redeemable regardless.

So, does anyone know what the hell started that argument? The video just picks up with them already arguing, and something about spit-shining shoes.

And of course this has Ron Perlman in it, so I'm contractually obligated to see it at some point (it's in my charter.) At least it's not Dungeon Siege or Season of the Witch.

How can I like this person but hate everything he's done?

You are a Danny-boy's long lost parent?

Nobody needs to make Danny Trejo "happen". He just is, as a force of nature.

He has a lifetime pass of awesome, laminated with glitter. Cash redemption value, 1/20 cent.

MM,

I'm completely with ya on that. Frankly I think Trejo's already "happened".

Take that, Hollyweird!

I have a feeling that Trejo has "happened," much like Cuba Gooding Jr. "happened" to redbox. I base this in no small part on his role in the awful Spy Kids 4 movie (no amount of Joel McHale could save that film.)

By "unpleasant", were you referring to the purple leggings?

Has this movie not already been made twice, and they were called "Gran Torino" and "Harry Brown"?

"This is one of those that almost looks like it’s a fake, Funny Or Die, kind of thing."

You mean like every frame of Machete?

I wonder if it's important to note that the guy in the video beat up that dude because he's a racist nutbag? No? Rock on with your stupid self then.

Yes, Bluejayone, the viral video was based on racism, the big crazy white guy with the Ahab told the black guy to shine his shoes and then when the black guy called him racist he's said "It doesn't matter. It could be a Chinaman!" One more reason I love Tosh.0

Posted by: Protoguy at December 28, 2011 1:21 AM

As others have noted we don't hear the start of the conversation in the second video. It picks up with the white guy asking how much the black guy charges to shine shoes. He mentions the type of shoes he has and that he has a wedding coming up. The black guy is offended and asks him why he should shine his shoes. The white guy says 'because you offerred'. It is clear to me that he misunderstood what the black guy had said earlier at the front of the bus. The black guy is angry (understandably) and tells the white guy to move away, which he does. The white guy moves to the front of the bus and the black guy, still agitated (because the pair are still going at each other verbally) follows him to the front of the bus. The white guy is sitting down, the black guy stands over him and threatens to put a foot up his ass, and then fisticuffs ensue. I can't see who threw first (the white guy claims it was the black guy) but it is the black guy who comes of worst.

It's not racism, it's just two males getting all testosteroned and not listening to each other. Or to put it another way:

Younger dude got owned by the older dude.
